Guidelines for HOLES in BONDEK II sheet

Bondek II acts as longitudinal tensile reinforcement similarly to conventional bar or

fabric reinforcement docs in concrete slabs. Consequently, holes in BONDEK II sheets,
to accommodate pipes and ducts, reduce the effective area of the steel sheeting and can
adversely affect the performance of a slab.

General Rule:
1. Obtain approval from the design engineer before cutting
2. Do not cut holes through decking before the concrete pour, the concrete strength
should achieve 70% design strength when cut hole.
3. Use appropriate drilling or cutting tools, no hot work method is allowed to cutting the
decking.
4. Where holes, or groups of holes are considered to be of structural significant (i.e. in flat
slabs, etc.). The design data should indicate any special reinforcement.
5. Dented area should be treated as opening.
6. For reinforcement around opening, the detail should follow the project specification and
typical detail. All the detail shown be approval by project/ design engineer.
7. Where holes, or groups of holes are considered to be structurally insignificant,
then the following rules apply:
(i) Minimum unsupported edge distance = width of hole W1 or >500mm with is
greater
(ii) Maximum width of isolated opening measured at right-angles to span = 1000
maximum length of isolated opening measured parallel to span = 0.25 span lx
(iii)Maximum total width ( w1+w2+w3 ) of multiple holes measured at right-angles
to the span lx =0.25 span lx
(iv) Small isolated holes with sides 150mm or les can generally be ignored structurally.
Significant holes should be drawn to scale and shown on the reinforcement
drawing.
(v) Openings must not be closer together than 1.5W or 300mm, whichever is the
greater. If the openings are closer, they must be considered as one opening.
(vi) Larger isolated holes with sides 500mm or less either:

.
(vii) Large isolated holes with sides (500- 700) mm Treat as (vi) above, but in
addition trim top of holes with similar bars. If depth of slab exceeds 250mm, provide
diagonal reinforcement of similar area in top and bottom, but consideration should be
given to the congestion of multiple layers. Framing is generally necessary

(viii) groups of holes within boundary of 500mm or less. Trim as single hole using
methods described in (vi) above. Bars should pass alongside holes where possible.
(ix) Groups of holes within boundary of (500- 700) mm or less. Trim as single hole
using methods described in (vi) and (vii) above.

(x) For holes is >700mm, the sub-frame is necessary around the holes. The rebar
detail can follow the (vi) and (vii) above.
