O. Henri was the pen-name of William Sydney Porter

(1862-1910), one of the most famous short-story writers.
His life was a tragic one because he was sentenced to five
years in prison accused of fraudulent appropriation of
funds at the bank where he worked as a cashier. In spite of
this, life gave him a profound knowledge of human
character, especially of inhabitants in big cities who are
unfortunate in life.

As a story-teller, he is remarkable for his ingenuity in the use of ironical coincidences, for
his skilful plots and because he was particularly clever at writing stories with an
unexpected ending. WHILE THE AUTO WAITS is a good example of this...

While the Auto Waits Mientras el Auto Espera

Promptly at the beginning of twilight, came
again to that quiet corner of that quiet, small
park the girl in gray. She sat upon a bench
and read a book, for there was yet to come a
half hour in which print could be read.
A principios de primavera la joven vestida de gris
volvió, como de costumbre, al quieto rincón del
pequeño y silencioso parque. Sentóse sobre un
banco y comenzó a leer un libro, porque faltaba
media hora, para lo que ella sabía.

To repeat: Her dress was gray, and plain but
perfect in style and fit. A large-meshed veil,
imprisoned her hat and a face that shone
through it with a calm and unconscious
beauty. She had come there at the same hour
on the previous day, and on the day before
that; and there was one who knew it.
Repitámoslo: vestía de gris. Y tan sencillo que así
lograba ocultar su impecabilidad de estilo y corte.
Un amplio velo semiocultaba su sombrero en forma
de turbante, y su rostro, que irradiaba una serena y
no buscada belleza. Había ido allí los dos días
anteriores, y una persona que no lo ignoraba.

The young man who knew it was waiting near
by. His impatience was rewarded, for, in
turning a page, her book slipped from her
fingers and bounded from the bench a full
yard away.
El joven que no lo ignoraba acercábase allí
ofreciendo mentales sacrificios en el ara de la
suerte. Y su piedad fue recompensada porque, al
volver la mujer una página, el libro se le deslizó de
las manos y cayó al suelo, a un paso de distancia
del banco.

The young man seized it with great audacity, El hombre lo recogió con instantánea avidez y lo

and hope. In a pleasant voice, he risked a esperanza. Con placentera voz, aventuró un
simple remark upon the weather - that
introductory subject responsible for so much
of the world's unhappiness - and stood by for
a moment, awaiting his fate.
The girl looked him over leisurely; at his
ordinary neat dress and his features that
showed no particular expression.
'You may sit down, if you like,' she said, in a
full, slow contralto. 'Really, I would like to have
you do so. The light is too bad for reading. I
would prefer to talk.'
He slid upon the seat by her side with
politeness. 'Do you know,' he said, speaking
the formula with which park chairmen open
their meetings, 'that you are quite the most
beautiful girl I have seen in a long time? I had
my eye on you yesterday. Didn't know
somebody was knocked down by those pretty
lamps of yours, did you, honeysuckle?'
'Whoever you are,' said the girl in icy tones,
'you must remember that I am a lady. I will
excuse the remark you have just made
because the mistake was, doubtless, not an
unnatural one - in your circle, I asked. you to
sit down; if the invitation must make me your
honeysuckle, consider it withdrawn.'
'I earnestly beg your pardon,' pleaded the
young man. 'It was my fault, you know, - I
mean, there are girls in parks, you know - that
is, of course, you don't know, but...'
'Abandon the subject, if you please. Of course
I know. Now, tell me about these people
passing and crowding, each way, along these
paths. Where are they going? Why do they
hurry so? Are they happy?'
The young man could not guess the role he
would be expected to play. 'It is interesting to
watch them,' he replied. 'It's the wonderful
drama of life. Some are going to supper and
some to - er - other places. One wonders what
their histories are.'
'I do not,' said the girl; 'I am not so curious. I
come here to sit because here, only, can I be
near the great, common, beating heart of
humanity. My part in life is played where its
beats are never felt. Can you guess why I
spoke to you, Mr...
comentario sobre el tiempo -ese manido tema que
ha causado tantas infelicidades en este mundo- y
luego permaneció inmóvil un momento, esperando
su destino.
La muchacha lo miró despaciosamente. En el
vestido corriente de aquel hombre y en sus
facciones no se distinguía nada de extraordinario.
-Puede sentarse si gusta -dijo con lenta y llena voz
de contralto- Por mi parte no me molesta. Hace muy
poca claridad para seguir leyendo y preferiría un
rato de charla.
El vasallo de la suerte se sentó al lado de la mujer,
muy satisfecho. Y habló en seguida, empleando la
fórmula que los conquistadores, de parque eligen
para sus, parlamentos. -¿Sabe que es usted la
mujer más asombrosamente guapa que he
conocido? Me fijé en usted ayer. ¿No hay nadie,
nena mía, que viva deslumbrado por esos dos faros
que tiene usted en la cara?
La muchacha habló con tono glacial: -Quienquiera
que sea usted, ha de empezar por saber que yo soy
una dama. Le excuso sus palabras porque, sin
duda, son muy naturales en su ambiente. Le
autoricé a que, se sentara a mi lado, pero si la,
autorización va a constituirme en nena suya,
considérela retirada.
El joven se expresó suplicantemente. -Le pido
perdón. A su expresión satisfecha había sucedido
otra de penitencia y humildad. La culpa ha sido mía
-dijo- Ya sabe que. hay muchachas en los
parques... Bueno, usted no lo sabe, pero... Porque
yo...
-Dejemos eso. Desde luego, sé lo que pasa con las
muchachas de los parques. Pero prefiero que
hablemos de otra cosa. Por ejemplo, de la gente
que va y viene por estos senderos. ¿Adónde se
dirigen? ¿Por qué tienen tanta prisa? ¿Serán
felices?
El joven abandonó casi en el acto sus aires de
donjuan plebeyo. No sabía el papel que le indicaban
que jugase y lo más prudente era esperar. -Desde
luego, es interesante examinarlos -respondió,
pesando bien sus palabras- Al fin y al cabo,
representan, el, maravilloso drama de la vida.
Algunos van a cenar y otros..., a otros sitios. Pero
no conocemos sus respectivas historias...
Yo tampoco lo sé -dijo la muchacha y, por otra
parte, no soy demasiado inquisitiva. Si vengo aqui
es para sentirme más cerca del grande, vibrante y
común corazón de la humanidad. Porque vivo en un
ambiente al que no llegan, los latidos de la gente.
¿Comprende por qué deseo hablarle, señor ... ?
'Parkenstacker,' said the young man. Then he
looked eager and hopeful.
'No, said the girl, holding up a slender finger,
and smiling slightly. 'You would recognize it
immediately. It is impossible to keep one's
name out of print. Or even one's portrait. This
veil and this hat of my maid's hide my identity.
You should have seen the chauffeur stare at it
when he thought I did not see. Frankly, there
are five or six names that belong in the holy of
holies, and mine, by accident of birth, is one of
them. I spoke to you, Mr Stackenpot...
'Parkenstacker,' corrected the young man,
modestly.
Mr Parkenstacker, because I wanted to talk,
for once, with a natural man - one unspoiled
by wealth and supposed social superiority.
Oh! you do not know how weary I am of it -
money, money, money! And of the men who
surround me, dancing like dolls all cut by the
same pattern. I am sick of pleasure, of jewels,
of travel, of society, of luxuries of all kinds.'
'I always had an idea,' uttered the young man,
hesitatingly, 'that money must be a pretty good
thing.'
'Enough money for living comfortably is to be
desired. But when you have so many millions
that...!' She concluded the sentence with a
gesture of despair. 'It is the monotony of it,'
she continued, that bores. Drives, dinners,
theatre s, b alls, suppers, with the gilding of
too much wealth over it all. Some times the
very tinkle of the ice in my champagne glass
nearly drives me mad.'
Mr Parkenstacker looked frankly interested.
'I have always liked,' he said, 'to read and
hear about the ways of wealthy and
fashionable folks. I suppose I am a bit of a
snob. But I like to have my information
accurate. Now, I had formed the opinion that
champagne is cooled in the bottle and not by
placing ice in the glass.'
The girl gave a musical laugh of real
amusement. 'You should know,' she
explained, in a patient tone, that we of the
non-useful class depend for our amusement
upon change. Just now it is the fashion to put
ice in champagne. The idea was originated by
a visiting Prince of Tartary while dining at the
Waldorf. It will soon give way to some other
Parkenstacker -completó el joven. Parecía, animoso
y esperanzado.
La joven alzó el dedo índice y esbozó una ligera
sonrisa. -No. Lo hubiera reconocido
inmediatamente. Es imposible disfrazar el nombre
de uno. La misma cara lo dice. Este velo y este
sombrero (que son de una doncella mía y me
proporcionan un relativo incógnito. Sí, ¿verdad?
Pues mi chofer, cuando piensa que no lo veo, me
dirige unas miradas... Porque ocurre, sinceramente
hablando, que entre esos cuatro o cinco apellidos
que pueden considerarse incluidos en el santuario
de los santuarios, el mío es uno de ellos. Como le
decía, señor Stackenpot...
-Parkenstacker -corrigió, modesto, el joven.
-Como le decía, señor Parkenstacker, deseaba
hablar a alguien que perteneciese a un medio
natural y no echado a perder por los despreciables
matices de la riqueza, y la posición social. No sabe
lo harta que estoy de lo mismo. Dinero, dinero,
dinero... Estoy harta también de los hombres que
me rodean y que danzan en torno mío como si
fuesen marionetas, todos cortados por la misma
tijera. Estoy harta de los placeres, de las joyas, de
Ios viajes, de la sociedad y de toda clase de lujos.
El joven dijo, titubeante: -Yo siempre he creído que
el dinero era una cosa muy útil.
-Siempre es útil no estar siendo un nadie, entre
otros. Pero cuando se tienen millones de sobra... La
muchacha concluyó la sentencia con un ademán de
desesperación. -Lo que molesta -continuó- es la
monotonía que encierra. Viajes, comidas, teatros,
bailes, cenas nocturnas, y todo bajo el signo de la
dorada opulencia. A veces casi me vuelve loca el
tintinear del hielo en mi copa de champaña.
Parkenstacker se mostró ingenuamente interesado.
-Siempre me ha gustado -dijo- conocer estas cosas
de los aristócratas y ricos. Debo ser un tonto, pero,
en todo caso, deseo informarme bien de la realidad.
Yo creía que el champaña se enfriaba en las
botellas y no directamente en las copas.
La joven soltó una risa musical de auténtica
diversión. -Mire -explicó, con tono de indulgencia-,
los que pertenecemos a las clases inútiles
fundamos nuestra importancia en apartarnos de los
precedentes establecidos. Y ahora precisamente se
ha puesto de moda mezclar el hielo con el
champaña. La idea la dio un príncipe de Tartaria
que estaba de paso en Nueva York y que paraba en
new idea. Just as at a dinner party this week
on Madison Avenue a green glove was laid by
the plate of each guest to be put on and used
while eating olives.
'I see,' admitted the young man, humbly.
'These special amusements of the inner circle
do not become known to the common public.'
'Sometimes,' continued the girl,
acknowledging his confession of error by a
slight bow, 'I have thought that if I ever should
love a man it would be one of lowly station.
One who is a worker and not a drone. But
doubtless the demands of caste and wealth
will be stronger than my wishes. What is it that
makes me tell you these things, Mr
Packenstarker?'
'Parkenstacker,' breathed the young man.
'Indeed, you cannot know how much I.
appreciate your confidences.'
The girl regarded him with the calm,
impersonal look that befitted the difference in
their stations.'
What is your line of business, Mr
Parkenstacker?' she asked.
A very humble one. But I hope to rise in the
world. Were you really in earnest when you
said that you could love a man of lowly
position?'
'Indeed I was. But I said "might". There is a
Grand Duke and a Marquis pursuing me. Yes;
no position could be too humble were the man
what I would wish him to be.
'I work,' declared Mr Parkenstacker, 'in a
restaurant.'
The girl shrank slightly. 'Not as a waiter?' she
said, almost pleading. 'Labour is noble, but, -
personal service, you know - valets and - '
'I am not a waiter. I am cashier in' -on the
street they faced beyond the opposite side of
the park was the brilliant electric sign
'RESTAURANT' -'I am cashier in that
restaurant you see there.'
The girl glanced at a tiny watch set in a
bracelet upon her left wrist, and rose,
hurriedly. She pushed her book into a
glittering bag, for which, however, the book
was too large.
el Waldorf. Dentro de poco sobrevendrá otro
capricho. Esta semana, en un banquete en la
avenida Madison, a cada invitado se le puso junto al
plato un guante de cabritilla verde para coger las
aceitunas.
El joven admitió con humildad: -Comprendo. Esas
diversiones especiales de la gente de alta
importancia social no llegan a ser conocidas de las
personas de condición modesta.
La joven se inclinó ligeramente, como perdonando
aquel leve yerro. -A veces he pensado que, si
alguna vez me enamorase de un hombre, había de
pertenecer a la clase baja. De un trabajador y no de
un vago. Pero las exigencias de la riqueza y la
casta, son más fuertes que mi inclinación. Por qué
le confiaré estas cosas, señor Packenstarker?
-Parkenstacker---corrigió el joven-. Verdaderamente
no sabe lo que aprecio su confianza.
La muchacha le contempló con una mirada fría e
impersonal apropiada a la diferencia de sus
posiciones sociales.
-A qué se dedica usted, señor Parkenstacker? -
continuó.
A algo muy humilde. Pero espero abrirme camino
en el mundo. ¿Hablaba de verdad cuando dijo, que
preferiría, antes que con otros, casarse con un
hombre de modesta posición social?
-Hablé de verdad. Sólo que en condicional. Como
están un gran duque y un marqués... Sí, nada me
importaría que un hombre fuese muy humilde en su
oficio, con tal de que resultase tal como yo quisiera.
Parkenstacker declaró: -Yo trabajo en un
restaurante...
-¿De camarero? -dijo la muchacha,
estremeciéndose, ligeramente- No porque el trabajo
no sea noble, sino porque esos servicios
personales, como ayuda de cámara o...
-No soy camarero; soy cajero en... Señaló un cartel
eléctrico que al otro lado del parque decía
"RESTAURANTE". -Soy cajero en ese
establecimiento.
La muchacha consultó un reloj de puIsera, de rico
diseño, que llevaba en el brazo izquierdo, y se
levantó presurosamente. Guardó el libro en un
esplendente bolso que llevaba suspendido, a la
cintura y para el que el libro resultaba demasiado
grande.

'Why are you not at work?' she asked.
'I am on the night turn,' said the young man; 'it
is yet an hour before my period begins. May I
not hope to see you again?'
'I do not know. Perhaps - but the fancy may
not seize me again. I must go quickly now.
There is a dinner, and a box at the play,- and
oh! the same old round. Perhaps you. noticed
an automobile at the upper corner of the park
as you came.' One with a white body.'
'And red wheels?' asked the young man,
frowning thoughtfully.
'Yes, I always come in that. Pierre waits for
me there. He supposes me to be shopping in
the department store across the square.
Imagine a life wherein we must deceive even
our chauffeurs. Goodnight.'
'But it is dark now, said Mr Parkenstacker, and
the park is full of rude men. May I not walk...?'
'If you have the slightest regard for my
wishes,' said the girl, firmly, 'you will remain at
this bench for ten minutes after I have left. I do
not mean to accuse you, but you are probably
aware that autos generally bear the
monogram of their owner. Again, good-night.'
Swift and stately she moved away through the
dusk. The young man watched her graceful
form as she reached the pavement at the
park's edge, and turned up along it toward the
corner where stood the automobile. Then he
treacherously and unhesitatingly began to
slide along the park trees and bushes in a
course parallel to her route, keeping her well
in sight.
When she reached the corner she turned her
head to glance at the motor car, and then
passed it, continuing on across the street.
Sheltered behind a standing cab, the young
man followed her movements closely with his
eyes. Passing down the sidewalk of the street
opposite the park, she entered the restaurant
with the blazing sign. The place was one of
those glaring establishments, all white paint
and glass, where one may dine cheaply. The
girl entered the restaurant and went to some
place at the back, whence she quickly
returned. without her hat and veil.
The cashier's desk was well to the front. A
red-haired girl on the stool climbed down,
glancing pointedly at the clock as she did so.
-¿Cómo no está usted trabajando? -preguntó.
-Trabajo en el turno de noche -respondió el hombre
y no empiezo la jornada hasta dentro de una hora.
¿Puedo verla otro día?
-No lo sé. Acaso. Pero puedo no volver a sentir este
capricho. Esta noche tengo que ir a- una comida, y
a la ópera, y... Siempre lo mismo... Si se ha fijado
en un automóvil que espera en la esquina del
parque, con la carrocería blanca...
-¿Y ruedas rojas? -preguntó el joven, frunciendo.
meditativamente el entrecejo.
-Ése. Siempre vengo en él y dejo a Pierre
esperándome. Cree que he ido de compras a la
tienda de allí al lado. Estas cosas de la vida social
nos obligan a engañar hasta a los choferes. Buenas
noches.
-Es muy tarde ya -dijo Parkenstacker- y a esta, hora
hay muchos tipos dudosos en el parque. Si me
permite acompañarla...
La muchacha dijo firmemente: -Si tiene en la menor
consideración mis deseos, no se moverá de este
banco hasta diez minutos después de que yo me
haya ido. No quiero ofenderle, pero habrá visto que
los automóviles llevan generalmente el monograma
de sus propietarios. Buenas noches.
Y, rápida y majestuosa, desapareció en la
oscuridad. El joven contempló su graciosa silueta
hasta que la vio llegar a la acera exterior del
parque, dirigiéndose a la esquina donde estaba
parado, en efecto, el automóvil. Y entonces, sin
vacilar y traicionando lo que le pidieran, se deslizó
entre árboles y arbustos, siguiendo un camino
paralelo al de la muchacha.
Al llegar a la esquina ella se detuvo un instante,
miró el automóvil y continuó andand o. Oculto tras
un taxi el joven seguía todos los movimientos de su
desconocida amiga. La vio cruzar la calle, llegar a la
acera opuesta y penetrar en el restaurante cuyo
cartel le sirviera a él, poco antes, de punto de
referencia. El establecimiento, era, desde luego,
muy vistoso, con abundancia de. cristal y pintura
blanca, y ailí se podía comer ostentosamente y por
poco precio. La muchacha. atravesó una de las
puertas traseras del local y volvió a salir sin
sombrero ni velo.
El mostrador del cajero estaba muy cerca de la
entrada. Una moza pelirroja bajó de la especie de
estrado en que se hallaba la registradora. Miraba
atentamente el reloj. La muchacha vestida de gris
ocupó su lugar.
The girl in gray mounted in her place.
The young man pushed his hands into his
pockets and walked slowly back along the
sidewalk. At the corner his foot struck a small,
paper-covered volume lying there. By its
picturesque cover he recognised it as the
book the girl had been reading. He picked it
up carelessly, and saw that its title was New
Arabian Nights, the author being of the name
of Stevenson (*).
He dropped it again upon the grass, and
stood, hesitating, for a minute. Then he
stepped into the automobile, reclined upon the
cushions, and said two words to the chauffeur:
'Club, Henri.'

(*) New Arabian Nights is a collection of
short stories by the British writer Robert
Louis Stevenson (1850-1894). The principal
character in them is Prince Florizel of
Bohemia who goes in disguise amongst his
subjects and is involved in a series of
fantastic adventures. No doubt this book
gave the girl her idea of posing as a society
lady mixing with humble people.
El joven del parque hundió las manos en los
bolsillos y caminó lentamente por la acera. Junto a
la esquina su pie tropezó con un libro caído. Por su
llamativa cubierta lo reconoció como el libro que
había estado leyendo la muchacha. Lo levantó
despreocupadamente y observó que su título decía:
Nuevas Noches Arabes, por Stevenson (*).
Dejó caer el libro sobre la hierba y, durante unos
instantes, permaneció irresoluto. Luego entró en el
automóvil, se reclinó en los cojines y se dirigió al
conductor:
-Al club, Henri.

(*) Nuevas Noches Arabes es una colección de
cuentos cortos escritos por el autor inglés Robert
Louis Stevenson (1850-1894). El personaje
principal de los cuentos es el Príncipe Florizel de
Bohemia que se mueve disfrazado entre sus
súbditos y se involucra en una serie de aventuras
fantásticas. Sin duda este libro le dio a la
muchacha la idea de hacerse pasar por una dama
de la sociedad mezclada con gente humilde.
