Glaciers

*Advice from a Glacier*

Carve your own path, Go slow, Channel your strengths, Keep moving forward, Avoid meltdowns
and be Cool !

A. What is Glacier ?
 Glaciers are defined as a
moving river of ice but not all
masses of ice are called
glaciers.
 To qualify to be a glacier, ice
must be at least six
hundredths of a square mile
in size (0.06mi2) and 164 feet
thick.

B. How do glaciers form ?

 Glacier form in a place where snow accumulates for a long period of time.
 As the snow gets deeper, the resulting weight and pressure turns the bottom layer of
the snow into ice.
 This high pressure combined with the force of gravity causes the glacier to move.
 Although most glaciers move very slowly, some glaciers move as fast as 100 feet per
day.

C. How glaciers do shapes the landscape of the earth’s surface ?

 Glaciers exist in every continent and it plays a major role in
shaping the landscape or the surface of the earth through
erosion.
 Water from the bottom layer of the glacier seeps to the cracks
of the earth’s surface where it freezes and expands loosening the rocks and boulders on
the surface of the earth.
 These rocks are dragged along the glacier’s path
and the earth
beneath the
glacier become
smooth.
 The smaller rocks
and debris
become frozen at
the bottom of the
glacier’s lower layer and act as sandpaper.

D. Importance of Glaciers
 It shapes the landscape of the earth.
 Glacier carves lakes and valleys from natural dams and river beds.
 The water that melts from the ice is the largest source of water in the planet.
