Descriptions

Description:
The PPM-2 is an anti-personnel, blast mine produced by the former East Germany. This mine has been widely deployed in a variety of countries. The PPM-2 is unusual
in having a piezoelectric fuze and an electric detonator. It has a lead shear arming delay system similar to that found in the Soviet PMN (see separate entry). The
arming delay starts when the safety pin is withdrawn. It consists of a spring-loaded steel wire being drawn through a small lead block. The arming delay time depends
on the ambient temperature. A hotter temperature results in a softer lead block, which results in a shorter arming time. The arming delay takes 1.5 – 3 hours. When the
wire cuts through the lead block, a short-circuit device is removed and the mine is now armed. A weight of approximately 13 kg is sufficient to depress the pressure
plate, which in turn depresses the plunger of the piezoelectric fuze. The resulting spark is passed to an electric detonator, which initiates the main explosive charge.

The mechanism in the piezoelectric fuze is similar to the mechanism used to ignite gas burners on a kitchen oven. Standard EMR procedures should be used when
dealing with this mine.

Method of Operation:
Pressure. Ensure that EMR precautions are taken as the mine has a piezoelectric fuze.

Markings:
The mine is black with raised markings PPM-2 and the letter T on its base. Depressed in the base of the mine is the manufacturer's loading date.
