Abstract

This study explores the impact of the Korean Wave on the lifestyle of senior high school

learners. It focuses on Capitan Bayong National High School (CBNHS), examining the influence of

Korean popular culture on students’ behaviors, attitudes, and preferences. The study aims to provide

insights into the dynamics of identity formation and meaning-making in the context of Filipino youth.

Using a cross-sectional survey design, a sample of senior high school students from different academic

strands at CBNHS was selected. A modified questionnaire was used as the research instrument to gather

data on students’ perceptions, behaviors, and understanding of the Korean Wave. The collected data

were analyzed and we’re given an interpretation.

The findings reveal a significant impact of the Korean Wave on the lifestyle of senior high school

learners at CBNHS. Participants demonstrated a strong affinity towards Korean popular culture,

spending considerable time engaging with Korean dramas, K-pop music, and following Korean

celebrities. They exhibited a deep understanding of Korean culture, indicating the pervasive influence

of the Korean Wave on their preferences in music, fashion, and entertainment. These findings

underscore the need to raise awareness among learners, parents, and educators about the potential

effects of excessive exposure to Korean popular culture. The study contributes to the existing body of

knowledge on the Korean Wave’s influence on Filipino youth and provides a basis for further research

in understanding the intricate relationship between popular culture, identity, and lifestyle choices.

In conclusion, the study highlights the significant impact of the Korean Wave on the lifestyle of

senior high school learners, emphasizing the role of Korean popular culture in shaping their attitudes,

behaviors, and preferences. Understanding these influences can help inform educational and cultural

policies to promote a balanced engagement with popular culture among Filipino youth.
Chapter I

THE PROBLEM

Background of the Study

Culture is the result of human thinking that do consciously in life group. Human thinking that

occurs intentionally in a life group produces culture. The elements of human potential for the culture

are the mind (ideas) feelings and wishes (intention) present in the culture. According to Sir Edward

Tylor say that culture is all something that learn together socially by society member.

Culture is a dynamic hallmark of cultures that consistently changes over time. Since ancient

times, cultural changes have been made to the chasing and gathering system of life, which have made

cultivation substantially more accelerated. The proximity of touch with another culture is one of the

numerous factors that contribute to culture transformation.

Before the Korean wave, or Hallyu, became popular in the Philippines, the country had a strong

tradition of its own music, dance, and fashion. The Philippines has a diverse cultural heritage, influenced

by its indigenous peoples as well as by Spanish, American, and Asian cultures. Traditional music and

dance, such as the tinikling and the kundiman, were an important part of Filipino cultur There are

over 170 languages spoken in the Philippines, with Tagalog and English being the most widely spoken.

The national language is Filipino, which is based on Tagalog.

In terms of fashion, traditional clothing, such as the barong Tagalog for men and the baro’t saya

for women, is made of lightweight materials such as pineapple or banana fibers. These traditional

clothing is still worn on formal occasions and events, but it is not commonly worn in daily life was

worn on formal occasions and events. However, these traditional clothes were not commonly worn in

daily life After the Korean wave became popular in the Philippines, it greatly influenced the country’s

entertainment industry, particularly music and television dramas. Many Filipino people became fans of

K-Pop music and Korean dramas. The popularity of these genres also led to a rise in the number of
Korean language learners in the Philippines. Additionally, the fashion trend in Philippines has been

heavily influenced by South Korean style, with many young Filipinos adopting the K-Pop look

The Korean Wave refers to the global increase in interest in Korean culture. The Korean wave

is caused by the popularity of Korean popular culture, which is primarily spread through the media,

outside of Korea (Yu, 2008). The Korean Wave is primarily comprised of television dramas, movies,

pop music, movie stars, animation, and comics. It has also aggressively expanded to include dance,

sculpture, painting, cuisine, plastic surgery, tourism, and language. Other elements include mobile

content like cell phones and iPods, as well as video and computer games, as well as the newest trends

in clothing, food, home appliances, and cosmetics. The impact of the Korean Wave on senior high

school students’ preferences for music, TV dramas, and their essential forms of fashion, language, and

cuisine is the focus of this investigation.

Adolescents are the person who is most affected by the Korean Wave and one of those is the

Filipino Youth (Lee, 2011). The new age today is extraordinary and they are effectively caught to the

things around them. These young people are presented to be the various types and classes of music, TV

shows, and in their essence of mold. Once in a while, the essence of music, motion pictures, and form

has been changed, enhanced, and made all the more energizing according to the Filipino Youth.

Wherever you will go, in schools, shipping centers, stores, while riding a jeepney, and even to

recreational places, you can see the impacts of the Korean Wave on the Filipinos particularly the

Filipino Youth In going to class you can without much of stretch see that Korean Sensations are all over

around. You can see that understudies are tuning in and singing melodies in various dialects (Korean

Language) that they don’t have the foggiest idea about what’s the significance of it, they discuss their

most love Korean shows and performing artists in the film and some of the time mimic their looks (Lee,

2011).

Lifestyle is a pattern of life in the world that is expressed in activities, interests, and opinions.

Because Lifestyle is different from the way of life, the Way of life is shown by characteristics, such as

norms, rituals, and patterns of social order or manner of speech in typical. Meanwhile, the Lifestyle is
expressed through what is subject to a person what he/she consumes, and how he/she acted or behaves

when in the presence of others (Diana, 2016)

Research highlights the impact of the Korean Wave to senior high school learners. People who

like Korean Drama and Korean Pop Music get addicted so much that they change their lifestyle to be

more incorporated into their Korean artists/K-Pop Idols. We are wondering what are the effects of

getting addicted to the Korean Wave on senior high school learners of Capitan Bayong National High

School. This research aims to investigate the experiences of Korean fans, and how they express

themselves as avid fan.

Framework of the Study.

The Figure 1. Illustrates the dimensions of Korean Implications which are Korean Pop Music,

Korean Drama, and Korean Artists, and their relation to the learner’s lifestyle. The researcher uses 3

independent variables dependent variable. Korean Pop Music, Korean Drama, and Korean artists act as

the independent variable, influencing the Learner’s lifestyle as the dependent variable.
This study is anchored by the Popular Culture Theory of John Storey (2015). Taking Raymond

William’s interpretation of Pop Culture in this book, Pop Culture has four meanings: “anything that is

well-liked by many people,” “poor sorts of work,” “work actively set out to earn favor with the people,”

and “culture that is truly developed by people for themselves.” Pop culture is defined as “a culture that

is widely favored or well-liked by a large number of individuals.” (Storey, 2015)

Goffman (1959) used theatre as an analogy to explain the social interaction which is known as

dramaturgy. According to him, the world is a stage and humans are actors. An individual carries a

variety of roles that are interpreted as the set behaviors and actions based on one’s setting and audience

to convey the desired impression. This phenomenon is what Goffman called impression management.

In the context of Korean fans, an individual performs the identity as a fan in an attempt to form an

impression of who and what kind of person he or she is. This can be seen in various performativity such

as from the way the fan speaks, fan socializes, fan’s purchase intention and behaviors, and the way fan

dresses. These are learned from the distinct set of values and practices that are only understood by

Korean Fandom.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to explore the Impacts of the Korean Wave on the Lifestyle of senior high

school learners, the findings gathered from this study will contribute to the existing. This research also

provides an important opportunity to advance the understanding of the dynamics of identity and

meaning in the society

Specifically, this study aims to seek the following question:

1. What are the learners’ perceptions towards Korean Wave in terms knowing and spending time with

it.

2. What are the influences of Korean Dramas, Korean Pop Music, and Korean Artist/Idols on Learners

lifestyle?
3. How deep does the learner’s understanding towards Korean drama, songs, and celebrities/idols?

Hypothesis.

1. The Korean wave has a significant impact on the lifestyle of senior high school students.

2. The Korean wave has a negative impact on the lifestyle of senior high school students.

Significance of the Study

The result of this study will benefit to following that directly engage in psychological session.

Teenager. This will help them to be more aware of their behavior.

Parents. They will have an awareness of how they will guide their children in developing behavior that

they are influenced by Korean culture.

Future researchers. The researchers will be able to find this study a great help for them if they will be

seeking related studies about their research engaging to the effects of Korean idols on the behavior

among youth.

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

This research focused on the impact of the Korean Wave on the lifestyle of senior high school

learners. Also, this study focuses only on Korean Wave and the respondents are senior high school

learners with specific gender and age. This research uses only an informal survey. The maximum

number of respondents is ten people only students around Capitan Bayong National High School.

Definitions of Terms

For a better understanding of the study the following terms are defined theoretically and operationally:
Korean Wave-the rise in international interest in South Korea and its popular culture.

The lifestyle-the way in which a person or group lives.

Chapter II

REVIEW OF LITRETURE.

This research will adopt the study of Shasta Amor A. Salceda (2019), about the “Effects of

Korean Popular music on the lifestyle of PSALMS junior high school students”. She asserts that many

trends had come and gone in the Philippines in recent years. Despite the cultural division between the

Philippines and South Korea. It began with Korean dramas being broadcast on local televisions, with

the original Korean language being dubbed into the local Filipino language. It’s strange how popular it

became despite the cultural division between Filipinos and Koreans. There is a great difference in the

way of life of the Koreans themselves, from mannerisms, values, fashion style, ideal beauty, and even

the food they consume, because the difference does not simply exist in language. K-pop music is

popular among young people aged 5 to 20. At this age, toddlers and teenagers are more likely to learn

anything they see in their idols.

In relation to Emma Rundle (2020) in her article the “Impact of K-Pop Music on Academic

Performance” Most students believe that the music they enjoy has little bearing on their personal style.

They dress in outfits that are influenced by popular South Korean fashion. They also get ideas for hair

and makeup. This should be considered merely another passing fad. Hip-hop used to be a huge

obsession among youngsters, but that isn’t the case now. Korean idols’ impact does not end with

fashion. It has an impact on the lives of its viewers in a variety of ways, from their personal styles to

their behavior and much more. It is not something that only affects us for a short time because it can be

extended as it has become a part of our lives.

Moreover, the study of Md. Ashrafuzzamn Refath (2020) in his article entitled “Is K-Pop a Bad

Influence” According to him, even though K-pop appears to be harmless, it adds to a number of health

issues. People who spend too much time viewing music videos and looking up information on their

idols are more likely to develop asthenia as a result of lack of sleep and skipping meals. Some k-pop

enthusiasts are riveted to their computer or television screens, exposing their eyes to harmful radiation.
It can also be harsh on the ears; if you listen to loud music without pausing, the eardrum may be

damaged, resulting in partial deafness. Apart from that, it may lead to a larger proclivity for hazardous

behavior among their friends who are not fans of K-pop; this stage marks the beginning of the behavioral

shift. Heavy K-pop addiction not only harms a person’s emotional and physical health, but it also has a

negative impact on their academic achievement. K-pop junkies are unable to concentrate on their

studies; instead, their minds are constantly drawn to K-Pop, to the point that they may overlook key

aspects of their lives. They are unable to concentrate on the lectures since their minds are preoccupied

with K-Pop topics. To put it another way, they are no longer interested in studying, resulting in low

academic achievement. The impact of K-Pop on a student’s academic achievement is enormous.

Globalization of Korean Industry.

According to Sue Jin Lee (2011) “The Korean Wave: The Seoul of Asia” Korean popular

culture has spread like a virus over the world in the last decade. This expanding popularity of Korean

popular culture is referred regarded as the “Korean wave.” The Korean wave created a ripple effect in

the media around the world. The Korean government capitalized on this national phenomenon by

assisting Korean media companies in exporting Korean pop culture. This global expansion has helped

to improve South Korea’s national image and economy, as well as serving as a public diplomacy

instrument.

Woongjae Ryoo, (2009) “Globalization, or the logic of cultural hybridization: The case of the

Korean wave” The Korean wave is an indicator of new global as well as local cultural and economic

transformations. This phenomenon represents a regionalization of transnational cultural flows because

it involves Asian countries’ growing acceptance of cultural production and consumption from

neighboring countries with similar historical and cultural backgrounds, rather than from politically and

economically powerful others. The article goes on to say that the Korean wave is an example of how a

‘in-between’ (or sub-periphery) country may carve out a niche and reposition itself as a cultural

mediator in the middle of global cultural change.

Hyun-key Kim Hogarth (2013), “The Korean wave: An Asian reaction to western-dominated

globalization” Globalization can also be seen in contemporary Korean films, TV dramas, and pop

music. The celebrities imitate their Western counterparts in terms of performance, presentation, and

attire. Lyrics in English are frequently utilized in music. The main difference is that the actors have

distinct Asian physical characteristics, and the dramas represent traditional Asian values and ethos,

making Asian viewers feel at ease. “Asian-ness” is no longer a strange or peripheral concept, but rather

takes center stage. As a result, the Korean Wave can be seen as a reaction by Asians to the West-

dominated globalization of popular culture.

Athikho Kaisii (2017) “Globalization, hybridization and cultural invasion: Korean wave in

India’s North East” Globalization has resulted in cultural universalization, yet cultural hybridization is

also taking place. Korean wave, or Hallyu, is a blend of Korean tradition and western culture that is an

offspring of cultural hybridization. In play and film, the capacity to adapt Korean society into modern

without abruptly separating from tradition is evident. Cultural invasion in the shape of the Korean wave,

which is emerging as an alternative form of modernism in India’s North East, is a difficult task. Cultural

invasion in the shape of Korean movies, dramas, style, and fashion is slowly but surely creating

enormous interest and enthusiasm in India’s North East, particularly among the youth. The process of

Koreanization can be defined as the rising affiliation with the Korean wave. The audience was

particularly interested in the attribute of cultural heritage resemblance and proximity. Because the

inhabitants of the North East are culturally unique from mainland Indians, it is difficult for them to

establish a sense of commitment to mainland Indian entertainment and popular culture, which is not the

case with Korean wave. Furthermore, the quality of actors’ appearances and beauty, as well as features

such as fashion and style, realism and sensibleness, and flow consistency, all contribute to the wave’s

promotion, which neither the state nor the locals reject.

Xiaowei Huang (2009) “Korean wave, the popular culture, comes as both cultural and

economic imperialism in the East Asia” Korean popular culture, which includes movies, TV dramas,

and pop music, is extremely powerful, with TV dramas being one of the most notable examples. They

are not only popular in terms of fanaticism among spectators and supporters, but they also generate
significant revenue for the country. Economic imperialism is being replaced by cultural imperialism.

Certain East Asian countries, such as China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Japan, and the

Philippines, experience a varying level of Korean fever as a result of the Korean wave.

Ju-Yeon Kim, Kyung-Mo Ahn (2012) “Impact of K-pop on Positive Feeling Toward’s Korea,

Consumption Behavior and 1Intention to Visit from other Asian Countries” K-pop has grown in

popularity all around the world, but it is particularly popular in Asian countries. Since 2005, the Korean

wave, which began with Korean dramas, has evolved to include K-pop, which revolves around idol

singers. Fans imitate performers’ dance moves, makeup, and appearance, and even try to learn Korean,

demonstrating the popularity of K-pop.

Ingyu Oh, Gil-Sung Park (2013) “The globalization of K-pop: Korea’s place in the global music

industry”. Many music fans, commentators, and business professionals in Asia were taken aback by the

rise of K-pop, or Korean popular music, in the worldwide music scene. Prior to the unexpected K-pop

craze, the Anglo-American or European dominance of the worldwide music business has rarely faced

competition from Asia. Psy’s “Gangnam Style,” for example, is the most popular YouTube video in the

world, with more than 1.7 billion views as of July 21, 2013. Justin Bieber has 0.9 billion YouTube hits,

which is the second highest total ever. Other Korean boy and girl bands entranced a large number of

young Asian and European fans who flocked to swiftly sold-out live shows and/or YouTube for instant

and free access to music videos prior to Psy’s global pop stardom. Young fans in countries like China,

where YouTube is blocked, turned to alternative social networking service (SNS) sites for free Korean

music videos. Girls’ Generation, Wonder Girls, TVXQ, Big Bang, 2PM, 2NE1, and Rain are among

the many young Korean artists who today rule the Asian music industry (see, for example, Ho, 2012;

Lee, 2012; Lie, 2012; Oh and Park, 2012; Hübinette, 2012; Hirata, Forthcoming; Iwabuchi,

Forthcoming).

Katherine Kim ‘22(2019) in her article “The growing international influences of K-pop”

discussed that, there seemed to be no escape Korean culture these days. However, K-pop, a South

Korean pop music industry, is likely to attract the most attention. K-pop musicians, sometimes known
as “idols,” are one of the many reasons why the genre is so popular around the world. A K-pop idol

may appear similar to Western pop idols at first glance. K-pop idols are musical artists with devoted

fan following, similar to Western musicians; the distinction being that an idol is ultimately a product of

a K-pop entertainment organization. These agencies subject their idols to a variety of procedures in

order to increase their public appeal. They are constantly pushing these performers to master

complicated choreographies, embody appealing personalities, and develop impressive vocals. Though

this obsession with perfection may seem excessive, it has unquestionably paid off. As a result of the

seeming flawlessness of K-pop stars, many people around the world love and “idolize” them, adding to

their commercial success.

Additionally, Vergonia J. P. 2018 said in his article entitled “Why K-pop is huge in the

Philippines,” K-pop began to flourish on the Philippine entertainment scene in the early years of the

last decade, which saw the rise of a new generation of Korean groups and the Korean Wave, better

known as Hallyu, in the Asian market. Super Junior, Girls’ Generation, 2NE1, BIGBANG, 2PM,

4MINUTE, BEAST and ZE: A were just few K-pop idol groups who greatly contributed to K-pop’s

eventual dominance. The advent of social media also propelled K-pop to a higher level and served as a

key engine of K-pop’s global boom. From the Wonder Girls’ hit “Nobody” to PSY’s smash “Gangnam

Style,” which made history in 2012 as the first video to receive a billion views on YouTube, K-pop is

arguably experiencing its golden era.

METHODOLOGY

The data plan used in this study is explained and addresses the method used in the analysis.

This includes the research design, sample and sampling method, research locale, research participants,

research instrument, data gathering procedures, and data analysis.

Research Design

The purpose of this quantitative study is to survey the students’ behavior and lifestyle at the

public school located in Capitan Bayong National High School about the impacts of the Korean Wave

on the lifestyle of senior high school students with regards to their addiction to the Korean Wave.

Specifically, this research aims to gain a better understanding of how the students became addicted to

the Korean Wave. We also want to know their attitudes and behaviors towards the Korean Wave, also

known as “Hallyu,” and their perceptions of it, as well as their understanding of Korean dramas, songs,

and celebrities.

This chapter shows how this quantitative study was implemented and will use a cross-sectional

survey design will be used to gather data from a sample of senior high school students in the Captain

Bayong National High School.

Sample and Sampling Techniques

The survey will use simple random sampling technique to present a reliable presentation of the

students of CBNHS.

In order to ensure the reliability of respondents’ selection and avoid bias, the researchers will

distribute the survey questionnaire randomly to SHS students. This will assure that all SHS students

have equal chances of being selected to become a study participant.

Research Locale

The study will be conducted at Capitan Bayong National High School (CBNHS) in school year

2023. This school is located at Zone 3, Capitan Bayong of Impasug-ong. It has the school program

Junior and Senior High School. This is a community school where the people within this community

pursuing their children to study this institution to avoid traveling far places to study.

There are three curriculums offered in Senior High School of Capitan Bayong National High

School namely the Humanities and Social Science (HUMSS), Accountancy and Business Management

(ABM), and General Academic Strand (GAS).

Research Participants

A total of 152 Senior High School students will be randomly chosen from Accountancy and

Business Management (ABM), Humanities and Social Science (HUMSS), and General Academic

Strand (ABM). This will constitute the study participants from the total population of 152 student; in

as much as the objectives of the study revolved on the students in the entire senior high school. They

will be chosen using simple random sampling.

Sample Size.

The sample size will be the 60 SHS students of CBNHS. The researchers used Solvin’s formula

to determine the sample size of the subject.

Solvin’s Formula

𝑁
𝑛=
1 + 𝑁𝑒 2

n = sample size

N = population size

e = margin of error
Research Instrument.

The research instrument contains three sections. Part I (A). Understanding about the Korean

Wave, this section contains questions about how familiar are the respondents with the Korean wave.

Part II (B). Attitude and behavior towards the Korean Wave, this section contains questions that might

describe the behavior attitude of the respondents. Lastly, Part III (C). Perception and understanding of

K-drama, songs, and celebrities, this last section contains questions about the respondent’s perception

and understanding the knowledge that they had about Korean dramas, songs, and celebrities. This was

asked of our participants to answer our research questions and obtain the necessary data

This is an adaptive research instrument from KDA School of Public Policy and Management

by Rahmiati, Lita (2012) of Indonesia. Rahmiati’s study was all about “The Impact of the Korean Wave

on the Acceptance of Korean Culture and Products among Indonesians,” for her master’s degree. This

instrument is considered and valid and reliable. Rahmiati’s study aimed to examine the impact of

Korean wave to the acceptance and perception of Korean culture, product and Korean wave itself among

Indonesian general public.

The instrument used in this research was adjusted and modified by incorporating some

questions from Section I to Section III, as some questions on Rahmiati’s instrument were not applicable

for this study. This research instrument mostly 5-point Likert scale where 1 is the lowest point and 5 is

the highest in different frequencies.

This was done in order to maintain relevance for the respondent’s responses and to avoid time-

consuming answers.

Research Ethics

It is designed to protect intellectual property interests while encouraging collaboration.

Researchers will ask the respondents for permission to participate, so the researchers will ensure that

they are not forced to participate. The real identity of participants will not be revealed since the
researchers respect the participant’s confidentiality. All participants will be informed to answer the

questions with honesty, for their responses and identity will be treated confidentially.

Data Gathering Procedure

A letter of request to conduct the study was prepared. The researcher adapted a research

questionnaire to answer the question of this study. The data analysis process will help the researcher to

analyze the data using research questionnaires checklist using likert scale from Rahmiati of Indonesia,

this research questionnaires was also validated by the subject teacher then the researcher distributed the

instrument. The researcher conducts the research in Capitan Bayong National High School, through

survey, due to the advantages of the survey method. The researcher explains to the respondents about

the importance of their response to the study. The researcher clarifies some terms to the respondent so

that the respondents can answer the questionnaire with full knowledge of their responsibility as the

subject of the study. The researcher requested the participants to answer with all honesty. After the

respondents answered the questionnaire, the researcher collected and tallied the data for interpretation.

Data Analysis

The Philippines is among the many nations that experienced a significant impact due to the

surge in popularity of Korean culture. Particularly, the teenage break dancing, also called breaking and

in the Philippines has been greatly influenced by Korean culture, leading to the need for further research

and understanding. The study aims to explore the effects of Korean dramas, Korean pop music, and

Korean artists/idols on the lifestyles of learners. To gather information on the topic, researchers will

conduct interviews with the participants and transcribe their responses. The transcription will provide

valuable insights and details, which will be analyzed and coded to confirm the findings. The data

analysis process will help the researchers to better comprehend the influence of Korean culture on the

lifestyles of Filipino teenagers. After collecting the data, the results will be tallied, analyze and

interpreted based on requirements that the researchers needed. The final stage involves data verification,

this process includes the means of checking the validity of understanding by rechecking the transcript

and codes again, allowing the researchers to verify or modify the hypothesis (Sarantakos, 1998).

STATISTICAL TREATEMENT OF DATA

Statistical treatment of data is essential to make use of the data in the right form. Raw

data collection is only one aspect of any experiment. The organization of data is equally

important so that appropriate conclusion can be drawn. (Siddeharta Kalla, 2009).

In this study, we surveyed a group of senior high school students to investigate the

impacts of Korean wave on their lifestyle. We asked the students about their consumption of

Korean media, such as K-pop music, K-dramas, and K-movies, as well their interest in Korean

culture, food, and fashion. We also asked them about their daily routines, hobbies, and social

activities, to determine if there were any changes in their lifestyle that could be attributed to

their exposure to Korean wave.

After analyzing the data, we found that the mean score for consumption of Korean

media among student was 5.00 on a scale of 1 to 5, indicating a high level of engagement with

Korean wave. Moreover, the lowest score is 1.00 indicating for less activities with any media

that involve Korean wave.

Further analysis showed that the students who consumed more Korean media tended to

have a higher level of interest in Korean culture and were more likely to have change their

lifestyle due to Korean wave. Additionally, students who reported changes in their lifestyle

were more likely to have formed friendship or joined new social groups related to Korean wave.
CHAPTER IV

PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA

This chapter presents the results of the study on the effects of Korean waves to the

lifestyle of senior high School learners in CBNHS. The data collected from survey

questionnaire were analyzed using descriptive statistics and inferential statistics. The findings

of this study will provide insights into the impact of Korean waves on the lifestyle of senior

high school learners in CBNHS.

Descriptive Statistics

The survey questionnaire was administered to 60 senior high school learners in CBNHS. The

descriptive statistics of the respondent’s demographic profile were presented in Table 1.

TABLE 1: RESPONDENTS DEMOGRAPHIC PROFILE

Grade 12 35 58.3%
The table indicates that the survey respondents were predominantly female, with 82%

or 49 of 60 of the total respondents identifying as such. This suggests that the survey may have

been more appealing or more relevant to female students, or that female students may have

been more likely to participate in the survey than their male counterparts.

In terms of the grade level of the respondents, the data indicates that more than half of

the total respondents were in Grade 12, with 58.3% of the respondents falling into this category.

This may suggest that the survey was targeted towards Grade 12 students, or that Grade 12

students were more willing to participate in the survey than those in other grades. Conversely,

the data also shows that 42% of the respondents were in Grade 11, indicating that the survey

did capture a sizeable number of participants from this grade level as well.

The pie chart indicates that 100% of the SHS respondents surveyed reported having heard about the

Korean Wave. This suggests that the Korean Wave is a well-known phenomenon or cultural trend

among the target population of the survey. It may also indicate that the survey was targeted towards

individuals who were likely to have some familiarity with the Korean Wave, such as fans of Korean

music, dramas, or other cultural products.

The data in pie chart 1.2 shows that the majority of the respondents reported being

"Familiar" with the Korean Wave, with 16.8 out of 60 or 28% of the total respondents falling

into this category. This suggests that the respondents have some level of knowledge about the

Korean Wave, but may not be fully aware of all its aspects or may have limited exposure to it.

While they may have limited knowledge, it can still affect their lifestyle, potentially leading to

addiction if they are consistently exposed to it. In addition to this finding, the data also reveals

that 18% of the respondents reported being "Very familiar" with the Korean Wave, indicating

a higher level of knowledge and awareness. On the other hand, 13% of the respondents reported

being "Not Familiar" with the Korean Wave, indicating a lack of exposure or knowledge.

Based on the table above, 82% of the participants answered that they watch Korean

dramas and 43% of participants have a collection of Korean drama. And 78% of the participants

said that they listened to Korean songs. Also, 50% of the participants have a collection of

Korean song. The statistics indicate that a significant number of students are influenced by

Korean dramas and songs. This exposure impacts students by enhancing their cultural

awareness, providing language learning opportunities, creating emotional connections,

facilitating social interactions, and requiring a balance with academic responsibilities.

The data presented in Pie 1.4 suggests that only a small proportion of the total 60

respondents spend their time actively enjoying Korean entertainment, with only 29% of the

respondents indicating that they engage with it. This suggests that the respondents may have a

very minimal interest in Korean entertainment, or that they may not have had many

opportunities to engage with it. Furthermore, the data reveals that of the respondents who do enjoy

Korean entertainment, the majority (29%) spend less than one hour per week engaging with it. This

suggests that even among the small proportion of respondents who enjoy Korean entertainment, their

engagement with it is relatively limited. In contrast, 17% of the respondents spend more than three

hours per week enjoying Korean entertainment, indicating a higher level of interest and engagement.

Meanwhile, 12% of the respondents indicated that they never spend time enjoying Korean

entertainment, suggesting that they have little to no interest in it.

Based on the data presented in Pie 1.6, it appears that a significant proportion of the 60

respondents (46%) agree that the Korean wave has given them motivation to learn more about Korea.

This suggests that exposure to Korean entertainment, such as K-pop and Korean dramas, may have

piqued the interest of these respondents and led them to seek out additional information about Korea,

such as taking Korean language classes or learning more about Korean culture. It is worth noting that

while a majority of respondents agree or strongly agree that the Korean wave has motivated

them to learn more about Korea, a significant proportion of respondents (23%) strongly

disagree or disagree with this statement. This suggests that there may be some respondents who

do not see the Korean wave as a source of motivation for learning more about Korea, or who

may have other motivations for learning about Korea that are not related to Korean

entertainment

products and the Korean Wave. The majority of the respondents either indicated that

they are likely (30%) or very likely (18%) to be seen using Korean products, which

suggests that they perceive the use of Korean products as a way to enhance their social

image or personal brand. Additionally, the data suggests that some respondents are

willing to travel to Korea to obtain information or products related to the Korean Wave.

On the other hand, a smaller proportion of the respondents (8%) indicated that they are

very unlikely to be seen using Korean products. This suggests that there may be some
cultural or personal barriers that prevent these respondents from embracing the Korean

Wave.

Pie 2.1(B) shows that 41% of the 60 participants want to be seen looking impressive

with their Korean fashion among others. This suggests that the respondents have an interest in

Korean fashion and consider it a desirable style that they would like to adopt. The effect of this

on the participants will be gaining self-confidence. It will also improve their professional image

and personal growth. Although it has a positive side, there is also a negative side to consider.

They may face financial implications, some might have unrealistic beauty standards, and more.

Further analysis of the data reveals that the majority of the respondents (41%) are likely to

adopt Korean fashion, while only a small proportion (13%) are very likely to do so. Meanwhile,

the respondents and that it may be perceived as a desirable and exciting culinary experience.

The highest data of 48% indicates that the respondents are likely interested in trying Korean

food, while the middle data of 18% suggests that some respondents are very likely to try it.

However, it’s important to note that the lowest data of 7% indicates that there are still some

respondents who are not interested in trying Korean food, indicating that personal preferences

and cultural backgrounds may play a role in shaping their attitudes towards Korean cuisine.

could mean that these respondents are interested in emulating the style and beauty routines of

Korean celebrities or are intrigued by the quality and effectiveness of the products used by

them. The data also reveals that 22% of the respondents are very likely to be interested in the

products used by Korean celebrities, suggesting a higher level of interest and perhaps a

willingness to actively seek out and purchase these products. On the other hand, 8% of the

respondents indicated that they are very unlikely to be interested in the products used by Korean

The results of the gathered data show that the respondents have an extensive understanding of

Korean dramas, songs, and celebrities. The high percentage of "YES" indicates that the respondents

have a high perception and understanding of Korean dramas, songs, and celebrities. This means that

most of the choices have already captured the attention of the students, and some of them are actively

following every event related to the Korean wave, which has already impacted their lifestyle.

The data from Pie 2 suggests that among the 60 participants, only a relatively small proportion

of them actively follow information about Korean entertainment. Specifically, 37% of the respondents

indicated that they follow this information occasionally, but less than once a week. This indicates that

the majority of the respondents may not be actively seeking out information about Korean

entertainment, or may only be interested in it to a limited extent, respondents who occasionally follow

the Korean wave have minimal lifestyle impact. Their exposure to Korean entertainment is limited,

leading to minimal influence on their lifestyle choices. Their preferences are diverse, influenced by

various cultural factors and personal interests. While they have some interest in the Korean wave, they
do not actively adopt Korean cultural elements or heavily incorporate them into their daily lives. Their

social interactions are not heavily centered around Korean entertainment, and they have exposure to a

wide range of global cultures and entertainment forms.

In contrast, only 13% of the respondents indicated that they follow this information

every day, suggesting a higher level of interest and engagement. Meanwhile, 12% of the

respondents indicated that they never follow information about Korean entertainment,

suggesting that they have little to no interest in it. Overall, the data suggests that while Korean

entertainment may have a dedicated following among some of the participants, it may not be a

major interest for the majority of them.

Chapter V

Chapter 5 presents the findings of the study on the impacts of the Korean Wave on the

lifestyle of senior high school students at Capitan Bayong National High School. The survey

revealed that the majority of the respondents were female, predominantly from Grade 12. The

findings indicate a high level of awareness and familiarity with the Korean Wave among the

students. They actively engage with Korean dramas and songs, showing significant influence

on their lifestyle choices. The Korean Wave has also motivated students to learn more about

Korea, and they express interest in being associated with Korean products, fashion, cuisine,

and travel. This chapter provides a detailed analysis of the findings, discussing their

implications and contributions to the existing literature.

Summary of Findings

The research conducted at Capitan Bayong National High School aimed to investigate

the impacts of the Korean wave on the lifestyle of senior high school students. Surveying 60

participants and analyzing their responses revealed several key findings. Firstly, the majority

of the respondents were female, indicating a higher level of interest or relevance among female

students. Additionally, the survey captured a significant number of Grade 12 students,

suggesting that this grade was more receptive to the study. All participants reported being

aware of the Korean Wave, highlighting its widespread recognition among the target

population. Most respondents claimed to be familiar or very familiar with the Korean Wave,

indicating a strong influence and popularity. Korean dramas and songs were found to exert a

significant influence on the surveyed students. The majority of participants watched Korean

dramas and listened to Korean songs, with many even collecting them. This exposure enhanced

their cultural awareness, provided language learning opportunities, fostered emotional

connections, facilitated social interactions, and necessitated a balance with academic

responsibilities. However, only a small percentage of respondents actively engaged with

Korean entertainment, with the majority spending less than an hour per week on it. Some

respondents showed no interest in Korean entertainment. A considerable proportion of

respondents agreed that the Korean wave had motivated them to learn more about Korea, but

there were also those who disagreed with this statement. Many respondents expressed an

interest in being associated with Korean products and the Korean wave, indicating a desire to

enhance their social image or personal brand. Interest in Korean fashion was evident among a

significant number of participants, although some respondents were unlikely to adopt it.

Attitudes towards Korean cuisine were mostly positive, with a desire to try it expressed by a

substantial proportion of respondents. Many participants expressed a strong desire to travel to

Korea to learn more about the Korean wave, while others remained undecided or had a very

unlikely inclination to travel for this purpose. Finally, a moderate level of interest in Korean

celebrity culture was observed, although a small percentage indicated a lack of interest in

celebrity products. Overall, the findings suggest that the Korean wave has made an impact on

the lifestyle of the surveyed senior high school students, with varying levels of engagement

and preferences influenced by cultural factors and personal interests.

Discussion of Findings

The findings of this study reveal that senior high school students at Capitan Bayong

National High School have a strong awareness and familiarity with the Korean Wave. The

majority of the respondents were female, indicating that the survey appealed more to girls or

that they were more willing to participate. Additionally, a larger proportion of Grade 12

students participated, suggesting their greater interest in the topic. The impact of Korean

dramas and songs on the students' lifestyle choices is significant. A majority of the participants

reported watching Korean dramas and listening to Korean songs, indicating the substantial
influence of Korean entertainment on their preferences and behaviors. This exposure to Korean

media not only enhances their cultural awareness but also provides language learning

opportunities, emotional connections, and social interactions. However, it is important to note

that the level of engagement varied among the respondents, with some having limited exposure

while others showed a higher level of interest and engagement. The Korean Wave has

motivated a considerable number of students to learn more about Korea. The appeal of K-pop

and Korean dramas has sparked their curiosity and led them to seek additional information

about the country, such as taking Korean language classes or learning about Korean culture.

However, it is interesting to observe that not all respondents attributed their motivation to the

Korean Wave, suggesting that there might be other factors influencing their interest in Korea.

influence of the Korean Wave extends beyond entertainment consumption. Many

students expressed a desire to be associated with Korean products, fashion, cuisine, and travel.

They indicated a likelihood of using Korean products and adopting Korean fashion styles as a

way to enhance their personal image and social identity. Moreover, their interest in trying

Korean cuisine and their willingness to travel to Korea demonstrate the impact of the Korean

wave on their culinary preferences and desire for cultural immersion. It is important to

acknowledge the limitations of this study, such as the restricted sample size of senior high

school students from a single school, which may limit the generalizability of the findings.

Additionally, self-reporting and recall bias may have influenced the accuracy of the responses.

Future research should aim to include a larger and more diverse sample to provide a more

comprehensive understanding of the impacts of the Korean Wave across different demographic

groups.

This study contributes to the existing literature by shedding light on the influence of the

Korean Wave on the lifestyle of senior high school students. The findings underscore the

significant impact of Korean entertainment on their cultural awareness, preferences, and

aspirations. This research opens up avenues for further exploration of the effects of the Korean

Wave on various age groups and societal contexts. It also provides practical insights for

educators, policymakers, and marketers seeking to understand and cater to the interests and

needs of this target audience.

Recommendations

To address the impact of the Korean Wave on the lifestyle of Capitan Bayong SHS

learners, it is recommended to incorporate media literacy education into the curriculum. This

will equip students with critical thinking skills to navigate the influence of popular culture

effectively. Additionally, organizing cultural exchange programs with South Korean

educational institutions can provide learners with firsthand experiences of Korean culture,

fostering cultural appreciation and intercultural competence.

It is important to strike a balance between foreign influences and local culture. Encouraging

learners to research and explore their own Filipino heritage will promote a strong sense of

identity while appreciating the diversity brought by the Korean Wave. Furthermore,

establishing support mechanisms and awareness campaigns for responsible media

consumption, along with collaboration with parents and guardians, will help learners maintain

a healthy balance between their online and offline lives.

By implementing these recommendations, Capitan Bayong National High School can support

learners in navigating the impact of the Korean Wave, promote cultural understanding, and

foster responsible media habits. This approach ensures a well-rounded education that values

both local and global cultural influences, empowering learners to make informed decisions and

maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Conclusion

In our study, we examined the impact of the Korean Wave on the lifestyle of senior

high school learners at Capitan Bayong National High School (CBNHS). We introduced the

research topic, highlighting its significance and background, and outlined the research problem,

objectives, hypothesis, and the significance of the study.

To conduct the study, we employed a cross-sectional survey design using simple

random sampling. The participants were senior high school students from different academic

strands at CBNHS. We used a modified questionnaire based on a validated instrument from a

similar study as our research instrument. We distributed the questionnaire and collected the

responses, which we later analyzed by coding and interpreting the data.

Based on the findings from the survey, it became evident that the Korean Wave had a

significant impact on the lifestyle of senior high school learners at CBNHS. The participants

displayed positive perceptions towards the Korean Wave and dedicated considerable time to

engaging with Korean dramas, music, and celebrities. They also demonstrated a deep

understanding of Korean culture, particularly in relation to Korean dramas, songs, and

celebrities.

In conclusion, our study highlights the significant influence of the Korean Wave on the

lifestyle of senior high school learners at CBNHS. The participants exhibited a strong affinity

towards Korean popular culture, showcasing behaviors and attitudes that align with being

passionate fans of the Korean Wave. The findings shed light on various aspects of their lives,

including their preferences in music, fashion, and entertainment. These insights can raise

awareness among learners, parents, and educators about the potential effects of excessive

exposure to Korean popular culture and serve as a foundation for future research in this area.
