CL 104.02 Classical Literature
Spring 2019
Course Syllabus
Dr. Evrim Doğan Adanur

Course Hours: Mondays, 3-5pm (NBZ 11) and Thursdays 10-11 am (John Freely 332)

Course Description: This is a survey course of classical literature from the archaic period to the
later Roman era. It also provides historical and cultural context together with an emphasis on the
major genres of ancient Greek and Roman literature.

Course Organization: The course is conducted through a combination of lecture and discussion.
I assume and expect that each student keeps up with the reading and studies the assigned texts
sufficiently to be able to participate in an informed manner in class discussions. Lectures are
designed to give background information on the formal, historical, and cultural aspects of the
content. Class discussions will consist of responses to the assigned material.
Course Material: A course-pack will be provided that includes all reading material
Procedures, Instruction, and Vital Information
➔ Attendance is considered an integral aspect of the course, as is participation in class
discussions.
➔ The better you prepare for the class, the better the class works for everyone. Depending
on the assigned reading, you should spend at least three hours each week to keep up with
the reading.
➔ Informed participation will be weighed in the determination of the final grades for the
semester.
➔ Course schedule and requirements are subject to change. You are responsible for any
changes made during your absence.
➔ You will be given two quizzes on the assigned reading.
Requirements and Grade Evaluation
The grades will be distributed as follows:
Quizzes: 20% (Ten points each)
Participation 10 %
Midterm Exam: 30%
Final Exam: 40%
