Phonetics is one of the areas of the language that tends to be ignored when

learning because other aspects such as vocabulary or grammar are prioritized.

Phonics plays a very important role in this process.

The English phonetic alphabet, also known as the International Phonetic

Alphabet (IPA), is a set of symbols used to represent the sounds of speech. The

English alphabetic alphabet is the same as the Latin alphabet used in many other

languages, and consists of 26 letters:

A B C D E F G H I J K L M N O P Q R S T U V W X Y Z.

Each letter represents a specific sound, although in English there are more

sounds than letters. That is why the AFI is used to transcribe the specific sounds of

English speech.

The International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) in English consists of 44

phonetic symbols. Some of these symbols are similar to the letters of the Latin

alphabet, while others are special symbols that represent specific sounds. Here is a

list of the English AFI phonetic symbols:


Consonants:

p, b, t, d, k, g (occlusive consonants).

f, v, θ, ð, s, z, ʃ, ʒ, h (fricative consonants)

m, n, ŋ (nasal consonants)

l, r (liquid consonants)

j, w (semivowel consonants).

Vowels:

i, ɪ, e, æ, ɑ, ʌ, ɔ, o, u, ʊ (short vowels).

ɜ, ə, ɐ (neutral vowels).

aɪ, aʊ, eɪ, ɔɪ (diphthongs).

Each phonetic symbol represents a specific sound. For example, the letter "t"

represents the "t" sound in the word "time", while the phonetic symbol "θ"

represents the "th" sound in the word "think". The AFI is used by linguists,

English teachers, and other language specialists to transcribe and describe specific

English speech sounds.
