“Learning despite challenges”

It was 30 minutes after the sun has set, when we arrived to our destination.
A small designated school, in the municipality of New Bataan, we were greeted by
silent treatment of the environment and cold the breeze of a country side,
although it was already summer.
By the next day at exactly 6:00 am of the 16 th day of April, we started our
mission to teach non-reader learners. Inside the four corner of the classroom that
was filled with excitement, we met Mark Gozon a young grade 2 learner of the
said school. He was timid and shy but he smiles a lot as we approach him. His eyes
filled with hesitant and excitement as we started our instruction. He has high
respect with learning even though he was part of the reading intervention
program intended for learner who has deficiencies in learning. He paid lot
attention throughout the learning process, yet we didn’t see any small
improvement in the first 5 days of intervention.
Aling Rosa told us that Mark’s learning capability was affected by their family
status, for they are considered as family in the poverty line. His parents could not
afford to sustain his needs at school, he only recycled old notebooks, pencils which
are thumb sized and old uniforms donated by his older neighbor who goes in the
same school. His parents are both employee in a nearby coconut farm, whose
combined income was enough to filled their stomach for a day. It was not
sustainable in terms for educational assistance for Mark.
Despite of these challenges, he goes to school so early that he is the one who
volunteered to clean the room. He participated every activity, showing his
excitement and eagerness to learn. From timid, shy, and silent learner in the early
days, he is now actively read out every words, sentences, and selections with
minimum mistakes. He smiles a lot every time he got correct response. His
hardwork resulted into success as he got the top 3 in our reading intervention
program. “learning is hard, for those who says it is hard and learning is easy for
those who says it is easy”. Those are his words to express his gratitude.
