JENNIFER GOLD

Jennifer Gold is my aunt and she is an admirable woman. She left school at eighteen
before she went to college and then worked at a local airport. After a year, she went to work
for Flyme and then she joined Emirates Airlines as a flight attendant. Five years later, she got
her present job as an airport manager.

Here is what she told me about her job:

“My office is at Pokolu Airport in Melbourne, but I spend most of my time in the air.
I give trainings to flight attendants. I work from 8 in the morning until 4 in the evening, but
sometimes I work from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Basically, I work for eight hours. At work, the first
thing I do is check flight times on my computer, and then I speak with crews.

The thing that I love about being an airport manager is travelling. I enjoy exploring
new places. I would go on long flights to check how the flight attendants are doing.
Travelling can be tiring. When I get back from a long journey, all I can do is eat and then go
to bed! I earn a good salary, and I love working for Emirates Airlines.

Despite my love for travelling, I know I will need to retire someday. So, I have started
compiling materials for my book. I hope one day I will get to publish my travelling journal
and share it with the world.”

Read the text below and answer questions 25 to 34.

Justin was driving his car along a country road with his friend Danny in the passenger seat.
Danny's arm was in a sling as he had broken it a few weeks ago. They were on their way to
get some groceries at a nearby shop.

The pleasant drive suddenly turned into a nightmare when a car with three men in it moved
past them. The man in the back seat pointed a gun at Justin and asked him to stop.
Horrified, Justin had no choice but to follow the order. He stopped by the roadside. The
two friends were terrified, wondering what it was all about.

The three men in the car got out quickly. All of them had guns which they pointed at the
two friends. One of them shouted angrily at the two boys to get out of the car with their
hands up. Again, they had no choice but to obey. Danny, of course, could only raise one
hand, the other being in a sling.

One of the men took out a badge and identified himself as a police officer named Mr.
Eddie. Then, he asked his men to inspect Danny and Justin. Satisfied that they were
defenseless, he requested to see the friends' identity cards. Danny and Justin anxiously
handed theirs over to the police officers.

"Sorry, we apologise for the inconvenience. We thought that you were someone else. We
are looking for a desperate criminal with a broken arm and we had to check you out," Mr.
Eddie explained. With that, they left the two friends.

It took a few minutes before Danny and Justin calmed down. It was just a case of mistaken
identity, but it was a really chilling one.

Questions 35 – 40
You are going to read a story on a butterfly.
Six sentences have been removed from the article. Choose from the sentences (A - H) to fit
each gap (35 - 40). There are two extra sentences which you do not need to use.
For each question, mark the correct answer (A – H) on your answer sheet.

THE BUTTERFLY

One fine day, a man was walking past a tree when he suddenly noticed a cocoon of a

butterfly hanging from a tree branch. It attracted him as he saw a small opening on the

cocoon.
35

The butterfly struggled to force its body through that little hole until it suddenly

stopped making any progress.

3 The man then decided to take action to help the butterfly.

3 The insect appeared easily, although its shape was unusual. 3

The man didn’t think anything of it and sat there waiting for the wings to enlarge to

support the butterfly. 3 The man then realised something was wrong with the

butterfly as soon as it got out of the cocoon, but everything was too late now. 4

Despite the kind heart of the man, he didn’t understand that the restricting cocoon

and the struggle needed by the butterfly to get itself through the small opening were

necessary. These were God’s ways of forcing fluid from the body of the butterfly into its

wings to prepare itself for flying once it was out of the cocoon.
