Different uses of -ing

The suffix -ing has four different uses in English:

1) Continuous tenses:
Present continuous: I am walking
Past continuous: I was walking
Future continuous: I will be walking
Present perfect continuous: I have been walking
Past perfect continuous: I had been walking
Future perfect continuous: I will have been walking

2) The Present Continous form is also used to talk about the future:
I am going to the beach tomorrow.

3) As the noun form of a verb. It works as a word that describes an activity in itself. For the use as a
gerund, it is of no importance if the activity is in a state of progress or not.
Walking is good for your health.
Smoking is bad for your health.
Stop talking please, we are watching a movie.

4) Active adjective. In this case it describes a property of an object:


The movie was interesting.
It was a confusing explanation.

Exercises
1) On the following sentences, decide which of the -ing form(s) – C, F, N, A - are used:
a. Policeman Thorn is eating some Soylent Green, not knowing what it is made of.
b. The only winning move is not to play.
c. The old chicken is laying a colored egg every day.
d. Feeding Gremlins after midnight is never a good idea.
e. The sun is expected to be shining this Thursday.
f. Hardcore gamer Gordon Gamepad was driving to the city to buy the amazing new game that his friend
Jimmy Joystick had been talking about at work.

2) Make up one example sentence for each of the uses of the -ing form (continuous, future, noun, adjective).
