“Outdoor Activity and Its Relation to Academic Performance”

Introduction

The relationship between outdoor activities and academic performance has

been a topic of interest among researchers, educators, and parents. The purpose of this

research paper is to explore the relationship between outdoor activities and academic

performance. The paper will review the literature on the benefits of outdoor activities

for academic performance, as well as the factors that affect the relationship between

outdoor activities and academic performance. The paper will conclude with

recommendations for educators, parents, and policymakers on how to promote

outdoor activities to improve academic performance.

Benefits of Outdoor Activities for Academic Performance:

Outdoor activities have been found to have numerous benefits for academic

performance. Research has shown that outdoor activities can improve memory,

attention, and creativity (Berman et al., 2012; Faber Taylor et al., 2001; van den Berg

et al., 2010). Outdoor activities have also been found to reduce stress and anxiety,

which can improve academic performance (Bratman et al., 2015; Soga et al., 2017). In

addition, outdoor activities have been found to increase physical activity levels, which

can improve overall health and academic performance (Mullender-Wijnsma et al.,

2016; Sallis et al., 2012).


Factors Affecting the Relationship between Outdoor Activities and Academic

Performance:

While the benefits of outdoor activities for academic performance are well-

documented, several factors can affect the relationship between outdoor activities and

academic performance. One factor is the type of outdoor activity. Research has shown

that certain outdoor activities, such as hiking and camping, have greater benefits for

academic performance than other activities, such as team sports (Mullender-Wijnsma

et al., 2016). Another factor is the duration of the outdoor activity. Research has

shown that longer durations of outdoor activities have greater benefits for academic

performance (van den Berg et al., 2010). The time of day when outdoor activities

occur is also a factor. Research has shown that outdoor activities in the morning have

greater benefits for academic performance than outdoor activities in the afternoon

(van den Berg et al., 2010).

Recommendations for Educators, Parents, and Policymakers:

Based on the literature review, several recommendations can be made for

educators, parents, and policymakers. Educators can incorporate outdoor activities

into their curriculum, such as nature walks and outdoor learning experiences, to

improve academic performance. Parents can encourage their children to participate in

outdoor activities, such as hiking and camping, to improve academic performance.

Policymakers can support outdoor education programs in schools and allocate

resources to create outdoor recreation opportunities in communities.


Conclusion:

In conclusion, outdoor activities have numerous benefits for academic

performance. The literature review suggests that certain outdoor activities, such as

hiking and camping, have greater benefits for academic performance than other

activities. The duration and time of day when outdoor activities occur are also factors

that affect the relationship between outdoor activities and academic performance.

Educators, parents, and policymakers can promote outdoor activities to improve

academic performance by incorporating outdoor activities into curriculum,

encouraging children to participate in outdoor activities, and supporting outdoor

education programs in schools and communities.
