Chapter 1

INTRODUCTION

The COVID-19 pandemic wreaked havoc on the world in unpredictable ways. Looking

back over the last two years and the devastating effects of the pandemic that continue up to this

day, it is clear that education is one of the most affected sectors. Students, educators, and parents

have faced numerous challenges as a result of the COVID-19 disease outbreak. Neither the

world, especially the academic institutions were prepared to adopt the rapid change to

technological platforms.

CSS students at Paliparan III Senior High School were part of all the students globally

who are, unfortunately, undergoing rapid changes as a result of the pandemic, and their current

state influences their decision to pursue college with Computer Servicing System (CSS) related

courses. The CSS courses are all about handling problems that may arise when addressing

computers. Learning the theoretical and practical knowledge of computer hardware required to

troubleshoot a wide range of hardware, software, and network system issues. This study will

further discuss the situation of unexpected adjustments in the students’ lives as well as their

insights in pursuing CSS- related courses in college despite the situation they’re in.

1.1 Background of the Study

Around the world, several countries are affected by the coronavirus disease 2019, which

is an infectious disease caused by SARS-CoV-2. As a result, governments took a variety of

precautionary measures in response to the virus outbreak. To halt the virus's spread, schools and

universities have devised a variety of methods for communicating with students via distance

learning. Herein, students who are already dealing with mental health issues have been extremely
vulnerable to the sudden changes. Numerous students faced financial challenges that jeopardized

their education, had new living arrangements that made learning difficult, and were frequently

under-resourced.

The instructional strategies were instantly transitioned to an all-E-learning environment.

E-learning is defined as a way of learning that employs Information and Communication

Technologies. However, while school closures do have a silver lining, home-learning programs

where students can still learn, the true victims of the government order are students from low-

income families and students in under-resourced schools. This puts many students in a difficult

situation in which they are unable to receive an education.

People have come a long way since they first became acquainted with technology. It

influenced how people communicate, how they learn, and, to oversimplify, how they live in

general. Even in the midst of the pandemic, technology is changing how people communicate,

learn, and live. Innovators are more important than ever, and this demand is translating into in-

demand careers, particularly in the fields of Information and Communications Technology

(ICT), where Computer Servicing System is under. Related courses include, Bachelor of Science

in Computer Science (BSCS), Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BSIT), Bachelor

of Science in Computer Engineering (BSCE), Bachelor of Science in Information Science

(BSIS), Bachelor of Science in Data Science (BSDS), Bachelor of Science in Entertainment and

Media Computing (BSEMC), and Bachelor of Science in Esports (BSE).

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Situations of the students in the midst of the Pandemic can be a factor that affect their

insights on whether they are going to pursue college. This study is all about the situation of the
Paliparan III Senior Highschool Grade 11 CSS students’ situation and insights in pursuing college

now that the pandemic is still present. Specifically, the following questions will be answered:

1) What are the situations students have been through in the midst of the pandemic?

2) What are their insights in pursuing CSS-related courses in college?

3) Given the present situation, are they willing to get a degree for college?

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The closure of schools affected not only school administrators and professors but most

especially the students. For that reason, the researchers aim to meet the objectives and

accomplish the following throughout the entire research study:

1) To be able to address grade 11 CSS students’ situations under the midst of pandemic.

2) To be able to know their insights in pursuing CSS related courses.

3) To be able to develop analytical thinking and coordination of the researchers.

1.4 Scope and Limitation of the Study

It is now clear that COVID-19 is altering student's lifestyles all over the world. This

outbreak will have an impact on the future. The challenge is determining how the students will

occur and preparing for these changes. For a student in the home-learning program, adjusting to

distance learning was difficult because they had not been prepared through simulations or

practices beforehand. Nevertheless, while school closures do have a silver lining, home-learning

programs where students can continue to learn, the true victims of the government order are

students in less fortunate situations and students in under-resourced schools.

The compilation of this research starts in January 2022. The study's scope is limited to

Paliparan III Senior High school's Grade 11 CSS students. It only focuses its study on the

respondents' situation in the midst of the pandemic and their insights on whether they will

continue pursuing courses related to Computer Servicing System for college, limiting the

researchers' ability to find information outside of its scope and study will make an easy way and

effective cost measures. By gathering all the data, it covers the consideration, acceptance,

reputation, and professionalism at all costs.

1.5 Significance of the Study

The researchers will be conducting a research study that is very productive and beneficial

to the following people:

1) Student- This study will help them to think and analyze their decision in pursuing college

despite being in the midst of a pandemic.

2) Parents- For them to gain knowledge of what students have been going through while the

pandemic is present and to give them an opportunity to support their child’s decision in

pursuing a degree in college.

3) School Administrators- This will help them determine the strengths and weaknesses of

certain programs based on the response of the graduates. It will also help to determine

what specific areas they should focus more and further enhance in order to make the

program more responsive towards preparing the students for their future professions.

4) Future Researchers- This study can serve as a background to the other thesis and future

researchers. Also, as a reliable source of evidence for future researchers who have chosen

a subject similar to this.

1.6 Operational Definition of Terms

● CSS- (Computer Servicing System) handling problems that may arise when addressing

computers. Learning the theoretical and practical knowledge of computer hardware

required to troubleshoot a wide range of hardware, software, and network system issues.

● ICT- Information and communications technology is an extensional term for information

technology that stresses the role of unified communications and the integration of

telecommunications and computers.

● Jeopardized- put (someone or something) into a situation in which there is a danger of

loss, harm, or failure.

● Distance Learning- a method of studying in which lectures are broadcast or classes are

conducted by correspondence or over the internet, without the student's needing to attend

a school or college.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

2.1 Foreign Literature

(Dhawan, 2020) The impact has been far-reaching, affecting learning

throughout the academic year and possibly even more in the coming days.

Face-to-face instruction has been phased out in a number of schools, colleges,

and universities. There is an urgent need to develop and implement new

educational and assessment strategies. The COVID-19 pandemic has

presented us with an opportunity to pave the way for the implementation of

distance learning. According to the research, certain deficiencies exist, such as

a lack of online teaching infrastructure, a lack of exposure for teachers to

online teaching, an information gap, a non- conducive environment for

learning at home, equity, and academic excellence in higher education. This

paper evaluates the global impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the teaching

and learning processes. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the challenges and

opportunities of online and continuing education are summarized, and a path

forward is suggested.

(Murgatroyd, 2020) With the availability of a plethora of platforms

and online educational tools, users, both educators and students, experience

frequent hiccups when using or referring to these tools. The following are

some of the challenges identified and highlighted by many researchers, The

most commonly identified e-learning challenges are accessibility,

affordability, flexibility, learning pedagogy, life-long learning, and

educational policy. Many countries face significant difficulties in obtaining a

reliable Internet connection and access to digital devices. While many

economically disadvantaged children in developing countries are unable to

afford online learning devices, online education exposes the learner to

increased screen time. As a result, offline activities and self-exploratory

learning have become increasingly important for students.

Another issue is a lack of parental guidance, especially for young learners,

because both parents work. There are practical issues concerning physical

workspaces that are conducive to various modes of learning.

(Cachon-Zagalaz et al. 2020) A literature regarding systematic review

about the Effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic on the Lives of School

Children happened. After concluding the systematic review, it has been

detected that there are few studies that have focused their attention on the

psychological, motor, or academic problems that can occur to minors after a

situation of these characteristics. Similarly, a small number of studies have

been found that promote actions at the family and school level to reverse this

situation when life returns to normal. These results may be useful for future

studies that seek to expand the information according to the evolution of the

pandemic.
