For good conductors, an increase in temperature results in an increased resistance level

consequently conductors have a positive temperature coefficient.

For semiconductor material an increase in temperature results in a decrease in the resistance

level. Consequently semiconductor has negative temperature coefficient.
Insulator
As with semiconductor, an increase in the temperature results in a decrease in the resistance of an
insulator. The results is a negative temperature coefficient

Types of resistors
 Fixed
 Variable

Conductance
Is the reciprocal or inverse of resistance.
Determine the conductance of a 1 ohm, 50 k ohm, 10 mega ohm resistor

Ohm’s Law
This law was developed by German physicist George ohm in 1827. This law explains the
relationship between the three quantities voltage, current and resistance. It states that the current
flowing in an electric circuit is directly proportional to the applied voltage and inversely
proportional to the resistance.
I = 5 amps

v = 12 volts

R= 2 ohms

Calculate the current through 2-ohm resistor in figure if the voltage drop across it is 16 volts

= 0.008 Amps

Power is nothing but how much work can be accomplished in a specify amount of time which is
know as rate of work.
What is the power dissipated by a 5-ohm resistor if the current id 4 amps? 80 watts
Determine the current through a 5-kilo ohm resistor when the power dissipated by the element is
20 milliwatts? 2 m amps
