PROJECTILE MOTION

PROJECTILE MOTION
❖ Projectile motion is motion with a constant
horizontal velocity combined with a constant
vertical acceleration
❖ The projectile moves along a parabola
Examples of Projectile
Motion
• Launching a Cannon ball
Factors Affecting Projectile Motion

• What two factors would affect projectile motion?

• Angle
• Initial velocity

Initial Velocity

Angle
vi = 25 m/s
y

a =g=
- 9.81m/s2
• Acceleration is constant, and
downward
• a = g = -9.81m/s2
• The horizontal (x) component of
velocity is constant
• The horizontal and vertical
motions are independent of each
other, but they have a common
time

x
y

vi Initial position: x = 0, y = 0

Initial velocity: vi = vi [Θ]

Velocity components:
x- direction : vix = vi cos Θ
y- direction : viy = vi sin Θ

Equations of motion:

Uniform motion Accelerated motion
ACCELERATION ax = 0 ay = g = -9.81 m/s2

VELOCITY vx = vi cos Θ vy = vi sin Θ + g t

DISPLACEMENT x = vi t cos Θ y = vi t sin Θ + ½ g t2

The distance form the point of projection to the
point where the projectile strikes the horizontal
plane is called Horizontal Range
An object is fired from the ground at 100
meters per second at an angle of 30
degrees with the horizontal
✔Calculate the horizontal and vertical
components of the initial velocity
✔After 2.0 seconds, how far has the
object traveled in the horizontal
direction?
✔How high is the object at this point?
A long jumper leaves
the ground at an angle
of 30 degrees to the
horizontal and a speed
of 6m/s. How far does
he jump?
A bullet is fired at an angle of 30
degrees above the horizontal
with a velocity of 600m/s. Find
the :
a. range
b. time before it returns to the
same level
c. position and the velocity of the
bullet 40 seconds after its fired.
