Introduction

The AVC4000 integrates on a single PC/104-Plus card 4 real-time video

frame grabbers for capturing video from 4 independent and asynchronous
composite video sources and overlaying onto the host system VGA display
buffer or system memory.

The AVC4000 accepts NTSC or PAL composite video from any standard
source. The AVC4000 video frame grabbers use a line-locking technique to
synchronize to the incoming video, digitize and forward video data across
the high speed PC/104-Plus bus to the system display buffer or memory.

Line-locking allows the AVC4000 to quickly and accurately lock on to video

signal regardless of its source.

The AVC4000 supports CIF and QCIF frame sizes in multiple concurrent
channel capture mode and full frame (768 x 576) in single channel mode all
at full 25 or 30 fps frame rates.

AMP can provide custom configurations (subject to a minimum order quantity) for the
AVC40000. Please contact our Sales team (see A: Contacting Advanced Micro
Peripherals) to discuss your requirements.

Functional summary

Signal Sources

The AVC4000 is designed to simultaneously capture and display up to 4

separate and unrelated video sources. Each video frame grabber
channel includes a digital NTSC/PAL video decoder with an integrated 2-
input video multiplexer. Therefore each channel of the AVC4000 is able
to route in one-of-two analog video sources under software control and
therefore monitor up to 8 video sources.

Video Digitization

Composite NTSC or PAL video is input to the AVC4000 through the

header VIDEO_IN. The video is AC-coupled and fed to the on-board
decoders of the individual frame grabbers. The video decoders
automatically detect whether the incoming video signal is NTSC or PAL
and generates the correct timing output signals. Each video channel is
first decoded to chrominance and luminance signals and then digitized
by high speed analog-to-digital (A2D) converters. The A2Ds output are
passed to an internal digital video Quad Frame Store Controller (QFSC)
where scaling, filtering, interpolation and channel re-timing operations
are performed prior to data transfer to the host system VGA buffer (for
overlay applications) or memory buffer for any further processing.

Digital Video Quad Frame Store Controller (QFSC)

The Quad Frame Store Controller contains 32 Mbytes of high speed

SDRAM memory used as Frame Stores for each of the 4 digitized video
streams. The QFSC co-ordinates writing of asynchronous video streams
to the Frame Store and synchronous transfer of all 4 channels to the
system’s host VGA buffer or memory.

Real time Live Video Overlay

Digital video data stream from the 4 Frame Stores are routed across the
PC/104-Plus bus to the display buffer of the host CPU for overlaying on
the VGA Screen. The rectangular Overlay Window can be scaled,
cropped and positioned anywhere on the VGA screen. The four video
sources can be arranged within the overlay window in a number of
patterns.

Document version A.00 9
1 1: Introduction AVC4000 Hardware Reference ManualAVC4000

The digitized video stream from the AVC4000 may also be directed to a
memory buffer within the host CPU for frame grabber applications
where the information may need further processing (such as software
encoding and recording).

On Screen Display (OSD) Support

The AVC4000 hardware does support a text mode onscreen display option which
may be used to annotate each video image (with camera number for example). The
OSD functions are not currently supported in the Windows and Linux drivers,
however please contact our Sales or Support team if this is required.

Host Interface

The AVC4000 has a full 32-bit PC/104-Plus (PCI Rev 2.1) host interface
to the host computer. On board jumpers allow the AVC4000 to be
configured for any of the 4 logical PC/104-Plus stack levels of the host
computer. The jumpers plus a number of solid-state switches help to
route the appropriate PC/104-Plus control signals to the controller on
the AVC4000. Signals routed include the PCI clocks and ID-selects,
interrupts and DMA handshakes.
