LAC Session : Module 4 Lesson 2

Planning for Specialized Literacy Instruction
(A Narrative Report)

The specialized teaching of reading or reading remediation is the application of teaching strategies
designed to assist struggling readers in developing the skills, competencies, or behaviors that they need in
order to improve their performance. It is instruction undertaken to enable children experiencing reading
difficulties to catch up or develop in appropriate ways.A remediation program will be successful only if
there is careful planning, reflective teaching, and close monitoring of progress.
Rosario Elementary School K-3 Teachers conducted the 13th LAC Session on May 19, 2023, with the
topic: Planning for Specialized Literacy Instruction. It was started through a prayer led by Maám Maribel
M. Caberto and followed by the singing of the National Anthem conducted by Maám Joan C. Castillo. To
ensure that participants are present, Maám Imelda Castanon checked the attendance. After that, LAC
Facilitator Maám Joanna Marie M. Peralta started the session. She stated the objectives of the session, to
wit: 1.) Design a specialized reading instruction program for a learner based on an assessment of his/her
reading performance. She discussed how to design and implement reading remediation by following these
steps below:
Step 1: Gather important information by conducting the Phil-IRI GST and pre-test.
Step 2: Decide on the important domains that may be incorporated in a remedial session.
Step 3: Set the objectives that the child must achieve for each domain Step 4: Decide on the methods and
materials for each domain.
Step 5: Use the remedial plan to draft your lesson plan.
Step 6: Implement the lesson as planned.
Step 7: Write a reflection on how the session went and adjust succeeding lessons accordingly.
Step 8: Document and monitor the performance of the child throughout the program.
Step 9: Review progress made and adjust accordingly.
Step 10: Assess progress by conducting the Phil-IRI post-test.
LAC members actively participated in the group discussion and activities. Each grade level shared their
assignment to the group. Indeed, the LAC Session was very successful and all of us learn from it.
