1. Basic P91 Server Setup
This chapter identifies the basic parts of the P91 (Dell PowerEdge T710 server with Intel Xeon
processor) and explains how to determine which interface cards and internal/external drives are
used with each P91 server.
This chapter contains all the information necessary to set up the P91 server.
The P91 servers are shipped preconfigured from Invensys with all cards, internal hard drives, and
Windows Server® 2008 R2 operating system installed. Before performing any procedures
described in this document, you must determine the following information about your P91
server:
 Type of software installed (process engineering station or process operator station)
 Number of monitors used with the P91 server
 Size of internal system hard drive
 Type of Ethernet card(s) (if present)
 Available I/O interface cards (if present)
 Determine Redundant Array of Independent Disks (RAID) level: RAID 1 or
RAID 5.

Determining Your P91 Server’s Configuration

You can determine basic information about your P91 server (described at the beginning of this
chapter) from the P91 server’s P-Code.
A P-Code is a production code used to identify a machine and its hardware configuration. The P-
Code can be found on a label on the top of the P91 server. The label is illustrated in Figure 1-1.
The information found on this label lets you identify:
 P-Code for your P91 server
 Style type
 Revision level
 Serial number.

NOTE
If you are unable to locate your P-Code, or you have made modifications to your
machine without updating the P-Code, contact 1-866-746-6477, or outside the
U.S., 508-549-2424 for assistance.

P91 Server Power Supplies

Input Voltage
The P91 server power supplies are redundant multi-ranging power supplies that automatically
accept power from 115 V AC (nominal) through 230 V AC (nominal) at 50 through 60 Hz. The
power supplies are switched automatically for 120 V AC or 230 V AC operation.
Each of the two redundant supplies need a line cord. For power security purposes, it is recom-
mended that they be plugged into separate power circuits, one of which is a UPS.

Power Button Operating Indicators

The power button has a built-in light that can provide power status information. The following
table describes the power button’s light patterns and their functions:

P91 Server Interface Cards

Based on the P91 server’s P-Code, you should know which cards are installed in your P91
server. You should be familiar with your P91 server’s ports and external features, as described in
“Rear Panel Connectors” on page 6, and your P91 server’s internal configuration, as described in
“Determining Your P91 Server’s Configuration” on page 1.
Before installing any software on your P91 server, ensure all the P91 server’s interface cards are
installed properly and all peripherals are connected to the P91 server. To install a card in your P91
server, refer to Chapter 2 “Installing Hardware Upgrades”. This chapter provides information on
which interface cards are available for installation in your P91 server and how to install new cards
and card drivers (if required).

NOTE
Occasionally, the P91’s interface cards may become unseated during shipping. If
this happens, you must re-seat the cards properly before using the server.

Setting CMOS BIOS Parameters

The CMOS BIOS parameters for the P91 server are preset at the factory before shipment of the
server; the parameters in this section are provided for reference. If these parameters are not config-
ured as described in this section, you may encounter problems when using your P91. The Inter-
rupt Request numbers (IRQ) are set by the BIOS and need not be changed by the user.

8
1. Basic P91 Server Setup B0700FP – Rev A

The CMOS BIOS may be checked at the P91 server’s startup, regardless of whether I/A Series
software or Windows Server® 2008 R2 operating system has been loaded onto the machine.
Proceed as follows to check and configure the setup parameters for the CMOS BIOS for your P91
server.
1. Press the F2 key when prompted (in the upper-right corner of the screen) after turn-
ing on the P91 server to run the BIOS setup.
2. The first BIOS settings page appears after the RAID devices go through their BIOS
checks. Set the parameters in the BIOS to the values listed in Table 1-6 for the P91
server.
Press the Up Arrow and Down Arrow keys to move the cursor up or down. Press the
Space bar or Enter keys to select. Press the Right Arrow, Left Arrow, Space, + or - keys
to change the values. Press Esc to exit, then press Enter to save and exit.

below.

Local Video and Sound Connections

Connect the video and speakers as shown in Figure 1-9. A dual or quad-head video card is
required for all cable lengths. Use of the integrated video is not supported.

Local Multiple-Monitor Connections

Dual/quad-head local/extended monitors (that is, up to 100 feet) may be configured as illustrated
in Figure 1-5, Figure 1-7, and Figure 1-10 by using the dual-head or quad-head PCIe video card.
Their optionally associated USB touchscreens are cabled via the 100-foot P0923DY/DZ exten-
sion kit.
For human interface devices (that is, monitors, touchscreens, mouse, keyboard, etc.), which need
to be mounted up to 250 m (820 feet) from the Model P91, use the Remote Graphics Unit
(RGU) that is described in the section “Remote Connections” on page 26. These RGU connec-
tions are illustrated in Figure 1-6 and Figure 1-8.

Local Touchscreen Cabling Connections

USB touchscreens do not require a GCIO. The former serial interface touchscreens connected to
the GCIO modules are not supported in systems with I/A Series software v8.8 and later.
The Model P91 server can support one or two touchscreen monitors (see Figure 1-10) or up to

Remote Connections
The P91 server can be configured with a Remote Graphics Unit PCIe card that connects to a dual
or quad Remote Graphics Unit (RGU). Two versions of RGUs are available:
 Dual RGU with 2 Display ports supporting DVI video connections to one or two
monitors.
 Quad RGU with 4 Display ports supporting DVI video connections up to four
monitors.
The RGU is connected to the Remote Graphics Unit PCIe card installed in the P91 server by a
fiber-optic cable. USB connections of keyboard, mouse, trackball, touchscreens, and audio are

26
1. Basic P91 Server Setup B0700FP – Rev A

supported through the RGU, which allows the P91 server to be located at distances from the
RGU of up to 70 meters (230 ft) with 62.5/125 µm fiber or 150 m (492 ft) with 50/125 µm fiber
cable.
The RGU features five USB 2.0 ports (one which supports a BIOS level keyboard), and passive
(fanless) cooling. The RGU also includes a universal input power supply.

Remote Connections Notes and Warnings

1. If you want to set up the P91 BIOS, you must install a local keyboard. The P91 BIOS
setup is not accessible from the Remote Graphics Unit.
2. If you want to use the remote touchscreen capability, you cannot connect the touch-
screen through the USB hub. Connect the touchscreen cable from the RGU directly
to the monitor. Refer to Figure 1-6 and Figure 1-8.
3. Since the RGU is an extension of the P91’s PCI bus, the fiber connection between the
P91 and the Remote Graphics Unit must stay connected for the P91 to run. If this
fiber cable is disconnected, the P91 server will halt.
4. The Remote Graphics Unit must remain powered for the P91 to run. If the unit is
unpowered, the P91 will halt. For this reason, it is highly recommended to power the

27
B0700FP – Rev A 1. Basic P91 Server Setup

RGU with an uninterruptible power source (UPS) so the server does not hang because
of a power outage at the remote site.
5. When the RGU PCIe card is installed in the P91 server, you must use the RGU for
video connections; you cannot use the integrated video port. The integrated video
port is disabled when the RGU PCIe card is installed.

Remote Cabling
Connecting the RGU module to the server requires fiber cables; MMF with LC/LC ends. (A 15
meter starter cable is included with each RGU.) Part numbers for these cables are listed below.
The 62.5 µm, MMF cable lengths between 50 and 150 meters and the 50 µm, MMF cables
which extend to 250 meters are customer-supplied.

Recovery Procedure
The following procedure restores your system’s hard disk to its original state when shipped from
Invensys (Windows Server 2008 R2 operating system, all required drivers). If RAID is used, the
RAID set must be created and intact before installing the operating system.

! WARNING
Use this procedure with caution. It will reformat the hard drive and overwrite all the
data that is currently on your hard disk drive. If you need any data on the hard
drive, you need to back it up or copy it off before doing a quick restore.

Proceed as follows:

NOTE
If using an RGU, you must use a local keyboard (a USB keyboard plugged into the
P91 server) for Step 2.

1. Turn on the monitor.

This chapter provides configuration procedures for setting up the video driver.

Configuring the Video Driver

The P91 server can use any of the following cards for display output:
 Dual PCIexpress Card Display port/DVI Video Generator (default)
 Quad PCIexpress Card Display port/DVI Video Generator (optional)
 Dual PCIexpress Card VGA/DVI Video Generator (optional)
 Quad PCIexpress Card VGA Video Generator (optional)
 RGU Dual, Quad RGU (optional)

NOTE
If you are using the default Display Port/DVI dual-head video card with FoxView
software, you do not need to install a video driver; the Windows operating system
installs the correct dual-head driver.

If using a single display, use the first port of the dual-head video card; no additional configuration
is required. Multiple monitor configurations may require different drivers, depending on which
video card you use. If you are using a dual-head video card with FoxView software, you do not
need to install a video driver; the Windows operating system installs the correct dual-head driver.
You must configure the video card driver for span mode if required to support Wonderware
InTouch® software. Additionally, you are responsible for configuring dual and quad-head video
drivers to support multiple monitor configuration physical layouts.

Optional Video Drivers

When loading and configuring optional Matrox video drivers, you must “uninstall” all NVIDIA
items loaded as part of the default operating system using the Control Panel -> Programs and
Features tool. It is recommended the NVIDA products be uninstalled and the workstation or
server rebooted prior to installing and configuring the new driver.

The Recommended resolutions for various monitors can be found in the table “Recommended
Resolution for Display Devices” in Flat Panel Monitor Software Setup for UNIX® and Windows®
Workstations (B0193PL).

Alarm Manager Dual-Head or Quad-Head Video Configurations

By default, the Alarm Manager chooses its window size based on the size of the overall desktop. In
a dual or quad-headed configuration, this choice may not be optimal.
After I/A Series software is installed there are two methods that can be used to change the size and
position of the Alarm Manager:
 Use the graphical Alarm/Display Manager configurator, which is described in Work-
station Alarm Management (B0700AT) or
 Manually edit the Alarm Manager configuration file which is described as follows:
1. Save a backup of the following file: D:\usr\fox\customer\alarms\cfg\am_def.cfg
2. Open the original am_def.cfg file in an editor (such as Wordpad or vi).
3. Corresponding to each type of Alarm Manager window is a line that contains the
string: WinSizPos.
These lines determine the size and position of each window, and can be edited to pro-
vide a more desirable layout. Table 5-1 provides the parameters available to you to use
in this string.
For example, in a configuration with four heads arranged in a 2x2 array, a good choice
is to make the windows quarter screen. To do this, change every WinSizPos line to
QUR for quarter screen, upper right. You can search and replace these settings as long
as case sensitivity is on.

6. Installing I/A Series Software
This chapter provides documentation references for you to proceed with the initial installation
(Day 0) of your I/A Series software. This procedure is specific to the hardware platform defined
in Chapter 1 “Basic P91 Server Setup” of this document.
You must install the I/A Series software yourself, as described in “Installing I/A Series Software on
a New P91 Server” below, after connecting your P91 server to its network(s). The network inter-
face card and other cards must be correctly installed with the correct drivers prior to I/A Series
software installation.
The following sections describe the complete I/A Series software configuration specifically
designed for the P91 servers with P-Codes P91*********, Style H. To determine your P91 server’s
P-Code, refer to “Determining Your P91 Server’s Configuration” on page 1. These instructions do
not apply to any other styles of the P91 Series processors.

Installing I/A Series Software on a New P91 Server

Before you install I/A Series software, however, make sure that the workstation is physically con-
nected to the network and, if required, that any network interface card drivers are updated. Refer
to the notes below.

NOTE
1. The P91 Dell T710 with Windows Server 2008 R2 operating system is qualified
to run I/A Series software V8.8 or later, I/A Series software versions 8.7 and earlier
are not supported.
2. Refer to the release-specific documentation for additional details on installing I/A
Series software.
3. The Allen-Bradley™ PKTX card is not supported on the I/A Series P91 server at
I/A version 8.8.

! WARNING
For installations with an I/A Series network, do not install I/A Series software before
the workstation has been connected to The Mesh network. Refer to Chapter 1
“Basic P91 Server Setup” to determine how to connect your workstation physically
to The Mesh network.

B0700FP – Rev A 6. Installing I/A Series Software

! CAUTION
It is now an option to use a USB floppy disk drive to input System Definition
Commit data to perform I/A Series software v8.8 installations. If you are using a
floppy diskette to input the Commit data for I/A Series software installation, ensure
that the USB floppy disk drive is plugged into the workstation before you start the
I/A Series software installation process. If the USB disk drive is not plugged into the
server and the Commit disk is requested by the I/A Series installation program, an
error message displaying Floppy drive not available appears. This closes the
installation program and all the errors are recorded in a log file. This also forces re-
imaging of the operating system and re-installation of the I/A Series software.

I/A Series software V8.8 installation procedure is documented in the I/A Series V8.8 Software
Installation Guide (B0700SF). Follow the installation instructions associated with that release.

NOTE
To restore the Windows Server 2008 R2 operating system, you must perform the
steps described in Chapter 3 “Image Recovery,Windows Server 2008 R2 Operating
System” of this document.

Recommendations
It is recommended that you perform the following tasks once you complete I/A Series system
installation:
 Use the Reconcile diskette to update the system configuration files using the
System Definition Reconcile utility. Refer to System Definition online Help for
procedures.
 Perform Windows operating system backup. Backup procedures are described in
Symantec System Recovery 2011 (Workstation Edition and Server Edition Guide For
I/A Series Workstations) (B0700ES).
You have completed installing I/A Series software for your P91 server.
