SLO 1

Students will demonstrate an understanding of basic computer skills by:

a. Accessing the Internet on their laptop or desktop computer
b. Using search engines to find reputable sources for coursework
c. Downloading files from the Internet successfully
1a. ACCESSING THE INTERNET
• In order to connect to the Internet from a wireless connection, click on
the Network Icon in the bottom right corner of the screen.

• Choose a network and then click Connect.

• Type in a password if prompted, click Next.
• If you would like for your computer to be discoverable on the network
• click Yes
• Otherwise, click No.
• Once connected, use a browser to access the Internet.
A browser is a software program that allows users to access webpages on a
computer or mobile device.
• Tap or click the address bar (a text box at the top of the current page)

• Enter the web address of the page that you would like to visit and press
enter

• An address or URL is a unique address that identifies the webpage such as

www.parisjc.edu
• You may then scroll to view the page or click links on the page to take you
to other pages within the site
1b. USING SEARCH ENGINES
A search engine is a website that takes user input
and searches a database of indexed web pages
to find pages from other websites.
• Run the browser
• If it does not contain a separate Search box near to the address bar, enter
the web address of your preferred search engine
• In the search engine, type the desired search text in the Search box. Be
descriptive in your search to narrow down the results and press ENTER

• Scroll through the results and click on related result

Since anyone can post content on the Internet, make
sure that you are using credible websites in your
research. Academic databases will provide scholarly,
peer-reviewed articles. Four things to consider when
viewing results from a search engine include:
➢Who is the author of the source

➢Who is sponsoring the source

➢What is the purpose of the article

➢Who is the intended audience

The Librarians at PJC can help to find relevant, reliable,
and authoritative sources for a research paper.

coursework, visit Library Services on the Paris Junior
College website.

1c. DOWNLOADING FILES FROM THE INTERNET
Once a useful paper is found, it can be downloaded or
saved to your computer by clicking the download link
associated with the paper.

Files on the Internet may contain viruses or malware. A

reliable antivirus and anti-malware should be installed
before downloading anything.
To download this sample paper, you would click
on “download full text” in the upper right corner.
A .pdf of the paper opens in a new page.
Click the down arrow in the top right of the screen.
In the save as box, you will choose where to save the file
and change the file name if necessary.
