ARTS DAY 2: ELEMENTS AND PRINCIPLES OF ARTS

Goals/Objectives: At the end of the lesson, you will be able to analyse elements and principles of art in the production of arts and
crafts inspired by the cultures of Southeast Asia.

ELEMENTS OF ART
Line - A point moving in space
Shape - A combination of lines
-Can be two-dimensional, flat, or limited to height and width
Form - A combination of lines and shapes
-May also be free flowing
-3 dimensional
Value - Lightness and darkness of tones of colors
Space - Positive and negative areas are defined and shows a sense of depth.
Color - Color is an element consisting of hues, of which there are three properties: hue, chroma or intensity, and value. Color
is present when light strikes an object and it is reflected back into the eye, a reaction to a hue arising in the optic nerve.
 Hue – name of color
 Intensity – Quality of brightness and purity.
a. High intensity (Color is strong and bright)
b. Low intensity (Color is faint and dull)
Texture - Refer to the way things feel, or look as if they might feel if touched.

PRINCIPLES OF ART
The means an artist uses to organize elements within a work of art.

Rhythm - A principle of design that indicates movement, created by the careful placement of repeated elements in a work of art to
cause a visual tempo or beat.
Balance - A way of combining elements to add a feeling of equilibrium or stability to a work of art. Major types are symmetrical and
asymmetrical.
Emphasis (contrast) - A way of combining elements to stress the differences between those elements.
Proportion - A principle of design that refers to the relationship of certain elements to the whole and to each other.
Gradation - A way of combining elements by using a series of gradual changes in those elements. (large shapes to small shapes,
dark hue to light hue, etc)
Harmony - A way of combining similar elements in an artwork to accent their similarities (achieved through use of repetitions and
subtle gradual changes)
Variety - A principle of design concerned with diversity or contrast. Variety is achieved by using different shapes, sizes, and/or
colors in a work of art.

Draw an image for the following statement.

. Be creative and make sure to use the elements and principles of arts. (divide the back portion into two and draw there your work)

1. A Starry Night (Principles of art)

2. A Summer’s Day (Elements of art)

HEALTH DAY 4: HUMAN SEXUALITY

Goals/Objectives: At the end of the lesson, you will be able to identify the terms about human sexuality and its dimensions.

Human Sexuality – Human sexuality may be defined as the measure of maleness and femaleness in one’s individuality and physical
make-up.

WORDS ASSOCIATED WITH SEXUALITY: SEX AND GENDER

SEX – refers to the biological and physiological characteristics.

GENDER – refers to the behaviour and attitude that is influenced by the society. Gender may be classified as masculine or feminine.

(We will discuss this deeper on the latter part)

WHY IS SEXUALITY AN IMPORTANT COMPONENT OF ONE’S PERSONALITY?

 It helps a person to determine or define who he/she is

 It allows one to easily list down his/her choices and plan what he/she wants to be in the future
 It is a big factor that influences a person in making his/her decisions in life.

THREE DIMENSIONS OF SEXUALITY

1. BIOLOGICAL DIMENSION

This dimension is described by the persons biological and physical sexual characteristics as controlled by sex chromosomes
and hormones produced by the sexual gland.

SEX CHROMOSOMES
- The chromosomes carry the genetic material DNA (Deoxyribonucleic Acid)
- DNA determines all the traits and characteristics of all living things.
- A human being has 46 chromosomes in every nucleus of the cell. Two chromosomes are sex chromosomes (XX for female
and XY for male) the remaining 44 chromosomes are responsible for all other characteristics that we have which are not
related to sex.

HORMONES
- Hormones play an important role in the expression of all physical and physiological sexual characteristics as a person.
- as triggered by the hypothalamus
that is located at the middle of the
brain, the pituitary gland produces
the luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating
hormone (FSH)

LUTEINIZING HORMONE (LH)

- Is responsible for the production of Sex hormones testosterone
and estrogen.

Testosterone – regulates production of sperm cells.

Estrogen – regulates production of egg cells. Pituitary Gland
FOLLICLE STIMULATING HORMONE (FSH)
- Triggers the egg cell to mature in the ovary

MALE and FEMALE Reproductive System

MALE
Parts Functions
Ureter/Urethra Passageway of semen (combination of fluid and sperm
cells) and urine
Seminal Vesicle Produces fluid that helps in easy transport of the sperms
Prostate Produces substance that nourishes the sperm
Vas Deferens Passageway of sperm cells from the epididymis to the
urethra
Epididymis Stores newly-formed sperm cells
Testes The male gonads; produces sperm cells
Penis Copulatory organ; transfers the sperms into the female body
Scrotum Sac covering and protecting the testes

FEMALE
Parts Functions
Vagina The birth canal; receives sperm cells from the penis
Cervix Boundary between vagina and the uterus
Ovary Female gonads; Produces egg cells (ova)
Uterus Mother’s womb; houses the developing fetus
Fallopian Tube Site for fertilization; passageway of egg cells
(Oviducts)

It is important to emphasize that the main purpose of the human reproductive system is for procreation or continuation of human life.
When the sperm cell fertilizes the egg cell, a zygote is formed. It is the start of a new life, a new human being.

2. PSYCHOLOGICAL DIMENSION

It includes self-acceptance, social skills or the perception of control over what happens in your surroundings.

Persons with a positive body image and a sound mind usually enjoy a happy and satisfying sexual relationship. Persons with
negative boy image and insecurity end up with unhappy and failing sexual relationship.

3. SOCIOCULTURAL DIMENSION

The society surrounding a person greatly contributes to his/her sexuality. It includes the family, school, and people form the
neighbourhood. Different countries have different culture even when it comes to sexuality.

These 3 Dimensions (Biological, Psychological, and Sociocultural) are integrated factors that influence one’s
decision or way of thinking relating to sexuality

Thoughts and feelings about human sexuality is a little bit confusing. To help clarify your thoughts and feelings answer the following
statements. You do not need to let anyone see your response.

1. To me sexuality means
