Chapter 9 – Solids and Fluids

Show all work in order to obtain full credit.

1. A 5.0 m long rod is stretched 0.10 m by a force. What is the strain in the rod?

2. A glass sitting on the table weighs 155 g rests on the table. The glass has an area of 0.035 m 2 in
contact with the table. What pressure does the glass exert on the table?

3. A hydraulic lift with pistons of radius 31 cm and 1.2 m is used to lift a mass of 625 kg a distance of 2.25
m above ground. What force can the smaller piston have?
4. A boat is 3.5 m wide and 5.5 m long. When a truck pulls onto it, the boat sinks 3.50 cm into the water.
What is the weight of the truck?
5. A sample of an unknown metal weighs 150 N in air and when submerged in alcohol solution with a
density of 0.70 g/cm3 has a weight of 65 N. What is the density of the unknown metal?
6. The absolute pressure below the surface of a freshwater lake is 3.51 x 10 5 Pa. At what depth does this
pressure occur? Assume atmospheric pressure is 1.01 x 10 5 Pa and the density of water is 1.00 x 10 3
kg/m3 .

7. Water flows at speed of 12.5 m/s through a pipe that has a radius of 0.35 m. The water then flows
through a smaller pipe at a speed of 40.5 m/s. What is the radius of the smaller pipe?
8. A nozzle with a radius of 0.250 cm is attached to a garden hose with a radius of 0.900 cm. The flow
rate through the hose and nozzle is 0.500 L/s. Calculate the speed of water (m/s) in the hose and nozzle.
9. How many cubic meters of blood does the heart pump in an 82-year lifetime, assuming the average
flow is 5.00 L/min?

10. The pulmonary artery, which connects the heart to the lungs, is about 8.0 cm long and has an inside
diameter of 5.0 mm. If the flow rate in it is to be 25 ml/s, what is the required pressure difference over
its length?
