Community and Public Health for Medical Laboratory Science

I. Using the Internet, identify 15 health-related organizations that service your community.
Divide your list by the three major types of health organizations noted in Chapter 2.
❖ Governmental Organization
a. Department of Health (DOH)
Is the country’s principal health agency that is involved in addressing health problems
experienced by the public and to ensure that every Filipinos have an access to basic health
necessities and services through quality health care. This agency are the ones that formulate
national health plans to treat common diseases that might cause an outbreak like dengue and
measles. They also collect, analyze, and disseminate relevant data for the public especially during
this pandemic.
b. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
FDA is a government agency that ensures the safety, legitimacy, efficacy, and quality of
food, drugs, cosmetics, vaccines, pesticides, toys, etc. that might affect the health of the
consumer if not accepted to quality control/standard given by the health professionals.
c. Philippine Health. Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth)
A national health insurance program that cater the needs of every Filipino by providing
affordable, acceptable, and available health services when it comes to accessing a quality
healthcare.
d. Philippine Institute of Traditional and Alternative Health Care (PITAHC)
Due to the modernization, the development of drugs and pills as medicine boomed to the
public since it’s easy to acquire and has proper description and direction before consuming. Little
did we know that there’s an alternative way of treating diseases in much cheaper way. PITACH
aims to advocate the usage of traditional and alternative healthcare during this modern time by
the usage of natural resources, acupuncture, chiropractic, hilot, etc.
e. Commission on Population and Development (POPCOM)
Due to the increasing records of population that affects our country, the POPCOM aims
to guide the youth and adulthood about the importance of responsible parenthood and family
planning as management long term plan to control the sudden incidence of unwanted or teenage
pregnancy. They also pursuit to strengthen population-related programs that affects
socioeconomic development.
f. Dangerous Drugs Boards (DDB)
DDB is a policy-making and coordinating agency that aims to control the usage of
dangerous drugs to establish a drug-free community. They also target to treat and put into
rehabilitation center the drug abusers to erase drug addiction to their system that ensures that
they will not use a certain drug anymore. Preventive actions are also implemented by
disseminating information related to the threat of using illegal drugs.
g. National Kidney and Transplant Institute (NKTI)
Is a government owned agency that is specialize in prevention, diagnosis, rehabilitation,
and treatment of any kidney related diseases by the use of dialysis and transplant.
❖ Non-Governmental Organization
a. Philippine Red Cross (PRC)
A non-government association that is committed in providing a quality life-saving
services, health promotions, and trainings that is a great contribution to protect the Filipinos in
need during vulnerable situations.
b. Nutrition Center of the Philippines (NCP)
is an organization that battles malnutrition in the Philippines for the past decades by
developing and implementing policy-shaping nutrition interventions.
c. Health Futures Foundation, Inc. Philippines (HFI)
A non-government association that envisions Filipino to have an access and acquire a
quality healthcare that they need. HFI is involved to empower local governments and
marginalized community in achieving a quality health development by formulating a community
of wellness.
d. Volunteer Youth Leaders for Health – Philippines
VYLH-Philippines is a network of proactive, service-oriented, empowering, and visionary
leaders who are equipped with the knowledge and skills to mobilize youth toward a healthier
Philippines. They aim to educate and raise awareness about the significance of folic acid
supplementation in the prevention of birth defects, saving babies from mental retardation, and
the needs and rights of patients with rare or orphan disorders
e. Health Action Information Network
This non-governmental agency aims to promote the importance of research field in the
Philippines since they are established to serve the information and research needs of the
community based on the implemented health programs.
f. Lions Club Philippines
According to their tag line “We Serve”, Lions club empowers volunteerism to improve
health and well-being, to strengthen the community, and support those who are in need. I myself
witness how lions serve Filipinos during the Taal eruption and the surge of Covid-19. Indeed, they
prioritize the health and welfare of Filipinos in need.
g. Center for Health Solutions and Innovations, Inc. Philippines
this organization is involved with other public health sector, education, communication,
and finance experts to look and analyze for arising problems to be addressed and used it as
opportunity to make a difference to Filipino community.
Quasi- Governmental Organization
a. World Food Program Philippines (WFP)
WFP encourages self-sufficiency in communities affected by war and natural disasters
caused by climate change by providing food and cash support. People are provided with food or
money in exchange for participating in livelihood activities and vocational skill training in order
to improve their livelihood possibilities and enhance their resilience to man-made or natural
disasters.
