Short Story:
“Pen the Cat”
The nest was initially discovered by the spotted cat, named Pen. It had nothing in it
because it is not finished already. She said, “I'll wait!” because she was a patient cat and summer
was ahead of her. She waited a week before climbing back up to the top of the tree to look into
the nest. Two smooth, brilliant eggs in a gorgeous shade of blue were laid. “Young birds are
better than eggs.” Pen remarked. So she said again, “I'll wait.” She did everything a cat would do
to pass the time while waiting, including catching mice and rats, washing herself, sleeping, and
sleeping some more.
After a further week had gone, she once more climbed the tree and looked inside the nest.
There were five eggs this time. “Eggs may be excellent, but young birds are preferable, the
spotted cat repeated. I'll hold out a bit longer!” she said. She therefore waited a little bit longer
before climbing back up to see. There are five little birds with large eyes, long necks, and open
yellow beaks. Pen then curled up on the branch, licked her nose, and purred because she was so
content. “It pays off to be patient!” she said.
However, she noticed that the young birds were really skinny when she turned to look at
them again to decide which one to take first. The spotted cat had never in her life seen anything
so skinny.
She thought to herself, “Now, if I were to wait just a few more days, they might gain
weight. Although thin birds can be good, obese birds are far superior. I'll hold off!” She waited,
and while watching the father bird bring worms to the nest all day, she exclaimed, “They must be
gaining weight quickly! They'll get as fat as I want them to soon. How beneficial it is to have
patience.”
Finally, she had the thought that they must now be fat enough one day. I won't hold out
any longer. “Aha! How talented they'll be!” Pen said. She licked her chops the entire time as she
made her way up the tree, thinking about the chubby little birds. And when she got to the top and
peered into the nest, nothing was there! Pen then sat down on the limb and said, “Well, those
birds are the meanest, and most unappreciative creatures I've ever seen!”
