Common Spelling Mistakes Made By Bed Students

Abstract

English is currently the Lingua Franca in the world and it is the most predominantly used language for
bridging the communication gap for people with different first languages. Spelling is an integral part of
the word knowledge. Accurate spelling in English is based on layers of linguistic knowledge which
includes phonological, orthographic, morphological and semantic information pertaining to any
particular word. So, the study aims to study the commonly misspelled words in English made by B.Ed.
students.

Statement of the problem: The study that the investigator has undertaken is entitled. The Study on
Commonly Misspelled Words in English made by B.Ed. Students.

Need and significance of the study

Addressing spelling error should be an integral part of teaching English language. Wrong spelling of
English words often causes the mispronunciation of words. The purpose of the present study is to
investigate the common spelling mistakes made by B.Ed. Students.

Objectives of the study

➢ To determine the probable causes of spelling errors

➢ To analyze some of the commonly made spelling mistakes by the students

➢ To provide ways to increase the language competency of a students.

Methodology and procedure

A questionnaire was made consisting of 20 test items of some common words that are misspelled by the
students. The investigator explained the importance of correct spelling in writing and reading of English
language. The students were made aware of the common reasons for making spelling mistakes.

Analysis and interpretation

Almost all the students had some problems with spellings. Mistakes made by the students could be
categorised as- substitution, emission, insertion and transposition. Almost 40.9% of the mistakes caused
by students were due to omission of letters. 6.8% of the mistakes were due to the extra letters and the
rest were caused by interchanging letters in a word.

Findings

The inconsistency of spelling and pronunciation of words in English language is the major reason for
spelling errors among students, another reason for spelling mistakes are of mother tongue influence.
Omission of letters is another common mistake made by students.

Suggestions

Some ways to reduce spelling mistakes and improve writing are-


❖ Using Mnemonics

❖ Making a list of words students have trouble while spelling

❖ Chunking method

Conclusions

The conclusion from the study reveals that most of the students face problems inwriting the correct
spelling of common words in English. The study could identify the different reasons and different
strategies to improve the errors caused by them.
