Question 01
(a) List three items made from ceramics. For each item, note the specific ceramic used and at least
one characteristic that makes it the material of choice.
(c) List four different types of polymers with their specific characteristics and one application.
Question 02
(b) List the three types of Primary bonds and briefly explain one of them.
(c) Briefly discuss the relationship between type of bonds and properties of engineering materials.
(d) What are the different types of microscopes used for metallurgical observations and state the
things that you can observe under a microscope.
Question 03
(b)Determine the carburizing time (in s) necessary to achieve a carbon concentration of 0.44 wt%
at a position 1.9 mm into an iron-carbon alloy that initially contains 0.031 wt% C. The surface
concentration is to be maintained at 1.2 wt% C, and the treatment is to be conducted at 1020°C.
Assume that D0 = 5.1 x 10-5 m2/s and Qd =154 kJ/mol.

Question 04
(a)A hypothetical metal has an orthorhombic unit cell for which the a, b, and c lattice
parameters are 0.413 nm, 0.665 nm, and 0.876 nm, respectively. If there are 8 atoms per unit
cell and the atomic packing factor is 0.536, determine the atomic radius (in nm).
(b)Draw the following crystallographic planes and the directions in a cubic unit cell.
(c)Consider a 0.05 mm thick, 500 mm2 piece of Aluminium foil. How many unit cells exist in the
foil? If the density of Aluminium is 2.7 g/cm3, what is the mass of each cell? Lattice constant
‘a’ for Aluminium is 0.405nm.
(d)Identify the miller indices of the planes A & Bin Fig. (i) and the directions A,B,C,D in Fig. (ii)
shown below.
(e)Tungsten has a Body Centered Cubic (BCC) structure and an atomic radius of 0.137nm.
Calculate the planer density of Tungsten in the (111) plane.
