ADHESIVES
(Physical Testing)
HEAT, HUMIDITY AND COLD AGING TEST FOR ADHESIVES
1.0 SCOPE
This procedure describes the method to be used to determine the effects of heat,
moisture, and cold on bonded or sealed assemblies, such as decorative
ornamentation, trim parts or sealed body joints.
2.0 EQUIPMENT AND MATERIALS
A. Mechanical circulating air oven - capable of maintaining
temperatures to 204°C (400°F).
B. Humidity cabinet, condensing type - operating at 98 to 100% relative
humidity and 37.2 to 38.4°C (99 to 101°F).
C. Cold cabinet - capable of maintaining temperatures down to -29°C
(-40°F).
D. Prepared test assemblies.
3.0 SUMMARY OF METHOD
This test procedure simulates heat, humidity and low temperature soaks as
expected in vehicle service and to determine the effects of these environments.
4.0 SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
This standard may involve hazardous materials, operations, and equipment. This
standard does not purport to address all the safety problems associated with its
use. It is the responsibility of whoever uses this standard to consult and
establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability
of regulatory limitations prior to use.
5.0 SAMPLING & CONDITIONING
Examine and/or test the specimens as prepared or received for color, adhesion and
appearance, as required in the material standard. Retain a duplicate specimen
to allow comparison of the part before and after aging.
Position the part in the expected vehicle position and simulate the mode of
attachment whenever possible.

A single asterisk "*" after the paragraph header denotes a technical change to the paragraph. A triple asterisk before and
after an item (*** text ***) identifies the specific changed text.

6.0 PROCEDURE
A. Place the specimen in the mechanical air circulating oven for 16
hours at the oven temperature specified in the Material Standard.
B. Remove the specimen from the oven, examine it and record any
changes.
Specimens should be checked very carefully after each period of the
cycle, as failure may occur at any time.
C. Place the specimen in the humidity cabinet for 24 hours.
D. Remove the specimen from the humidity cabinet, examine it and record
any changes.
E. Place the specimen in the cold cabinet for 8 hours at the
temperature specified in the Material Standard.
F. While the specimen is still in the cold cabinet, check cold
resistance by the appropriate method outlined in the specified
Chrysler Laboratory Procedure.
G. Remove the specimen from the cold cabinet, examine it and record any
changes.
H. Repeat steps A through G for the number of aging cycles specified in
the Material Standard.
I. After completion of aging, examine and / or test the specimen as
required in the Material Standard.
7.0 REPORT
Record the results as required in the Material Standard of the specimens before
and after aging. Report any warpage, shrinkage, change in hardness,
discoloration, cracking or loss of bond where applicable.
