Chapter 3 : Methodology

This chapter presents the Research Design, Research Environment, Research

Respondents, Data Gathering Procedure, Research Instruments, and Statistical of the Data

Research Design

The researchers use a descriptive research design to determine the internet use and its impact
on the academic performance of the selected Junior High School students. This descriptive
research aimed to investigate how helpful the internet is to the following aspects of learning
productivity: concentration level on tasks, answering homework, and compliance of outputs
among the selected Junior High School students of Catmon National High School. The
researchers utilized descriptive surveys using quantitative approaches to gather information
about the present condition of the study with the aid of surveys and questionnaires. The data
gathered from the students is used to determine the findings of the study. Lastly, the statistical
treatment used in the study is a percentage response rate since the researchers only want to
identify the impact of the Internet on the learning productivity of selected Junior High School
Students.

Research Environment

Catmon National High School is a secondary public school under the supervision
of the Department of Education located in Panalipan, Catmon, Cebu. The school
has a total population of 761 students, with a total of 500 junior high school
students and 261 Senior High School  students. The school offers a complete
Junior High School program from grades 7 to 10 and a senior high school
program. The Senior High School of the said school offers two specialized
tracks, which are the Academic Track  and the techno-vocational Livelihood
Track. The General Academic Strand (GAS) and the Techno-vocational Track (TVL)
offer a strand in Information and Communications Technology (ICT).

Research Respondents

The research respondents in this study are the selected students of Catmon National High
School who are Junior High School students, with a total of 500, which composes the entire
population of the Junior high School. The researchers decided to conduct a simple random
sampling in which 86 students were chosen as the respondents to the study. Shown below is
the formula that was used to calculate the total research respondents for the study.

Data Gathering Procedures

A simple random sampling was conducted of 80 respondents out of the total population of
500 selected Junior High School students at Catmon National High School. Approval to
distribute the questionnaires to conduct the study was secured from the school principal. The
survey was distributed through a survey questionnaire. Afterwards, the data was collected and
tallied for interpretation.

Research Instrument

For this study, a self-administered questionnaire which was used to collect the
respondent’s feedback. This questionnaire aims to determine the helpfulness of internet use to
students learning productivity. Table 1 displays the specification grid of 25 - item rating/scale
questionnaires for the respondents to answer regarding the helpfulness of internet use and its
impact to the learning productivity of selected Junior High School students.

Section I covers the demographic data of the respondents; such as name, age ,gender ,
and section. Section II has 25 items that focuses on the helpfulness of internet use to the
learning productivity, where in they would rate each item on a scale of 1 to 5, with (1) as
“ strongly disagree" and ( 5 ) as “ strongly agree “.

Statistical Treatment of Data

After gathering the attained copies of the questionnaire, the researchers recorded the
answer of the individual respondent and tallied the results, then the data were treated according
to the researcher questionnaire and discussed briefly.
