RE: High School After School Funding Cuts

Dear Commissioners,

We are reaching out to make sure that you are aware of drastic cuts to High School Afterschool
funding. As you may know, SFUSD applied to the state for ASSET funds for all our high school
afterschool programs. Sadly, because many schools do not have accurate Free and Reduced
Lunch data for all of their students, only 2 San Francisco High Schools received funding. The
remaining schools are slated to receive backfill dollars from SFUSD, resulting in a significant
reduction in funding.

Below is a list of schools and the current and next year funding amounts:

SFUSD 22-23 Cut to

SFUSD Funding programs
Backfill
School amount 23-24
Abraham Lincoln High $79,435.00 $153,000 -$73,565.00

Balboa High $76,312.00 $170,000 -$93,688.00

Galileo Academy $77,877.00 $192,100 -$114,223.00

George Washington HS $77,877.00 $153,000 -$75,123.00

Ida B. Wells High $51,850.00 $103,700 -$51,850.00

Independence High School $19,125.00 $38,250 -$19,125.00

June Jordan School for Equity $36,603.00 $76,500 -$39,897.00

Mission High $48,284.00 $153,000 -$104,716.00

Raoul Wallenberg Traditional High $38,250.00 $76,500 -$38,250.00

$76,500
The Academy San Francisco at McAteer $54,514.00 -$21,986.00

Thurgood Marshall High $51,399.00 $148,750 -$97,351.00

$611,526.00 $1,341,300.00 -$729,774.00

Considering the attention given to what happens when youth don’t have meaningful
opportunities to engage after school - this reduction is unconscionable. These cuts effectively
gut or eliminate after school programs that provide tutoring, credit recovery, college & career
readiness, and enrichment & recreation keeping thousands of high school students engaged in
their school, resulting in lower truancy rates and higher graduation rates.
