Members:

• Luis Gustavo Meneses Medel. (moderator)

• Alba Moreno Morales. (in favor)
• Hugo Cesar Juárez Ramírez (against)

Luis: Students and the teacher who accompany us are welcome to this discussion. Today
in this discussion we will talk about a gap year.

To start off let's talk about, what is a gap year? We will explain below.

A gap year is when people put aside their usual academic or work obligations to dedicate
themselves completely to other activities or to rest. There is no rule about what to do
during a gap year.

Simply put, the sabbatical year is designed for a period of one year, but it is adjustable and
can vary, depending on the time the person needs, so it can have a suitable term of between
two months and one year. Usually six months is the standard length of time for a gap year.

Please welcome the first speaker, her name is Alba Moreno Morales who will tell us why
she is in favor of taking a gap year.

In the same way, we welcome the speaker Hugo Cesar Juarez Ramirez, who will tell us the
reasons why he is against taking a gap year.

The discussion will work as follows:

✓ As a moderator, I will carefully choose the participant who is going to give an

opinion. if any of you want to take a gap year.
✓ If you want to respond to a response from a participant, you just have to ask for
permission to speak.
✓ Last point, you are going to answer the following question: When is the best time
to take a gap year?
Luis: So we'll start, as a question: Are you for or against taking a gap year? justify your
answer. Alba start your please.

Alba: It is a pleasure to be in this discussion, I am in favor of the fact that some young
people, after that exhausting and long period of interrupted learning, want to have a
gap year that allows them to rest, travel and do other activities.

In my opinion, I believe that young people choose to take time or rest, before studying
or knowing what they are good at, you may have talent for many things but you still
haven't realized it.some of us already know what we are good at, but over time we can
improve, so it is recommended to take a break to analyze what you like and if you want
to go for it.

I think that this time can be used to obtain information about a career of interest to
you, I also believe that taking a gap year has many benefits for your life in the future. The
American Gap Association found that 98% of students believed their gap year helped
them grow as people. And 73% said that year off helped them better prepare for
college.

Luis: Very good participation by our first speaker, now let's listen to our next
participant. Hugo, it is your moment to intervene , and I ask you the same question that
I asked Alba : Are you for or against taking a gap year, and why?

Hugo: It is a pleasure to be here with you today in this discussion, in which we have a
lot to say, and there are quite interesting opinions. If you ask me, I'm against taking a
gap year because Some young people start working in this period of time, then they
forget about wanting to study, and therefore they are no longer passionate about what
they used to like.

otherwise they lose sight of their objective. Another disadvantage of a social nature is
that concerning the world of work. When you take a gap year, it's clear that you win
but you also lose. On many occasions you will find yourself in the situation of having a
stable job and a good life, but as they say: "he who does not risk does not win". While
you travel it is true that you are losing job opportunities, training, etc.

Young people will easily lose interest in taking a break, they will just be wasting time.
Preparing to take a gap year involves a lot of costs and a lot of time in advance to plan
when, how long, where, with whom and what you are going to go.It is an experience
that is not for everyone, or at least it is more difficult for some than others.

Luis Thank you for your valuable opinion, for a moment I saw that Alba raised her hand. Do
you have something to say ?

Alba: That's not true at all, i belive that for every decision in life, it is important to take time
to ponder the options, either study immediately or take time to consider it, it will always be
best to spend time reflecting.

Luis: and finally, Hugo, do you have something to add?

Hugo: I think that we should not waste time on distractions that can bring us consequences,
such as not meeting our goals, we must focus on what we really want.

Luis: Well, in conclusion I can say that this topic was of great interest, there were many
advantages and disadvantages.

Taking a gap year is a great option for those who aren't sure which path to choose. Studying
is a very important part of life and taking a break and reflecting on where we want to go is
a way to decide calmly.

So this debate is over, thank you for the participation of each speaker, and the general
public for listening, it was a pleasure to be here with you today, thank you.

Alba: Thank you also for inviting us to this discussion.

Hugo: Thank you for inviting me to this interesting discussion and for being with you today.

Luis: That's it, thank you all again.
