I operating temperature

3
EXAMPLE 1: SKF 61868
Given:
SKF 61868
ROTATIONAL SPEED = 500 RPM

Operating temperature =70 °C

Required:
Determine the recommended oil
grade.

4
EXAMPLE 1: Solution
SKF 61868

SKF 61868
d=340 mm
D=420 mm

𝐷+𝑑
𝑑𝑚 = = 380mm
2
𝑛 = 500 𝑟𝑝𝑚

∴ Rated viscosity =14 cSt 5

EXAMPLE 1: Solution (continued)

Viscosity = 14 cSt
+
Operating temperature= 70 °C

∴Recommended oil viscosity grade = 46 cSt

k
𝜈
k=
𝜈1
𝜈 : Actual operating kinematic viscosity of the oil or (the grease base oil)
[mm2/s]

𝜈1: Rated viscosity which is calculated based on the mean diameter of

the bearing (dm) and the rotational speed (n).

Note Recommended values of k from 1 to 4

EXAMPLE 2: Selecting a suitable oil for the Bearings of
a centrifugal pump

11
EXAMPLE 2:
Centrifugal pump
rotational speed=3000 rpm
Bearings:
• SKF NU411 (non-locating)
Operating temperature=70°C

• SKF7312 (Locating)
Operating temperature=85°C

Lubricating oil grade: ISO VG 68

Required:
Determine the lubrication
A CENTRIFUGAL PUMP WITH ITS BEARING
conditions ARRANGEMENT
12
EXAMPLE 2: Solution
SKF NU411

SKF NU 411
d=55 mm
D=140 mm

𝐷+𝑑
𝑑𝑚 = = 97.5mm
2
𝑛 = 3000 𝑟𝑝𝑚

∴ Rated viscosity 𝜈₁ ≈ 9 cSt

13
EXAMPLE 2: Solution (continued)

ISO VG 68
+
Operating temperature= 70 °C

operating viscosity 𝜈 = 19 cSt

∴ lubrication condition
k=𝜈/𝜈₁=2.1
14
EXAMPLE 2: Solution (continued)
SKF 7312 BECBP

SKF 7312 BECBP

d=60 mm
D=130 mm

𝐷+𝑑
𝑑𝑚 = = 95mm
2
𝑛 = 3000 𝑟𝑝𝑚

∴ Rated viscosity 𝜈₁ ≈ 8.5 cSt 15

EXAMPLE 2: Solution (continued)

ISO VG 68
+
Operating temperature= 85 °C

operating viscosity 𝜈 = 12 cSt

∴ lubrication condition for the

locating bearing
k=𝜈/𝜈₁=1.4 16
EXCERCISE
Considering the centrifugal pump case study explained in
Example 2 and assuming that a lubricating oil of grade ISO VG
150 is the only available one, determine the lubrication
condition. Comment on your answer.

Example (Final 2021)

1. The cylindrical roller bearing shown in figure is utilized to support part of the radial load applied on
the shaft of a centrifugal pump. The shaft of the pump rotates at 2000
rpm and the operating temperature is 100 C.
(a) According to the size and rotational speed of the bearing, what is
the recommended lubrication system?
(b) If the bearing is lubricated by grease determine the approximate
grease amount in grams and the expected re-lubrication interval
in hours.
(c) If the bearing is lubricated by oil, what is the recommended oil ISO
VG grade?
(d) If a lubricating oil of 320 ISO VG is utilized, what will be the
lubrication condition (k)? and what is the lubrication mode at this
case?
(e) If an oil bath lubrication system is utilized, determine the
approximate oil change interval.
(f) If an oil jet lubrication system is utilized, determine the recommended number of nozzles.

• The surfaces change their deformation at the outlet !!??
• In spite of the extremely high pressure in the lubricant film, the lubricant is n’t squeezed out of the surfaces!!??
