WHAT'S COAL?

• Non-renewable resource

• A sedimentary rock that burns

• Used for generating electricity, industrial processes

• Such as heating homes and buildings

• Cooking and other domestic purposes

TYPES OF COAL

• Based on their carbon content,

energy value
• Peat

• Lignite Fig: Bitumnous

• Bituminous

• Anthracite coal

Fig: Types of Coal

Fig: Peat
PEAT

• Earliest stage of coal formation

• Low carbon content, Fig: A Lump of Peat

• Contains less than 40 to 55 percent carbon

• Uses; electricity generation, absorb oil and fuel spills on land & water

Fig: U.S. Geological Survey

LIGNITE
• Formed from compress peat

• Called the brown coal

• Early state of coal formation

Fig: LIGNITE Coal

• Low ranking and high volatile

• Carbon content 40-55%

• Uses; used primarily power in generation

BITUMINOUS

• Dense black sedimentary rocks

• Carbon content 40-80%

• Moisture 15-40%
Fig: Bituminous Fig: Bituminous coal (Pikeville
Formation, Middle
Pennsylvanian, Kentucky, USA)
ANTHRACITE COAL
• High carbon content and
impurities

• Best quality ;hard coal Fig: Anthracite from Bay

City, Michigan
• 80 to95 percent carbon

• Semi-metallic lustre

• Lignites slowly=less loss of heat

=highly efficient

86–97% carbon

What is Nuclear ENERGY?

• Nuclear energy is the energy that is released during a nuclear

reaction,
either by nuclear fission or nuclear fusion.
• Nuclear fission is the process in which a nucleus is split into
two smaller nuclei, releasing a large amount of energy in the form
of heat and light.
Example, Uranium
• Nuclear fusion is the process in which two atomic nuclei come
together
to form a heavier nucleus, releasing energy in the process.
• Nuclear energy has several advantages and disadvantages

** Nuclear energy, for example, results in 99.9% fewer deaths than

brown coal; 99.8% fewer than Fig: Nuclear Power Plant
coal;
WHAT IS NUCLEAR ENERGY?
• From an atomic nucleus
• Either a via a fission or fusion reaction
• A heavy nucleus (like uranium-235)is split apart into smaller
nuclei and energy is released
• Nuclear fission is the process in which a nucleus is
split into two smaller nuclei, releasing a large amount of
energy in the form of heat and light.
• Nuclear fusion is the process in which two atomic
nuclei come together
• To form a heavier nucleus, releasing energy in the process

ADVANTAGES OF NUCLEAR
ENERGY

• oldest low carbon energy

• To produce electricity and one of the
smallest carbon footprints
• Reliable and cost effective
• Nuclear fuel can produce a large amount of
energy
• Nuclear power plants need less fuel than fossil
fuel
• Spurred in technology advancement like this in
many fields, including materials science
,chemistry and physics
DISADVANTAGES OF NUCLEAR
ENERGY

RADIOACTIVE WASTE SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

TOXIC WASTE CAN BE DANGEROUS
Chemical Energy
• Form of potential energy

• Stored within the chemical bonds of molecules

Real World Sources Of Chemical Energy
• There are many sources of chemical energy.
• Found in many energy-rich molecules on earth.
• Here are a few
• Fossil fuels
• Food
• Burning Wood
• Gasoline
• Batteries
• Biomass
Food And Fossil Fuels
• Stored in the chemical bonds of molecules

• Good digestion and stimulation for our body

• Can be used physical activities and cellular processes

Batteries And Biomass
• Consist of cathode and anode
Advantages & Disadvantages Of Chemical
Energy
• High energy density
• Easily transportable
• Versatility

• Environmental impact
• Safety concerns
Disadvantages Of Chemical Energy
Solar Power
• Solar energy is radiant light and heat
from the Sun that is harnessed using
a range of technologies such as solar
power to generate electricity, solar
thermal energy, and solar
architecture.
• (Fun Fact)China Use the most Solar
Energy 392 GW. The country is the
largest producer of solar energy in
the world.
• The solar power is used by humans
as early as 7th century B.C.
Purpose of Solor
Power
• solar power can be for electricity, passive
solar design for space heating and cooling,
and solar water heating.
• Businesses and industry use solar
technologies to diversify their energy
sources, improve efficiency, and save
money.
• solar energy has an important role in
reducing greenhouse gas emissions and
mitigating climate change
Wind Energy
• Converting of wind power to electrical power

• Renewable and source of energy

How Does It Work?
• Wind blows over the blades causing them to evolve

• The kinetic energy is transformed into mechanical energy

• Electricity flows down the shafts

• Electricity can be stored or transported to grid for distribution

Advantages Of Wind Energy

• Abundant and inexhaustible resource

• No air pollution or greenhouse gas emissions

• Reduces dependence on foreign energy sources

• Cost effective & No fuel costs

• Job creation

• Extremely efficient use of the lands

Disadvantages Of Wind Energy
• Requires a lot of space and loud noise

• Windmills are huge

• Can spoil the landscape

• Can't be utilized all the time

• can kills birds migrating

What's Nuclear Energy?
• Made in power plants

• By splitting the nuclei of heavy atoms

• Such as uranium

• Nuclear Fission and Nuclear Fussion

• Nuclear fission releases a large amount of energy

Advantages Of Nuclear Energy
• One of the most low-carbon energy source

• Reliable power

• Clean source of energy: Without polluting the air

• Lower Greenhouse gas emissions

Disadvantages Of Nuclear Energy
• Impact on human life

• Radioactive waste

• High cost

• Environmental Impact
