ABSTRACT

Concrete is composed principally of aggregate, a Portland or blended cement, and water, and
may contain other cementitious materials and/or chemical admixtures. Chemical admixtures
used to accelerate, retard, improve workability, reduce mixing water requirements, increase
strength, or alter other properties of the concrete. The selection of concrete proportions
involves a balance between economy and requirement for placeability, strength, durability,
density and sometimes appearance. The calculated proportions must always be considered
subject to revision on the basis of experience with trail batches. Laboratory trail batches
should be verified and adjusted in field using mixes of the size and type to be used during
construction.
• What is mix design of concrete ?
Concrete mix design is the science of choosing the types of ingredients , and the proportions
to use them in ,to create concrete that meets the technical specifications For a given
construction project .
Concrete mix design is the process of detemining the exact proportions of cement , aggregate
water , and admixtures which are used in constructing a concrete mixture that can meet
specific strength requires he needed properties vary depending on project.

• Necessity of Mix design

1] Reduced thermal peaks

2] High workability for longer periods
3] Lower pumping pressure
4] Extended setting with longer workability
5] Higher ultimate strength
6] Reduced shrinkage and creep
7] Increased ease in finishing concrete
• Factors affecting mix design

1]Compressive strength of concrete.

2]Workability of concrete.
3]Durability of concrete.
4]Maximum nominal size of aggregate.
5]Grading and type of aggregate.
6]Quality Control at site.

• Methods of Mix design

1] Trial and Adjustment method of mix design.

2] British DoE mix design method.
3] ACI mix design method.
4] Concrete mix proportioning-IS Guidelines.
5] Rapid method for mix design.
6] I.S. CODE Method I.S 10262-2019
7] Graphic method of mix design
8] Minimum voids method for concrete mix design
9] Maximum density method for concrete mix design
10] IRC 44 method
11] An experimental method for concrete mix design
12] Abrams w/c ratio for concrete mix design
Design the concrete mix to obtain the characteristic end of 28 days.

Required data :-

M35 grade concrete

50mm slump
Exposure condition –severe
Type of cement –OPC 43 grade
Non – pumpable
Sp.gr. Of cement – 2.95
Sp.gr. Of F.A. – 2.71
Sp.gr. Of C.A – 2.74
NON – SSD Aggregate
Size of aggregate – 20mm
Zone II
SOLUTION :-

Step 1 :- To find target mean strength (fck’):

Fck’ = fck + 1.65 X S

S= 5.0

= 35+ 1.65 X 5.0

Fck’ = 43.25 MPA

X=6.5

Fck’= fck + X

= 35+6.5

Fck’= 41.5

Select whichever is more

Fck’ = 43.25

Step 2 : - To find W/C ratio:

Fig :1 , Page No 4) IS Code 10262:2019

For 43.25 Mpa Strength
W/C Ratio = 0.39

Using Exposure condition (IS 456 Page .No:- 20)

W/C = 0.45

Adopt W/C ratio ,Which is less

This is lower than the max. value of 0.45
0.39 < 0.45 (hence Ok)

W/C = 0.39

Step-3) To determination of aggregate air content

In This Case SSD are Not used

Hence air Content is 1% = 0.01

Step-4) Selection of water content

Used Table 4 , Page No 5 , IS 10262 : 2019

For 20 MM Aggregate
W = 186 Kg Pr Liter
Here , Slump Is 50 MM
Here slump value is 50 mm so there is no need to add more
Step-5) To find cement content

𝑾/𝑪 = 0.39 (186 )/𝑪 = 0.39

C = 476.92 Kg
As per Severe condition cement = 320 kg/m^3
By IS 456 , Page No 20 ,Table 5
But 476.92kg is greater than450 kg
According to IS 456, cement content should not be greater than 450 kg. Therefore,
Here, use cement C = 450 kg

Step-6) Calculate of coarse aggregate content:

Use Table 5 Page no 6 IS 10262

Size of Aggregate. 20mm is used zone (II) given
For w/c = 0.5
Hence, Aggregate. Content = 0.62
But W/C ratio is 0.39
Which is less than 0.5
Decrease W/C ratio = 0.50 – 0.39
= 0.11
In this case total Aggregate. Is increased by 0.01
For every 0.05 increment
Increment in total Aggregate. = (0.11𝑋 0.01)/0.05
= 0.022
Actual Total Aggregate. Content = 0.62 + 0.022
= 0.642
Then,
Total volume of C.A = 0.642
Total volume of F.A = 1– 0.642 = 0.358
Step 7:- To find actual volume of materials:

1) Volume of water = 186/(1 𝑋 1000)

= 0.186 m^3
2)Volume of cement = (450÷2.95)×(1÷1000)
= 0.15 m^3
5)To find Aggregate. Volume
= 1- [ 0.15 + 0.197 + 0.01 ]
= 0.643
6)Mass of C.A
= 0.643 X 0.642 X 2.74 X 1000
= 1131.08
7)Mass of F.A
= 0.643 X 0.358 X 2.71 X 1000
= 623.82

Step-8) Find Proportions :

Cement F.A C.A Water

450 623.82 1131.08 186

1 : 1.38 : 2.51
