Periodic Table and Periodicity
The periodic table of elements we use today is shown below and is divided into Metals, Metalloids
and Non-metals generally but the metal and non-metal groups can be sub-divided further. The
metals are divided into Alkali metals (pink), alkaline earth metals (purple), transition metals (blue)
while the non-metals are made up of non-metals like Carbon, Nitrogen and Oxygen, halogens such
as chlorine, fluorine, bromine (yellow) and iodine and Noble gases such as Helium, Argon, Neon
(brown). The metalloids have properties of both metals and non-metals and are indicated by the
mustard green colour to the left of the yellow non-metals in the diagram below. The group numbers
are given above each of the respective column.
Groups
MS.K BHAGALOO CHEMISTRY
Groups are the vertical columns in the periodic table of element. There are 18 columns or groups
but only eight of them are labelled, using Roman Numerals I – VII and the last one is labelled 0
(zero).
The transition metals make up the other groups which were not given a Roman numeral to identify
the group and the ones from the above periodic table of elements are shown below.
Periods
These are the rows that run from left to right across the table. There are seven periods labelled in
Arabic numerals 1-7.

Worksheet 18
6) What can you say about the members of each group and the valence electrons in each group?
7) How many electrons are there in the outer shells of group 0 elements?
10) What are periods in the period table and how many are there?
11) Elements in the same period have the same ___________ of ____________ __________.
13) How many valence electrons do elements have moving from left to right across a period?
