Adler
Adler
4. The value of all human activity must be seen from the viewpoint of social interest.
● GEMEINSCHAFTSGEFÜHL
○ German term of the misleading translation--social interest.
○ A better translation might be “social feeling” or “community feeling”.
○ Actually has a meaning that is not fully expressed by any English
word/phrase.
○ Roughly it means feeling with oneness with all humanity; it implies
membership in the social community of all people.
● A person with well-developed gemeinschaftsgefuhl strives not for personal
superiority but for perfection for all people in an ideal community.
● Social interest can be defined as an attitude of relatedness with humanity in
general as well as an empathy for each member of the human community. It
manifests itself as cooperation with others for social advancement rather than for
personal gain.
● Social interest is the natural condition of the human species and the adhesive that
binds society together.
● Without social interest, society will perish. Therefore, social interest is a necessity
for perpetuating the human species.
ABNORMAL DEVELOPMENT
● People are what they make of themselves.
♥ GENERAL DESCRIPTION
● According to Adler, the one factor underlying all types of maladjustments is
underdeveloped social interest.
● Besides lacking social interest, NEUROTICS TEND TO:
○ Set their goals too high.
○ Live in their own private world.
○ Have a rigid and dogmatic style of life.
● People become failures in life because they are over concerned with themselves
and care little about others.
● Their view of the world is not in focus with that of other individuals and they
possess what Adler called “private meaning”. These people find everyday living to
be hard work, requiring great work effort.
♥ EXTERNAL FACTORS in MALADJUSTMENTS
1. EXAGGERATED PHYSICAL DEFICIENCIES
● People with exaggerated physical deficiencies sometimes develop exaggerated
feelings of inferiority because they overcompensate for their inadequacy.
● They tend to be overly concerned with themselves and lack consideration for
others.
● They feel as if they are living in an enemy country, fear defeat more than they desire
success, and are convinced that life’s major problems can be solved only in a selfish
manner.
2. PAMPERED STYLE OF LIFE
● Lies at the heart of most neuroses.
● Pampered people have weak social interest but a strong desire to perpetuate the
pampered, parasitic relationship they originally had with one or both of their
parents.
● They expect others to look after them, overprotect them, and satisfy their needs.
● CHARACTERIZED BY:
○ Extreme discouragement.
○ Indecisiveness.
○ Oversensitivity.
○ Impatience.
○ Exaggerated emotion, especially anxiety.
● They see the world with private vision and believe that they are entitled to be first
in everything.
● Pampered children feel unloved because their parents do too much for them and
treat them as if they were incapable of solving their own problems.
● They’ll feel neglected as well whenever they must fend for themselves since they
fear being separated from the parent.
3. NEGLECTED STYLE OF LIFE
● Abused and mistreated children develop little social interest.
● They have little confidence in themselves and tend to overestimate difficulties
connected with life’s major problems.
● They are distrustful of others and are unable to cooperate for the common welfare.
● They see society as an enemy country, feel alienated, and experience a strong
sense of envy toward the success of others.
● More suspicious and more likely to be dangerous to others than pampered ones.
SAFEGUARDING TECHNIQUE
● Adler believed that people create patterns of behavior to protect their exaggerated
sense of self-esteem against public disgrace. These protective devices, called
safeguarding tendencies, enable people to hide their inflated self-image and to
maintain their current style of life.
● FREUDIAN DEFENSE MECHANISM -- unconscious; protect ego from anxiety;
common to everyone.
● ADLERIAN SAFEGUARDING TENDENCIES -- conscious; shield a person’s self-
esteem from public disgrace; only neurotic symptoms.
MASCULINE PROTEST
● Believed that the psychic life of women is essentially the same as that of men and
that a male-dominated society is not natural, but rather an artificial product of
historical development.
● This is a universal drive.
● According to Adler, cultural and social practices--not anatomy--influence many
men and women to overemphasize the importance of being manly--masculine
protest.
1. RULING/DOMINANT TYPE
● Behaves without regard for others.
● These people are characterized early on by a tendency to be generally aggressive
and dominant over others, possessing an intense energy that overwhelms anything
or anybody who gets in their way.
● High in high activity and low on social interest.
● E.g. bullies and sadists (extreme); alcoholics and drug addicts (less violent)
● TEMPERAMENT: choleric (yellow bile)
○ Hot and dry
○ Angry all the time
2. LEANING/GETTING TYPE
● Most common.
● Individuals of this type are sensitive, and while they may put a shell up around
themselves to protect themselves, they end up relying on others to carry them
through life’s challenges.
● Low on high activity, low on social interest.
● Dependent; prone to phobias, obsessive compulsive, anxieties, and dissociation.
● TEMPERAMENT: phlegmatic (green bile)
○ Wet and cold
○ Sluggish/dependency
3. AVOIDING TYPE
● People of this type have such low energy, they recoil within themselves to conserve
it, avoiding life as a whole and other people in particular.
● Neglected style of life; fear of failures.
● Low on high activity, low on social interest.
● EXTREME CASE: develop psychosis--the end result of entirely retreating into
oneself.
● TEMPERAMENT: melancholic (black bile)
○ Cold and dry
○ Sad constantly
4. SOCIALLY USEFUL TYPE
● People of this type are basically healthy individuals, possessing an adequate, but
not overbearing, social interest and energy.
● High in high activity, high in social interest.
● TEMPERAMENT: sanguine (red/blood bile)
○ Cheerfulness and friendly.
RELATED RESEARCH
● Some researchers argue that using social media serves the purpose of increasing
gemeinschaftsgefühl.
♥ BIRTH ORDER EFFECTS
● In 1996, Frank Sulloway published “Born to Rebel: Birth Order, Family Dynamics and
Creative Lives” in which he wrote that siblings compete for an important and often
scarce resource: parental affection and attention.
○ FIRST BORNS:
■ Likely to be achievement-oriented, anxious, conformist,
conventional.
○ LATER BORNS:
■ Tend to be more adventurous, open to experience, innovative, and
rejecting the status quo.
○ A study tested his predictions and interviewed a group of college students
who had been arrested for civil disobedience. As predicted, there was a
significantly higher percentage of later-borns among them.
● Adler’s predictions, however, have not found strong support in the research
literature.
♥ EARLY RECOLLECTIONS and CAREER CHOICE
● Adler believed that career choices reflect a person’s personality.
● To test, Kasler & Novo (2005) gathered earliest memories from 130 participants and
were classified using Holland’s Vocational Interest Types:
○ Realistic
○ Investigative
○ Artistic
○ Social
○ Enterprising
○ Conventional
● They found that ER’s did match career type as an adult, at least for three career
types--realistic, artistic, and social.
CRITIQUE of ADLER
● Adler’s theories are also difficult to falsify nor verify. However, an alternate, causal
explanation is also possible. That is, early experiences may cause one’s present
style of life.
● THEORY RATING
○ ABILITY to GENERATE RESEARCH: above average.
○ ORGANIZED KNOWLEDGE: high.
○ GUIDES ACTION: high.
○ INTERNALLY CONSISTENT: lacks precise operational definitions
■ Individual psychology is somewhat philosophical--even moralistic--
hence, it is low on internal consistency.
○ PARSIMONIOUS: average.
● CONCEPT OF HUMANITY
○ Free choice (high)
○ Optimism (high)
○ Teleological (low in causality)
○ Unconscious (moderate)
○ Social Factors (high)
○ Uniqueness (high)
