Title of series THE SOCIAL NETWORK (2010)

Synopsis of the movie “The Social Network” is about a young man who possessed
an uncanny ability to look into a system of unlimited
possibilities and sense a winning move. His name is Mark
Zuckerburg, he created Facebook and became a billionaire
in his early 20’s. David Fincher is the director of the film. His
film has the rare quality of being not only as smart as its
brilliant hero, but in the same way it is cocksure, impatient,
cold and exciting. With an intriguing concept, for me one of
the defining films I have seen recently, one of the best movies
in 2010 and relevant in its themes of greed, betrayal, class
tension, friendship and loyalty and concept.

Synopsis of the video excerpt

Critical Incident 1

Synopsis of Incident 1 Mark who is the leader of the organization but did not
have the knowledge of his own business and relied on
hope and handed all trust to Sean can be considered as
very unreasonable.

Description of Critical Incident Lack of leaderships

Mark passes his responsibility to another person

whereas he should be the one to lead the organization.
This will endanger his business if Sean acted as he
pleased and had other bad intentions than he should do.

Analysis of Incident Mark shows that he lacks of leadership because has no

knowledge or experiences about this business, only
relies on the opinion of an outsider who is an expert in
this field, Sean Parker.

Application Theory Novitasari et al. (2021) contends that all leaders must
have an adequate amount of knowledge to ensure that
it can enhance the effectiveness of an organization.

Effect This is one of the main reasons why Mark’s own best
friend Eduardo Saverin, who is also involved in the
business, does not support Mark’s action. Mark
Zuckerberg's lack of leadership will be a problem
towards his business organization.

Recommendation
It is important to have a good leadership skills in the
organizations and workplace in order to minimize the
issue, the leader or employees need to learn the skills
and gain experiences.
CRITICAL INCIDENT 2

Synopsis of Incident 2 Mark is not satisfied with the actions of his ex-girlfriend
who left him, this leads to unethical behavioral
components where he has acted to create
facemash.com which is a website to rank girls based
on their hotness by hacking into student computers
and their online directory.

Description of Critical Incident Unethical behaviour

Mark Zuckerberg creates facemash.com which is a

website to rank girls based on their hotness by hacking
into student computers and their online directory.

Analysis of Incident Mark’s actions are too emotional. Mark acted in such a
way out of revenge for his ex-girlfriend. This is
considered an inappropriate insult as it has
embarrassed the name of his university and those who
spread his picture because of Mark’s actions.

Application of Theory Emotions can influence our decision making

sometimes in a harmful way because the decisions are
from a rash action (Lerner et al., 2015). A rash action
can affect an organization in a bad way because it is
out of a personal interest rather than the organization’s
interest.

Effect This action by Mark Zuckerberg can be considered as

an inappropriate insult as it has embarrassed the
name of his university. It is a problem for an
organization when someone makes any kind of
decision making using his or her emotions alone as it
will not benefit the organization as a whole.
Recommendation To avoid the unethical work ethics, Mark should know
how to control his emotions and avoid having negative
attitudes that lead to the downfall of the organization
as a result of being too in line with one's own feelings.
CRITICAL INCIDENT 3

Synopsis of Incident 3 Mark never give up and keep going to make Facebook
become more famous until it expand to the other
schools in the Northeastern United States.

Description of Critical Incident Persistency

While there was more than one individual involved in

the earliest stages of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg was
the only one who stuck until the end and make the
Facebook become more expand and well known.

Analysis of Incident Zuckerberg brilliantly targeted his platform at college

students, specifically to those who attended Harvard in
the initial stages of the launch, painting it an exclusive
and prestigious illusion. This further boosted the
platform’s desirability, and as it expanded
internationally, people were quick to join, resulting in
an upsurge in its popularity.

Application of Theory Persistence is the quality of continuing steadily despite

problems or difficulties. It is one of the qualities of high
achievers. The longer you stay committed to a task or
goal, the more likely something good will happen for
you. (Micele, B. 2022)

Effect We can safely see that Mark incredible devotion

combined with restless persistence were key
ingredients in his massive success. Facebook now
owns multiple huge companies, such as Instagram and
WhatsApp.

Recommendation We should have to be persistent and work tirelessly on

your dreams if you want them to come true.
CRITICAL INCIDENT 4

Synopsis of Incident 4 Bravery

Description of Critical Incident

The Winklevoss's had the idea of Facebook and

were not brave to make it real. Then, Mark came
to make the dream real.

Analysis of Incident
Mark loves to innovates and challenges himself.
He is always pushing to envelope and didn't
worry if he ever going to fail.

Application of Theory

Bravery is the quality that allows someone to

pursue valuable goals despite risks (Lester &
Pury, 2011)

Effect
Brave leaders are able to create a culture of trust
and respect, which makes those around them be
prepared to follow them

Recommendation
Embrace the risks and discomfort in order to
achieve the goals as being a brave leader is not
an easy pask.
CRITICAL INCIDENT 5

Synopsis of Incident 5
Lack of communication

Description of Critical Incident Due to Mark Zuckerberg failed to inform and interact
with the Winklevoss twins about the creation of
Facebook, they then got into an argument. When Mark
didn't tell anyone about his plan to start and grow
Facebook, he was accused of stealing the idea from
the twins.

Analysis of Incident
Mark Zuckerberg displays the poor communications
skills as he didn't communicate with his business
partner about his idea and intention to grow the
Facebook.

Application of Theory
Strategic communication is a topic of study that aims
to better understand how organisations utilise
communication to accomplish their goals (Ruler, 2018)

Effect According to Ahmed Adam Isa, poor communication

can lead to conflict between peoples in the workplace
As a result, communication styles may vary or
communication may fail.

Recommendation According to Ahmed Adam Isa, poor communication

can lead to conflict between peoples in the workplace
As a result, communication styles may vary or
communication may fail.
CRITICAL INCIDENT 6

Synopsis of Incident 6

Relationship conflict

Description of Critical Incident Eduardo Saverin, who is portrayed by Andrew Garfield

and serves as Mark's business partner, put his trust in
Mark, but Mark breaches that trust. When Saverin
asserts that his Facebook shares were unfairly
liquated when the 4 companies were created, Mark
and Saverin became estranged from one another.
When reaching his decision on his own without
Eduardo's approval, Mark did not either communicate
with him any form.

Analysis of Incident
Mark is being selfish, greedy and unfaithful towards his
partner that leads into the conflict between the two of
them.

Application of Theory

Relationship conflict is a quarrel that happens at work

due to personalities that are different and that can lead
to tense, emotional interactions among co-workers.

Effect

Intense conflicts over a prolonged period affects

individual's emotionally and physically, and give rise to
psychosomatic disorders (Qmisore & Abiodun, 2014).
Recommendation

Minimize relationship conflict by problem solving,

forcing, avoiding, yielding and compromising
Title of series THE SOCIAL NETWORK (2010)

Conclusion In this movie it gave a variety of details that

can be used to fully understand
professional and unprofessional behaviours
that occur at workplace. It emphasises the
importance of having a strong work ethic,
positive body language, and a good attitude
in the workplace. Therefore, we should
become more humble rather being over-
confidence because it can make harder for
us in the future.
