Assembly is the process of combining individual components into a finished
product during manufacturing. An assembly may also refer to a single-level bill of
material (BOM), a multilevel BOM, or a top-level BOM. Assemblies may be comprised of
mechanical, electrical, or software components. An assembly worker is an employee
who is assigned to an assembly line in a manufacturing firm to fabricate parts and
join them to construct a final product. Assembly workers follow instructions and
diagrams to complete a particular task.

Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) deals with all aspects of health and safety
in the workplace and has a strong focus on primary prevention of hazards. Its
goal is to prevent accidents and harm to people from work-related activities.

Basic Safety Rules

The Basics of Safety

Through several years of investigating accidents and research in the field of accident
reconstruction, leaders in the field of occupational accident prevention have concluded that
there are specific reasons why accidents occur. They found that worker safety is
dependent on worker behavior and human factors. They developed ten safety rules and,
while many of you may have heard them before, they are worth repeating:

 STAY ALERT - and stay alive. The more awake a worker is, the less likely he or she is to
get hurt. If you are unsure how to operate equipment or perform a task, ask your
supervisor. Don't guess and muddle through. Make sure you know in advance the correct,
safe way to do it.

 WEAR THE RIGHT CLOTHES - work clothes should fit properly. Anything that can catch
in machinery or trip you up is hazardous. Wear protective clothing and equipment as
required.

 USE THE RIGHT TOOLS - if you need a hammer, get a hammer. It may be handier to use
a pair of pliers, wrench or screw driver, but you are more likely to get injured.

 LEARN HOW TO LIFT - Lifting takes more than muscle; it is an art. Don't try to show how
strong you are; you may end up in a hospital. Get help to handle anything that is too heavy
or cumbersome for you.

 DON'T BE A PRANKSTER - practical jokes and horseplay can be dangerous, especially

around heavy machinery. If you feel the urge to play, resist it until after work.

 BE TIDY - Good housekeeping reduces hazards in the workplace or your home. Always
put away tools when they are not in use. Keep the floors clean, pick up scraps and wipe up
spills. A slip or trip can be fatal.

 REPORTING IS IMPORTANT - Never fail to report accidents, defective equipment and or

unsafe conditions.

 GET FIRST AID IMMEDIATELY - if you're hurt - even if it seems minor. Neglect of an
injury may lead to serious infection, weeks of lost time, and possibly permanent injury.

 BACK YOUR SAFETY PROGRAM - If you have an idea you believe will reduce
accidents, tell your supervisor about it. Set an example by obeying safety rules. Cooperate
with your safety committee.

5 Simple

Steps in the

Electronic

Assembly

Process
Electronic
assembly is the process of
taking a PBC or printed
circuit board and
turning it into a PCBA
or a printed circuit board
assembly. This is done by connecting electrical components onto the circuit board. There are
many small circuits that connect electricity in different intensities and different frequencies
from point A to point B.  After the electronic assembly process, printed circuit board
assemblies are used in many different There are 5 main steps in the electronic assembly
process.

Step 1: Printed Circuit Board
 In electronic assembly, you start with a printed circuit board and the
components that go on it. The printed circuit board is a small board that
looks something like this picture below.

Step 2: Add Solder Paste

 After you have your printed circuit board paste is applied to it using a screen-
printer. A thin stencil is used so the paste only goes on the board in places where
it is needed.

Step 3: Pick-and-Place
 Next, the components are placed on the circuit board. This is done by a
machine called a Pick-and-Place that does exactly that, it picks them up and
places them where they are supposed to be on the circuit board. Whatever
the machine can’t do is done by hand by a technician.

Step 4:

Inspection
 After the components have been placed on the circuit board, it goes through an
automated optical inspection process where it’s confirmed that everything is
where it’s supposed to be, that it’s oriented correctly and that nothing is missing.

Step 5: Soldering
 The step in the electronic assembly process is to put the PCBA in the oven. The
oven melts the paste, which is made up of microbeads of metal. When the paste
heats up in temperature, the metal melts and becomes one solid piece of
connection. This connects components to the PCB.

After Printed Circuit Board Assembly

 After the printed circuit board assembly process is completed and the
components have been placed and soldered, the printed circuit board becomes

There are five coordination skills, in particular, that make it easier to be an effective
worker:

 Time management

 Time management is the process of planning and exercising conscious control of

time spent on specific activities, especially to increase effectiveness, efficiency,

and productivity.

Here is a list of the most important time management skills:

 Prioritizing.
 Delegation.
 Decision-making.
 Goal setting.
 Multitasking.

 Strategic thinking.
 Scheduling.

 Communication

 The findings and analysis above suggests that global communication promotes
coordination in large part because messages, in aggregate, convey significantly
more information. Somewhat surprisingly, information overload does not appear
to be an issue at the scale of our experiments.

 Adaptability

 Being willing to adjust your plans in response to shifting strategic company

priorities, new roles and responsibilities, new systems and technologies, process
improvements and policy changes.

accordance with established procedures.

Learning Objectives:
After reading this INFORMATION SHEET, YOU MUST be able to:
a. Understand the importance of procedures
b. Prepare and check accordance with the established procedures

Allotted Time: 1 hour

Introduction

A procedure is a set of instructions that perform a specific task or tasks. It may also
be called a function. A recipe for banana bread is an example of a procedure. The baker
must follow the instructions step-by-step to produce the bread. Standard operating
procedures (SOP) provide guidelines for your frontline team members to complete a
given process. SOPs are often used to ensure that operations run smoothly: with
cohesion, performance uniformity, and in compliance with safety measures and
regulations. Together, policies and procedures provide a roadmap for day-to-day
operations. They ensure compliance with laws and regulations, give guidance for
decision-making, and streamline internal processes.
