WMU HAS RELEASED FIGURES FOR ITS MINORITY ENROLLMENT THIS FALL

Kalamazoo, MI. [November 19,2019]—[Western Michigan University] Minority enrollment has

increased 5.2 percent this fall. Total campus enrollment grew less than one percent this year,

leaving total campus enrollment around 26,000.

“Our many efforts in recent years are beginning to produce the desired results,” said

President Edward B. Montgomery.

He claims Western has taken a major step forward, and they calculate this by using self-

reported student data. Enrollment of black students increased by 434 students to 2,278.

Though the increase in minority students is a gratifying sight, President Montgomery

says, “we still have more to do. This is only the beginning.”

Among other minority groups, the American Indian student enrollment increased from 46

students to 204. Asian student increase of 144 to 1,565. Hispanic student increase from 128 to

1,452.

Compared to previous years, the total minority enrollment has increased. Five years ago

it was 1,540, and just this year that number has reached 2,754.
