QUESTIONS
1. In an examination, the probability that a student will pass Accounting is 0.75. If the (13 marks)
student passes Accounting, the probability that the student will pass Economy is 0.8. If
the student fails Accounting, the probability that the student will fails Economy is 0.3.
(a) Calculate the probability that the student will pass
i. Economy.
ii. Accounting given that the student passes Economy.
(b) Find the probability that the student fails for both subjects, Accounting and
Economy.
(c) Find the percentage that the student fails Accounting in this examination.
(d) State whether the events of a student who passes Accounting and Economy are
independent. Give reasons for your answer.
2. Nusantara Research, Inc., a consumer research organization, conducts surveys designed (7 marks)
to evaluate a wide variety of products and services available to consumers. In one
particular study, Nusantara looked at consumer satisfaction with the performance of
automobiles produced by a major Detroit manufacturer. A questionnaire sent to owners
of one of the manufacturer’s full-sized cars revealed several complaints about early
transmission problems. To learn more about the transmission failures, Nusantara used
a sample of actual transmission repairs provided by a transmission repair firm in the
Detroit area. The following data show the actual number of miles driven for 50 vehicles
at the time of transmission failure.
4. Drinkho Ltd., a drink manufacturer, has recently been prosecuted for selling an (20 marks)
underweight 150g jar of drink. You have been asked to assist the quality control
manager who is investigating the problem.
Jars are filled automatically and the filling machine can be preset to any desired
weight. For the 150g jars of drink, a weight of 151g is set. There is no subsequent
checking of the weight of individual jars, although samples are occasionally taken to
check for quality. The standard deviation will depend to a certain extent on the mean
weight, but for weights between 140g and 160g, it is virtually constant at 1.5g.
You have been asked to apply your knowledge of normal distribution to the problem.
In particular, you have been told that prosecution only occurs when the product is
underweight by more than 2%, so you need to find the probability that such a weight
could happen by chance.
(a) Assuming that the mean weight is 151g, what proportion of jars are:
(i) Under 150g in weight?
(ii) Under 148g in weight?
(iii) Under 147g in weight?
(iv) Over 150g?
(b) What should the mean weight be set to so that the probability of a jar weighing
less than 148g is less than 0.1%?
(c) Write a short note to the Quality Control Manager summarising your results.
