I. Learning Explain how solar and lunar eclipses occur Code:

Competency/ies using models S7ES-IVj

II. Content ECLIPSES

When an opaque object blocks sunlight, a shadow is formed. The
darker portion where the light is totally blocked is called umbra. The lighter
part where the light is partially blocked is called penumbra.
Eclipses are natural phenomena that result from the relative position of
the sun, Earth, and the moon.
A solar eclipse happens when the moon completely or partially blocks
the sun’s light and its shadow falls on Earth’s surface.
Key Concept/
The three types of Solar eclipse are total, partial, and annular solar
Understanding to be eclipse.
developed
Lunar Eclipse occur when the moon moves within the shadow of the
Earth.
The three types of Lunar Eclipse are: penumbral, partial, and total. A
penumbral lunar eclipse happens when the moon passes through the
penumbra of Earth’s shadow. A partial lunar eclipse occurs when only a part
of the full moon passes through the umbra of Earth’s shadow. A total lunar
eclipse occurs when the moon passes through the umbra of Earth’s shadow.

Develop the virtue of perseverance especially when dealing with

Attitude difficult tasks.
Interact harmoniously with others.
Display intellectual honesty in doing and answering each assigned task.

Values Respect and Concern for Others / God-Fearing and Principle-Centered

b. Developing
Activities Students will answer the following science trivia questions below:
Drill 1. The food or chemical energy source made by plants through photosynthesis.
Ans: Glucose
2. This essential gas is important so we can breathe.
Ans: Oxygen
3. Plant-eating organisms.

SHADOW PLAY

Motivation

Teacher asks:
 What is the picture all about?
 How does shadow is formed?
 What are the things needed in order to create a shadow?
Presentation  What is opaque object?

Did you know that shadows are responsible for the occurrence of eclipses?

Demonstrating Eclipse
Use globe, ball and a flashlight to demonstrate the lesson. Student will analyze
what’s happened after projecting the flashlight in the ball towards the globe.
ACTIVITY
Teacher asks:
 What do the flashlight, ball and globe represent?
 What was created after the flashlight hitting the ball?
 If I put the globe behind the ball, what did you observed?
 If I put the ball behind the globe, what did you observed?
 What phenomenon is being demonstrated on this activity?
d. Analysis 1. How do eclipse occur?
2. Why do eclipses not occur regularly?
3. What are the two types of eclipses?
4. What is Solar Eclipse?
5. What are the three types of solar eclipse?
6. What is Lunar Eclipse?
7. What are the three types of lunar eclipse?
e. Abstraction A guided multimedia discussion about the lesson will be facilitated to the class.
Discussion
1. How do eclipse occur?
It occurs when the Sun, Earth and Moon are positioned along a straight
path
The moon blocks the sun, the people on earth will not see the sun for a
period of time.
The moon also forms a shadow on the surface of the earth as it block the
sun.

The darker inner region of a shadow is called the UMBRA

The grey outer region is called the PENUMBRA

2. Why do eclipses not occur regularly?

Eclipses do not happen frequently because the earth, sun and moon are not
always aligned on a straight path or in the same plane.
Specifically, eclipse occur during the NEW MOON or FULL MOON.
There are only about 3 solar, and 3 lunar eclipses occur in one year.

3. What are the two types of eclipses?

A video presentation about the occurrence of solar eclipse will be presented to the
class.

4. What is Solar Eclipse?

Solar eclipse occurs during new a moon and takes place during the day
A SOLAR ECLIPSE can only last for about 7.5 minutes.
Not everyone has the chance to observe eclipses. Your location on the
shadow of the moon casted on earth will determine the type of solar eclipse you
will observe.

5. What are the three types of solar eclipse?

If your place is located on the umbra of the moon’s shadow,
you will observe the total solar eclipse.
On the other hand, if your place is located on the penumbra of the
moon’s shadow, you will observe Partial solar eclipse.
The annular solar eclipse occur when the moon is farthest from earth.
This creates another types of shadow called ANTUMBRA
Indeed, the solar eclipse is one of the spectacular phenomena that you
can observe in the sky.
However, you should always remember that looking directly at the sun during
the solar eclipse is not a safe practice as it can cause retinal burn which can lead to
permanent blindness.

You must use eclipse glasses in observing eclipses.

4. What is Lunar Eclipse?

During a lunar eclipse, the earth is positioned between the sun and the
moon. The earth blocks the light coming from the sun to the moon in this case,
the Earth’s shadow falls on the moon.
It occurs during the full moon and it can be observe during night time

5. What are the three types of lunar eclipse?

When the moon is located at the umbra of the earth’s shadow, total
lunar eclipse occur.
It happens when the moon and the sun are on exact opposite sides of the
Earth.
When the moon travels at the penumbra of the earth’s shadow, a
penumbral lunar eclipse occur.
On the other hand, if part of the moon is located at the penumbra while
the other part is at the umbra of the shadow of the earth, a partial lunar eclipse
occur.

To check on student’s understanding of the lesson, they will be tasked to answer the
following orally:
 What have you learned from our lesson today?
Generalization Possible answer:
When an opaque object blocks sunlight, a shadow is formed. The darker portion where
the light is totally blocked is called umbra. The lighter part where the light is partially blocked
is called penumbra.
Eclipses are natural phenomena that result from the relative position of the sun, Earth,
and the moon.
A solar eclipse happens when the moon completely or partially blocks the sun’s light
and its shadow falls on Earth’s surface.
The three types of Solar eclipse are total, partial, and annular solar eclipse.
Lunar Eclipse occur when the moon moves within the shadow of the Earth.
The three types of Lunar Eclipse are: penumbral, partial, and total. A penumbral lunar eclipse
happens when the moon passes through the penumbra of Earth’s shadow. A partial lunar
eclipse occurs when only a part of the full moon passes through the umbra of Earth’s shadow.
A total lunar eclipse occurs when the moon passes through the umbra of Earth’s shadow.
APPLICATION Activity: FACT OR BLUFF!
Students will be called to read the statement carefully. If the statement is Correct, they
will say FACT!, otherwise, they will say BLUFF!

IV. 1. Between solar and lunar eclipse, which is harder to observe. Explain
EVALUATION Write your answer on the clean sheet of paper.
