Dear Reader,
We are writing to you with an important update regarding BIS certification for Steel product manufacturers and importers.

Background The Ministry of Steel on June 2, 2023, notified an invitation of Comments from all the stakeholders on
the draft Steel and Steel Products (Quality Control) Order, 2023. The relevant order is available here.

The Ministry of Steel has also issued an Annual Report enlisting a consolidated list of Exemptions
granted by the Empowered Committee during FY 2022-23. The relevant order is available here.

Products concerned The draft Quality Control Order concerns the following products:
Indian Standard Number Product Description
IS 16732: 2019 Galvanized Structural Steel - Specification
IS 17111: 2010 (ISO 683- 17: 2014) Heat-Treated Steels Alloy and Free-Cutting
Steels — Ball and Roller Bearing Steels
IS 12594: 1988 Hot-dip Zinc Coating on Structural Steel Bars for
Concrete Reinforcement
IS 1170: 1992 Ferrochromium – Specification
IS 1171: 2011 Ferromanganese – Specification
IS 1470: 2013 Silicomanganese - Specification

Next Steps The concerned stakeholders, both domestic and foreign producers, importers and users of the product
have an opportunity to provide their feedback on the draft quality control order before the
enforcement. The Ministry of Steel can be contacted to providing the stakeholder inputs.
Separately, the Annual report can be checked to examine the approved exemption requests during the
period of 01.04.2022 - 31.03.2023
