2 hours 30 minutes

22 MAY 2019 (p.m.)

GENERAL INFORMATION

1. This paper consists of SIX questions. Answer ALL questions.

2. Silent, non-programmable calculators may be used for this examination.

3. For this examination, each candidate should have the following:

Two sheets of drawing paper (Both sides may be used.)
Drawing board and T-square
Drawing instruments

INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES

1. All dimensions given are in millimetres unless otherwise stated.

2. Where scales are not stated, the full size should be applied.

3. All geometrical construction lines MUST be visible on all drawings.

4. When first-angle or third-angle is not specified, the choice of projection is left to the
candidate’s discretion, in which case the type of projection used MUST be clearly stated.

5. The candidate should use his/her own judgement to supply any dimensions or other
details not directly shown on the drawings.

6. The number of each question MUST be written next to the solution.

7. Each candidate MUST enter his/her school code and registration number in the appropriate
space provided at the bottom of the drawing paper.

SECTION A

MODULE 1 — STRUCTURAL DRAWINGS

Answer ALL questions from this section.

1. Figure 1 shows a simply supported beam loaded with two point loads (PLs) and a uniformly
distributed load (UDL).

Figure 1. Simply supported beam

(a) Calculate the magnitude of the reactions. [4 marks]

(b) Produce the shear force diagram (SFD) for the beam, using a graphical method.
[10 marks]

(c) Identify the point where the shear force SF = 0 and calculate the maximum bending moment
(BMmax) corresponding to this point. [6 marks]

(a) Produce a reinforcement detail plan of the concrete roof slab for the building in Figure
2 at a scale of 1:20. Use a slab thickness of 150 mm and show the main distribution and
‘over support’ bars along with the bar sizes, type and spacing specifications.
[12 marks]

(b) Produce a section through the slab drawn at a scale of 1:20, showing all details.

SECTION B

MODULE 2 — BUILDING MATERIALS AND PROCESSESS

Answer ALL questions from this section.

3. (a) Name TWO types of Portland cement and, for EACH type named, clearly explain the
situation in which it is suitable for use. [6 marks]

(b) With the aid of a flow chart, explain ONE of the following processes for producing cement:

(i) The wet process

(ii) The dry process [6 marks]

(c) Table 1 below gives the specifications for the coarse aggregates and fine aggregates to be
used in a mix.

TABLE 1. COARSE AND FINE AGGREGATE SPECIFICATIONS

Coarse Aggregates Fine Aggregates

Moisture content 1% Moisture content 5.5%
Water absorption rate 0.5% Water absorption rate 0.8%
Specific gravity 2.7 Specific gravity 2.6

The coarse aggregates are rounded and the mix is of medium workability with an
aggregate cement ratio of 3:8 and a proportion of fine:coarse aggregate of 2:1. Type 1
Portland cement with a specific gravity of 3.15 is to be used. Use the information provided
to design a mix for a total damp aggregate weight of 30 kg and a water cement ratio of
0.4. [8 marks]

4. You are the newly appointed site manager for a construction company. Your company is undecided
as to which quarry to choose for the supply of aggregates.

(a) Explain the process of sampling aggregates. [4 marks]

(b) What are the TWO main factors that must be taken into consideration when sampling and
testing aggregates? [2 marks]

(c) Explain the impact that particle shape, surface texture, size and texture classification have
on concrete mix. [6 marks]

(d) Using diagrams where necessary, explain the winning and processing of aggregates.

SECTION C

MODULE 3 — MANAGEMENT AND DESIGN

Answer ALL questions from this section.

5. The network shown in Figure 3 represents a section of a project being undertaken by a sub-
contractor. The number of equipment (mixers) required for each activity is also shown in
Figure 3; for example, 2E = 2 equipment. The subcontractor does not want to use more than eight
mixers on the job. However, the main contractor would like the job to be completed in 27 weeks
to phase in his operations.
