Stay Gold Stevie Ending The theme of this song is Wonder ``staying gold.`` Ponyboy doesn't understand the poem that Johnny told him.``stay gold`` are the last words Johnny said before his death. Later, in their copy of ``Gone with the Wind.`` Stay Gold`` means hold on to the wondrous things you see and experience while you are young. Hold on the wonder, the `Goldness` of youth. This happened on pg. 178 the letter Johnny wrote to Ponyboy.
