PART-A (5 X 2 = 10) - ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS
Ans. No. Contents of the Answer * Allocation of Marks

1. The AC transmission system is used for short distance transmission. The DC transmission is used for 2
transmission of electric power for long distances. The AC transmission lines interfere the nearby communication
lines. The DC transmission lines do not interfere the communication lines.

2. The main advantage of HVDC is that it solves the problem of reactive power consumption for line
charging, which occurs particularly on cable lines HVAC
2

3. Monopolar Links. Bipolar links, Back to Back , Homopolar 2

4. Applications of HVDC technologies include water crossings, asynchronous interconnections (back-to- back),
bulk power transfers including access to remote renewable (point-to-point), transmission in areas with severely 2
restricted ROWs, and HVDC networked grids (multi-terminal).

5. HVDC Bipolar Links There are currently five operational HVDC links in India namely Rihand-Dadri,
2
Ballia-Bhiwadi, Chandrapur-Padge, Talcher-Kolar and Mundra- Mohindergarh

PART-B (2*5= 10) - ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS

Ans. No. Contents of the Answer * Allocation of Marks
5. Components of HVDC Transmission Systems
1. Converters, Smoothing reactors, Filters, Reactive power supplies, Electrodes , DC lines , AC circuit breakers 2

6. MODERN TRENDS IN DC TRANSMISSION

The continuing technological developments in the areas of power semiconductor devices, digital electronics,
adaptive control, DC protection equipment have increased the pace of application of DC transmission.
The major contribution of these developments is to reduce the cost of converter stations while improving the
reliability and performance.
Power Semiconductor and valves, Converter Control, DC Breakers, Conversion of existing AC lines, Operation
with weak AC system, Active DC filter, Capacitor Commutated Converter (CCC), UHV DC Transmission. 2.5

PLANNING FOR HVDC TRANSMISSION

The system planner should consider for perfect HVDC transmission,
Some of the factors should be consider: Cost, Technical Performance, Reliability, Consideration in the planning
for DC depends on the applications, Long Distance Bulk Power Transmission, • Interconnection between two 2.5
adjacent systems.
