Characteristics of renaissance music

 it means rebirth, rediscover and revival

 For musicians this is an era of discovering, innovation and exploration.
 This music is mostly polyphonic
 Used of word painting in text and music
 Melodic line moves in flowing manner
 Melodies are easier to perform because there moves along a scale with
a few large leaps

MASS

 Is a form of sacred musical composition that sets texts of the

Eucharistic liturgy into music (The liturgy of the Eucharist includes the
offering and the presentation of bread and wine at the altar)
 Is a polyphonic
 It can be sung acappela or with orchestral accompaniment
 Text may be syllabic(one note set to each syllable),neumatic(a few
notes set to one syllable), or melismatic (many notes to one syllable)

MAIN SECTION OF MASS

1. Kyrie(Lord have mercy)

 Is the only section of mass with Greek text
2. Gloria (Glory to God in the highest)
3. Credo (I believe in one God)
4. Sanctus and benedictus (Holy,Holy and blessed is he)
5. Agnus Dei (Lamb of God)

MADRIGAL

 A secular vocal polyphonic music composition which originated from

Italy
 It is written and expressed in a poetic text and sung during country
social gatherings
 The most important secular form during the renaissance period
 It is a polyphonic
 Sung a-cuppela
 Thoroughly composted
 Frequently in 3 to 6 voices

- He is said to be the greatest master of roman catholic church music
during the renaissance period

 THOMAS MORSLEY
- 1557-1602
- Was born in Norwich, East England
- He was a singer in the local cathedral from his boyhood
- In 1583 become master of choristers
- In his time he was the most famous composer of secular music
- FAMOUS COMPOSITION: (Fire,fire, my heart), (sing and chant it),
(fantastic),(April is in my mistress face) and (It was a Lover and his
Lass)
