Technical Notes
Average Annual Growth Rate: It is the compound annual population growth rate
Current Daily Activity Status: The activity pattern of the population, particularly in the informal sector, is such that during
a week, and sometimes, even during a day, a person could pursue more than one activity. Moreover, many people undertake
both economic and non-economic activities on the same day of a reference week. The current daily activity status for a
person was determined on the basis of his/her activity status on each day of the reference week using a priority-cum-major
time criterion (day to day labour time disposition).
Current Weekly Activity Status: The current weekly activity status of a person is obtained during a reference period of
7 days preceding the date of enumeration. A person was considered working (or employed) if he/she, while pursuing any
economic activity, had worked for at least one hour on at least one day during the 7 days preceding the date of enumeration.
Dwelling Unit: Dwelling unit is the existing house accommodation available to the household for residential purposes.
Households with Access to Bathroom: In this survey, a bathing place which satisfies the criteria of a room is considered as a
‘bathroom’. An enclosed area without a roof used for bathing purposes or any living room/ kitchen used for bathing purpose
will not be considered as a bathroom.
Households with Drainage Facility: Households having either closed or open drainage connectivity for waste water outlet
Infant Mortality Rate: Number of infant deaths (<1 year) during the year per thousand live birth during that year, or (Number
of infant deaths during the year/ Number of live births during the year)*1000.
Labour Force: Persons who are either ‘working’ (or employed) or ‘seeking or available for work’ (or unemployed)
Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR):- LFPR is defined as the percentage of persons in the labour force in the population.
LFPR- ((Number of employed persons + Number of unemployed persons)/Total population)*100
Latrines by Types:
Pit Latrine: These latrines are attached to a pit that is dug into the ground for receiving human excreta.
Water Closet Latrine: Sanitary water flush latrines are those that have water closets fitted with flushing cistern. Such
latrines may be connected to a septic tank or an underground sewerage system. Human excreta from these types of
latrines is removed without the need for scavenging.
Other Latrine: This category includes service latrines, latrines serviced by animals such as pigs, etc. and all latrines other
than the pit and the water closet types of latrine. Service latrines are dry type of latrines from where human excreta is
removed by scavengers.
Level of Urbanization: It is the percentage of urban population to total population in a reference year.
Literacy Rate: Percentage of literates to the total population aged 7 years and above. As per Census of India, a person aged
seven and above who can both read and write with understanding in any language, is treated as literate.
Natural Growth Rate (Population): The difference between Crude Birth Rate and Crude Death Rate
Net Migration Rate: Net migration rate is defined as the in-migration rate minus out-migration rate. Migration in this context
refers to only international migration.
Principal Source of Drinking Water: Information in respect to the household’s principal source of drinking water will be
collected in this item. The principal source of drinking water refers to the source from which most of the drinking water for
the household was obtained during the last 365 days.
Population Growth Rate: Population growth rate can be defined as average annual exponential growth rate of population.
Room: A constructed area with walls or partitions on all sides with at least one door way and a roof overhead.
Living Room: A room with floor area (carpet area) of at least 4 square metres (i.e., approximately 43 square feet), a height of
at least 2 metres (i.e., approximately 6.6 feet) from the floor to the highest point in the ceiling and used for living purposes will
be considered as a living room. Thus, rooms used as bedroom, sitting room, prayer room, dining room, servant’s room - all are
considered as living rooms provided they satisfy the size criterion.
Other Room: It is a room which does not satisfy the specification of 4 square metres floor area and 2 metres height from the
floor to the highest point of the ceiling, or a room which, though it satisfies the specification, is not used for living purposes.
Statutory Towns: It is the urban area with a municipality, corporation, cantonment board or notified town area committee.
Katcha Structure: Katcha structure is one, which has walls and roofs made of non-pucca materials.
Pucca Structure: Pucca Structure is one whose walls and roof are made of pucca materials.
Semi-Pucca Structure: It is one in which either the walls or the roof (but not both) are made of pucca material. Walls/roof
made partially of pucca material are regarded as Katcha walls/roof.
Tenure Status: A dwelling unit is the accommodation used by the household for its residential purpose. The tenure status of
the dwelling unit indicating the type of possession of the household on the dwelling unit gets recorded in this item in terms of
the following catogaries:
Owned: A dwelling unit is considered to be ‘owned’ by the sample household if permanent heritable possession with or
without the right to transfer the title is vested in a member or members of the household.
Hired (Including Employer’s Quarter): If the dwelling unit in which the sample household lives is provided to a member of
the sample household by his/her employer, the dwelling unit will be considered as ‘employer quarter’. If the dwelling unit is
taken on rent, by the sample household, which is payable at monthly, quarterly or any other periodic intervals or on lease, for
a period of less than 30 years, it will be treated as a hired dwelling unit.
Houseless: Households living more or less regularly under staircases, in tents, in pipes, under bridges, or purely temporary
flimsy improvisations built by the roadside (which are liable to be removed at any moment) are considered to have no dwelling.
Unemployment Rate (UR): UR is defined as the percentage of persons unemployed among the persons in the labour force.
UR- (No of unemployed persons/Number of employed persons plus number of unemployed persons)*100
A. All places with a municipality, corporation, cantonment board or notified town area committee, etc.
B. All other places which satisfy the following criteria:
i. A minimum population of 5,000,
ii. At least 75% of male working population engaged in non-agricultural pursuits, and
iii. A density of population of at least 400 persons per square kilometre.
Usual Activity Status: According to the usual status, workers are those who perform some work activity either in the principal
status or in the subsidiary status. The two categories of usual activity status are as under:
Usual Principal Activity Status: The usual activity status relates to the activity status of a person during the reference
period of 365 days preceding the date of enumeration. The activity status on which a person spent relatively longer time
(i.e. major time criterion) during the 365 days preceding the date of enumeration is considered as the usual principal
activity status of the person.
Usual Subsidiary Activity Status: A person whose usual principal status was determined on the basis of the major time
criterion could have pursued some economic activity for a shorter time throughout the reference year of 365 days
preceding the date of enumeration or for a minor period, which is not less than 30 days, during the reference year. The
status in which such economic activity pursued was the subsidiary economic activity status of that person.
Work: Work is defined as participation in any economically productive activity. Such participation may be physical or mental
in nature. Work involves not only actual work but also effective supervision and direction of work. It also includes unpaid
work on farms and enterprises.
Worker Population Ratio (WPR): WPR defined as the percentage of employed persons in the population.
WPR- (Number of employed persons/ Total population)*100
