• Artistic Painting were introduced to the Filipinos in the 16th century
by the Spaniards as means to spread Catholicism throughout the
Philippines.
• In the early 19th century, wealthier and educated Filipinos introduced
more secular Filipino arts which the usual subjects are: landscapes,
Filipino inhabitants, Philippine Fashion, and government officials.

Philippine Art Academy – the first art school in the
Philippines established by Damian Domingo in 1820.

Damián Domingo y Gabor (February 12, 1796 –


July 26, 1834)
Chinese Filipino painter who was the first Filipino
painter to paint his self-portrait. Domingo over saw
the development of art and established an art school
which became the first official art academy in the
Philippines.
When Domingo died in 1834, the school was unable
to maintain the standards Domingo had set and closed
in 1834

Juan Luna y Novicio (October 24, 1857 –

a Filipino painter, sculptor and a political activist


of the Philippine Revolution during the late 19th
century.

His notable artwork “Spoliarium” won the gold


medal in the 1884 Madrid Exposition of Fine
Arts.
