KETTLE CHIPS

Social Motion Films advertises “one of the best potato chips known to man”, Kettle Chips,
through a peculiar turn in Television Commercial (TVC) creation with the utility of stop-motion, a well-
distinguished filmmaking technique where objects within consecutive frames are maneuvered by hand.
Throughout the commercial, the stop motion technique was able to create illusions with images such as a
cooking pan, a tree, and a boy’s face made out of personified moving Kettle Chips, the product itself
being advertised. Moreover, the commercial exhibits a somewhat level-headed narration of how the
potato chips were made, the ingredients which resulted in the product itself, and the distinctive features of
the product such as “No added MSG, No Artificial Flavorings or Color” which in turn acquaints the
viewers with what they need to know about Kettle Chips. With the 30 seconds stop-motion video
accompanied by the notable sounds of the accordion playing in the background and the calm modulation
of the narrator’s voice, this gives the viewer a somehow “one-of-a-kind” viewing experience due to how
the TVC is not uplifting yet not boring at the same time compared to other TVC’s with tropes where such
products are advertised with an enthusiastic and high level of energy (Stepford Consumer Trope).

Although as the product’s brand or company may say “We think simple is better”, the lack of
popping colors makes the color scheme of the whole thirty seconds of the advertisement near and close to
being monotonous thus, this may not captivate the viewer’s eye. Furthermore, starting the advertisement
by saying “These are Kettle Chips” when “Kettle Chips” is already embossed in the packaging is
pointless, rather than stating the obvious, the video should start with a question, a pun, a punchline, or
concise description about the product such as “Simple and Tasty…” to keep the viewers’ attention
throughout the commercial.
