INTRODUCTION
The United States of America (USA) is a Constitutional
RLC 2

Republic composed of 50 States and one Federal District.

Among the nations of the world it ranks third in population size
(just over 320 million inhabitants), and fourth in total land
area (approximately 3.9 million square miles). The American
people enjoy a technologically advanced society with a strong
national economy and one of the highest standards of living in
the entire world.
Over the past few decades, the United States
has become more ethnically diverse due to increased
immigration. This new expression of American society requires
that citizens embrace universal standards of tolerance,
pluralism, and equal opportunity. To celebrate this cultural
diversity, multicultural descriptions such as “African-American”,
“Latin-American”, and “Asian-American” have become very
commonplace. Through the coming lessons, get ready to

RLC 2
INTRODUCTION
The calendar-year in the United
States contains many important
holidays. Valentine’s Day, observed
on February 14th, is a time for friends
and family to express their affection
for one another. St. Patrick’s Day, on
March 17th, honors the Irish heritage
of many Americans. The 4th of July
celebrates the signing of the Declaration
of Independence, and is considered the
birthday of the American nation.
However, it is Thanksgiving
Day -more than any other holiday- that
holds a special place in the hearts of
most North Americans. The holiday can
be traced back almost 400 years, to a
time when the colonists of Plymouth,
Massachusetts celebrated a successful harvest, and with feasting and prayers, thanked God for his
abundant blessings throughout the year. In the following lessons you will learn more about the history of
this beloved American holiday.

RLC 2
Legends, fairy tales, and myths, are all fantastic,
unbelievable stories, but they have distinctive
features which make them each unique narrative
styles. For example, legends are usually based on
historic facts, involving real people and places, but which
have become exaggerated over time. Fairy tales, on
the other hand, have no historical basis, but rather
involve imaginary creatures, with magical powers, and
often represent the conflict between good and evil.
Myths are yet another narrative style, originally
used as a way to explain natural phenomena, or to
provide insight into things considered important for a
whole civilization. They commonly involve supernatural
beings, and are of a more “religious” tone. In the
following lessons we will learn how one North American
tribe explained through myth, the origin of fire.
