10 POETIC DEVICES:
1. ALLITERATION
- It is the phonetic alignment and repeated use of a sound or letter in the first
syllable of a word. Alliteration can be used for any combination of two words or
more. As a poetic tool, alliteration is one of the oldest, most widely used and
effective means of enhancing your poetry.
• Ex: “The gracious green grass grew quickly.”
2. AMBIGUITY
- is the type of meaning in which a phrase, statement or resolution is not explicitly
defined, making several interpretations plausible
• Ex: "then and only then did I come close"
3. IRONY
- is a literary device in which contradictory statements or situations reveal a reality
that is different from what appears to be true.
• Ex: “The 98 yr old won the lottery and died the next day.”
4. SIMILES
- A simile, much like a metaphor, is used as a comparison or an analogy. The
difference is that similes use the word "like" or "as" in their comparison.
• Ex: “She had a smile like the sun.”
5. METAPHOR
- Are figurative means of comparing something to another unrelated entity in
order to contrive the full meaning or impact of that something. A metaphor puts
an object or concept in a more clear perspective, provides imagery and creates
an analogy to give deeper understanding to a thing, a story, a message or a
concept.
• Ex: “Her eyes as bright as the sun.”
6. PERSONIFICATION
- It can be defined as attributing a human characteristic to an inanimate object or
notion.
• Ex: “He stood there motionless, lifeless occasionally shining a bright beam
of light.”
7. SIBILANCE
- A type of literary device and figure of speech wherein a hissing sound is created
in a group of words through the repetition of 's' sounds.
• Ex: “The sleek, slimy snake slithered along the sharp, spiky grass.”
8. ONOMATOPOEIA
- It is one of the coolest poetic devices out there; its when the phonetic
pronunciation and sound of a word is parallel to the word's actual meaning.
• Ex: "I felt the whiplash crack of death slash by back so deep..."
9. HYPERBOLE
- A rhetoric art of exaggeration. Hyperbole is a poetic tool that allows you to blow
something way out of proportion. They create an effect of large emphasis.
• Ex. “I love you to the moon and back.”
10. REPETITION
- A simple repeating of a word, within a short space of words, with no particular
placement of the words to secure emphasis.
• Ex: Write “Boys will be boys”
