Winter assignment – Physics

Grade 11
1. A body of mass 4 kg initially at rest is subject to a force 16N. What is the kinetic
energy acquired by the body at the end of 10 s?
2. If the radius of the Earth decreases by 10%, the mass remaining unchanged, what
will happen to the acceleration due to gravity?
3. The mass of moon is M/81 (where M is mass of earth). Find the distance of the point
where the gravitational field due to earth and moon cancel each other. Given
distance of moon from earth is 60 R, where R is radius of earth.
4. How far away from the surface of earth does the value of g is reduced to 4% of its
value on the surface of the earth Given radius of earth = 6400km
5. The distances of two planets from the sun are 1013 and 1012 respectively. Calculate
the ratio of time periods and speeds of the two planets.
6. What is the potential energy of a body of mass m relative to the surface of earth of
radius R, at a height h = R above its surface?
7. What is the minimum energy required to launch a satellite of mass m kg from the
earth’s surface of radius R in a circular orbit at an altitude of 2R?
8. What would be the duration of the day if Earth suddenly shrinks to 1/64 th of its
original volume, mass remaining uncharged. (I of earth = 2/5 mR2)?
9. The moment of inertia of a body about a given axis is 1.2 kg m2. Initially, the body is
at rest. In order to produce a rotational K.E. of 1500J, for how much duration, an
acceleration of 25 rads-2 must be applied about that axis.
10. A rod of weight W is supported by two parallel knife edges A and B and is in
equilibrium in a horizontal position. The knives are at a distance d from each other.
The C.M. of the rod is at a distance x from A. Find the normal reactions at knife
edges A and B.
11. A truck of mass 2000 kg has a velocity of 8 ms-1 when it starts from a point to
descend a slope 200 m long. The vertical height of the slope is 18 m and the truck
arrives at the bottom with a velocity of 20 ms-1. Calculate the resistance offered.
Take g = 10 ms-2.
