Metal as reducing agents
1. If a reaction occurs, complete and balance the equation. Write NR if
there is no reaction observed. Assume elemental iron will react to
form iron (II).

Balanced Equation
CuSO4(aq) + Cu(s) → Cu2SO4 [NO REACTION]
CuSO4(aq) + Mg(s) → Cu + MgSO4
CuSO4(aq) + Zn(s) → Cu + ZnSO4
CuSO4(aq) + Fe(s) → Cu + Fe(SO4)

2H2SO4(aq) + Cu(s) → CuSO4 + SO2 + 2H2O [NO REACTION]

H2SO4(aq) + Mg(s) → H2 + MgSO4
H2SO4(aq) + Zn(s) → H2 + ZnSO4
3H2SO4(aq) + 2Fe(s) → 3H2 + Fe2(SO4)2

2ZnSO4(aq) + Cu(s) → 2Zn + Cu(SO4)2 [NO REACTION]

ZnSO4(aq) + Mg(s) → Zn + MgSO4
ZnSO4(aq) + Zn(s) → Zn2SO4 [NO REACTION]
2ZnSO4(aq) + Fe(s) → 2Zn + Fe(SO4)2 [NO REACTION]
2. Arrange the four metals and hydrogen in the order of their activities
beginning with the best reducing agent and ending with the
poorest reducing agent.

I. Mg
II. Zn
III. Fe
IV. H
V. Cu

Part B

Solution for redox reaction

Test Solution X Observation and Redox Reaction
Tube Equation (if any)
0.1 M Fe(NH4)2(SO4) 0.1 M K2C2O4
1 0.01 M KMnO4 Colour change from
+ purple to light yellow
2 drops 6 M H2SO4
2 0.01 M KMnO4 From yellow to
colourless
+
2 drops 6 M H2SO4
3 0.01 M K2Cr2O7 Colour change from
+ purple to brown
2 drops 6 M H2SO4
4 0.01 M K2Cr2O7 No reaction
+
2 drops 6 M H2SO4
In experiment of part B, we have 4 test tube. For the first tube, we mix
0.01M KMnO4 with 2 drops 6M H2SO4. The observation that we can see,
the color change from purple to light yellow. The color change changes
occur oxidation and reduction reaction mostly. The second tube, we also
mix 0.01 KMnO4 with 2 drops 6M H2SO4, but the observation of 0.1M
K2C2O4 that we can see the color changes from yellow to colorless.

The movement of the transfer of electrons from one reactant to another is

the study of electrochemistry. Electrons can move spontaneously from
higher energy levels to lower energy levels within an atom. This transfer of
electrons from one chemical substance to another is known as an oxidation-
reduction (redox) or electron transfer reaction. Redox agents are
responsible for the visible color changes as well as changes in property in
some instances. This is because a color change indicates that a chemical
reaction has taken place.
